90s film recommendation for 16yr old

Over the last few weeks DD16 and I have watched a film or a series together a few times a night.

I'm not a big TV person (we wouldn't have one at all if it was up to me) but this has been lovely. She normally just hisses at me or asks for money so I'm enjoying this before normal behaviour resumes. 🤣

What films/series would you recommend?
She is quite eclectic and I dont care but some 90s films would be good to relive my youth.

She likes:
Fallout series
Schitts Creek
Heartbreakers
Pitch Perfect
Fallout Guy
Sliding Doors (this was left field but she really loved it!)

She didn't like
Warm Bodies
Shakespeare In Love
Top Gun
Dirty Dancing

I'm trying to get her to watch The Last of Us and Stranger Things but she's refusing on principle because we wouldn't let her watch them when they first came out.

The Breakfast Club
The Lost Boys
If she likes Fallout might she like Alien?
Back to the Future
Teenwolf

Showed my teenage nephew Cool Runnings the other day and he loved it.

I rewatched XFiles pilot a few months ago. It was soooo boring! 🤣 I didnt even make it half way through. I loved X Files growing up.

Buffy, I've never watched that but good call.

Yeah I’ve been surprised when rewatching stuff - some series stand the test of time and others really do not.

my kids loved buffy.

Enjoy! My teenager likes Japanese manga and I’ve tried but I just can’t get into it.

if I had a daughter I’d break out my favs from when I was a teen, pretty in pink (80s classic), bring it on, she’s all that, never been kissed, gosford park and my current favs as an adult that I’d let my teen watch would be the blacklist, swat, the rookie, fbi and prison break (clearly a theme 🤣) He has sat and watched downtown Abby with me. I turn off criminal minds even though he’s nearly 15 as it’s just a bit too much in my opinion for him.

There's a free streaming service called Tubi, its got an amazing selection of vintage films, from Buster Keaton to Art House. Also, their horror collection is unrivaled. Yesterday I watched a film with killing babies.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 28/07/2026 09:04

Muriel's Wedding?

Iocanepowder · 28/07/2026 09:05

Silence of the Lambs. Also a good book.

Wipeywipey · 28/07/2026 09:06

Film-wise I think I was a bit obsessed with Dogma at that age (I had it on VHS no less!).

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 28/07/2026 09:13

Cruel Intentions (90s remake of dangerous liaisons)
Pleasantville
But I'm a Cheerleader
Romeo+Juliet (Baz Lurhman)
Heavenly Creatures
Scent of a Woman
Truly, Madly, Deeply
Dead Again
Strictly Ballroom (maybe not as similar plot to Dirty Dancing but a lot better)
Priscilla Queen of the Desert

jeaux90 · 28/07/2026 09:16

Ferris Bueller

Rewatched buffy with my two sons, they were very bored, laughed at the special effects- said it to a girl in work in her 20s and she said ‘oh god mum tried to make me watch that crap too, we lasted two episodes’🙈

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/07/2026 09:23

Mrs Doubtfire
The Full Monty
Big Fat Greek Wedding (although it’s from 2002)

Crojo · 28/07/2026 09:34

I never watched it but I remember Dawsons Creek being popular at my school in the 90’s

LondonKara · 28/07/2026 09:38

Sorry but that made me laugh

I would suggest:
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Four Weddings and a Funeral
The Truth About Cats and Dogs

Second this. My DD loved Gilmore Girls and has rewatched it again now in her early 20s.
