AIBU To Point Out Opinions You Don’t See Outside Of Mumsnet …?

So I have noticed that according to (a lot of posters on) Mumsnet:

-Transphobia is perfectly acceptable.
-Ageism is the worst/most prevalent type of discrimination going on in the uk today.
-Cheating in a relationship is tantamount to murder.
-Enrolling your children in boarding school means you don’t love them.
-Teaching is always a miserable profession, with no exceptions.

What else have you noticed is a very common MN opinion but not one you hear in real life?

I’m not trying to start an argument on the truth of any of these statements, just curious what others have noticed.

Yes so do I and when my children were young we never left them alone while on holiday.

So you always shared bedrooms? until what age?

Differentforgirls · 29/07/2026 13:58

Fluffyscrubberdo · 29/07/2026 13:47

Good for you.

I agree. We were on holiday years ago when my oldest was 3 and I was pregnant with my youngest. Got chatting to a couple at the pool who asked why I wasn’t at this club thing at night and I said I had the wean. They said they just left theirs in the apartment and took the baby monitor out. This was me 😱. They then asked what we both did for a living. Me - education. Husband - social work.

They were never at the pool again when we were.

Guilt.

chemmie · 29/07/2026 13:59

How do you know it was guilt?!

What?

Are you saying that being in the next bedroom is the same as leaving them in a strange place alone?

Because they couldn’t wait to get away from us when they heard what we did for a living.

chemmie · 29/07/2026 14:04

@Differentforgirlshence why I asked for clarification? Does never leaving your dc alone mean sleeping in the same bedroom? Hotel rooms, villas etc would be strange places as it’s not your normal abode.

chemmie · 29/07/2026 14:04

@DifferentforgirlsI work in education & people have never avoided me on holiday 🤷🏻‍♀️

Where? Look, I’m judging you and you’re judging me. I don’t care that you’re judging me. You obviously care that I’m judging you.

I suggest getting over it as I won’t stop thinking that taking a wean on holiday then going out and leaving them is weird (at the very least) parenting.

Keep asking questions though to make you feel better.

I won’t be answering you anymore. You know what I think. That won’t change.

Again, you are thinking of a very, very different set up with the constant mention of on holiday, pool and mini disco.

No one is talking about some huge fuck off resort abroad with multiple buildings. You’re completely misunderstanding the situation and yet going on and on.

I haven’t mentioned mini discos or big “fuck off” resorts as I have never been to these things. Guess you have. 🤔

What’s the ‘club thing’ at night you mention?

You realise people are talking about putting their baby down to sleep upstairs, then going to have dinner downstairs for a couple of hours while watching their child on a video baby monitor.

They’re not off roaming around a resort or town all evening boozing.

You haven’t told us what you did with your child in these hotels, given you never left them alone, but also didn’t sit in the room in the evening..?

Pull the other one, OP. You've framed all of these in the most hyperbolic way possible, just to be goady. Don't be surprised if people think you're full of it

chemmie · 29/07/2026 14:16

Yes, you definitely sound like someone who doesn’t care about me judging them! 😆. I haven’t used a listening service myself but know plenty who do & don’t judge them or consider myself a better parent

And as I said I have let my dc use the hotel child focused activities as opposed to never leaving them alone.

It was an adult karaoke thing.

We took them with us.

To an adult club? Bet you were popular.

Some people do want adult time on holiday you know

Not to an adult club no. Out for dinner etc. We didn’t go to “adult clubs” on family holidays as we weren’t teenagers.

Why go on a family holiday to get “adult time”? You can do that at home.

Are you serious? I hope this is a wind up. I don't know anyone that would do something like that. I would report to SS immediately.

I appeciate people are rightly very cautious after Madeline McCann, but leaving your young children 100s of metres away in a different location with no monitor is VERY different to leaving them upstairs in a room you can access in under a minute with a monitor that where you cam both hear and see them…. It’a barely different to having your child upstairs whilst you eat downstairs.

And even if you’re uncomfortable doing that, it’s absurd to think that this is a Social Services matter!

AutumnHazel · 29/07/2026 14:41

Differentforgirls · 29/07/2026 13:59

What?

Are you saying that being in the next bedroom is the same as leaving them in a strange place alone?

If you’re literally downstairs and less than a minute away if needed, and can hear/see them on a monitor, and talk to them if necessary, I don’t see the issue.

The risk actually feels a lot less than if they are sleeping in a separate room whilst you’re asleep, and potentially completely unaware of a stealthy intruder.

I feels like some people have taken the MM incident, and extrapolated and catastrophised to extremes!

MidnightPatrol · 29/07/2026 14:43

Differentforgirls · 29/07/2026 14:22

Some people would be judgey about that and say it’s terrible to drag a baby around all evening with you so that you can eat and drink late at night in a restaurant, when they should be asleep in their bed.

And - not all babies will willingly do this, and need dark and quiet to sleep.

Not if your family are with you at home, as they will be almost all of the time if you have young children.

SummerofGrief · 29/07/2026 14:45

MidnightPatrol · 29/07/2026 12:18

Why should it be criminal?

I live in the UK

Madeleine McCanns parents did not have a baby monitor, could not see or hear their children, and were several hundred metres away in a different building, and had left windows to the street open.

This is notably different in terms of safety to being in the same building, with a baby monitor, being able to visually see the child etc etc

Maybe the disconnect is that you can afford very posh hotels which offer baby monitors? Even then it seems an outdated thing to do.

We tend to book air b and b's so dc can have a bedroom to themselves and we can have the living room after they've gone to bed, instead of having to put them down and then just sit there in a Premier Inn or something. I would not leave them.

Well we managed it! They’re not awake 24/7.
