90s film recommendation for 16yr old

Over the last few weeks DD16 and I have watched a film or a series together a few times a night.

I'm not a big TV person (we wouldn't have one at all if it was up to me) but this has been lovely. She normally just hisses at me or asks for money so I'm enjoying this before normal behaviour resumes. 🤣

What films/series would you recommend?
She is quite eclectic and I dont care but some 90s films would be good to relive my youth.

She likes:
Fallout series
Schitts Creek
Heartbreakers
Pitch Perfect
Fallout Guy
Sliding Doors (this was left field but she really loved it!)

She didn't like
Warm Bodies
Shakespeare In Love
Top Gun
Dirty Dancing

I'm trying to get her to watch The Last of Us and Stranger Things but she's refusing on principle because we wouldn't let her watch them when they first came out.

Aliens because Ripley is an amazing role model for young women.
Before Sunrise and Before Sunset which are both charming!
Pride because it’s a good bit of social history.
It’d be interesting to hear what your daughter makes of the Breakfast Club though as some of it hasn’t aged well!

Apologies, I know these aren’t all 90s films (if any of them are!).

Citadelica · 28/07/2026 14:22

Romeo + Juliet - very much a timeless classic

The Ring scares the shit out of me! Especially when I had a tv in my bedroom as a teenager.

I was once on a residential stress course, one afternoon we were tasked with “doing something different” and to report back the next day

Two of us opted for the cinema, and didn’t know what was on.

The next day was described the experience of watching the ring in a fairly empty cinema

Cruel Intentions (90s remake of dangerous liaisons)
Pleasantville
But I'm a Cheerleader
Romeo+Juliet (Baz Lurhman)
Heavenly Creatures
Scent of a Woman
Truly, Madly, Deeply
Dead Again
Strictly Ballroom (maybe not as similar plot to Dirty Dancing but a lot better)
Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Oooh I forgot about Pleasantville! That's such a good film! Off to Google if it's available to stream anywhere...
