To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

NotTonightDeidre · 23/07/2026 19:07

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

What do 15 year old girls do on camping trips with the family?

We had tents with separate "rooms" for sleeping.

Camping trips by definition also mean you can go outdoors just by opening the flap, so you have the whole space of the campsite available to you.

The bathroom is also away from the tent, so you don't have to worry about the rest of the family being hyper aware of how long you are spending in there and what you are doing (whether it's because you are dealing with menstrual blood, or just want to spend ages having a long shower and putting on your makeup). I'm not saying that families do care about how long a teen spends in the bathroom and what they are doing to be clear - just that it's something a teen could easily worry about.

No it's not maybe DD has her period and doesn't want to be in a room with male.

What would having your period change? Nobody changes their pad etc in their bedroom they do it in the loo. You’re not waltzing around free bleeding so why would it make a difference?

MyDarlingRose · 24/07/2026 09:17

If as a PP says he snores then she’s absolutely valid to want her own room 😂

Didn’t stay in a hotel. Nice try tho. 😁

of course you didn't 😉

Nice story tho

She’s 15. Do you think they’re going be happy to leave her at home by herself for a week if she doesn’t fancy the trip?

I don’t think ‘we’re paying so you have to have put up with it’ should really apply to teenage girls’ privacy boundaries, really.

Whyever not Send her to stay with friend or relative or have one stay with her.

How would you know where that poster stayed?? Most young travels stated in youth hostels anyway.

I don't care enough to try to turn the thread towards that particular poster just because they made a laughable comment😂it's completely irrelevant to the OP anyway

I don't actually see what is laughable about it. Travelling at 17 was perfectly normal for me y people before everyone started infantilism of the teens

SingleSexMattersInCharity · 24/07/2026 09:36

This year is the first we’ve had to get 2 x premier inn rooms. DS is 19 and DD is 16. Rules about number of people of certain ages in a room partly. Partly due to size of DS. We chose to have a girls room and a boys room. DDs preference.

On holiday we managed to have a single room self catering deal. The living/dining/kitchen area had beds. So again we had a boys room and a girls room.

I think it depends on the whole set up of the options you are looking at and if you can manage privacy in other ways, by eg having a girls space and a boys space.

We couldn’t afford to have a holiday if we had to get 2 rooms.

But surely taking time in the bathroom is no different to at home? Not everyone has two toilets.

Tabarnak · 24/07/2026 09:45

I haven’t voted because the poll doesn’t align with your OP.

If she feels uncomfortable then she feels uncomfortable. Find accommodation that gives her some privacy.

How old is Dd2?

I stayed in a studio apartment belonging to some friends of my parents.

Being in a bathroom knowing that the rest of your family are literally sat just outside is a bit different (if you are self conscious like many teens are) to using the bathroom at home where people would be in different rooms in different parts of the house and not sat outside the door.

Homes may not have multiple toilets but they do have a kitchen sink which can be used as a source of water to reduce pressure on the bathroom for basic washing/toothbrushing etc activities.

Routines on holiday are also usually different to home.

ThatRubyPeer · 24/07/2026 09:57

If her dad isn't going to respect her request for privacy then it's going to condition her to think her own needs (in this repsect) aren't as important. I would seriously think about that... 15 year old me would have never have shared a room with my Dad on holiday, nor would he have expected me to, that is seriously weird, sorry.

Aluna · 24/07/2026 09:58

Moonnstarz · 24/07/2026 06:58

I think more information is needed as to why she doesn't want to share.

As some have suggested is she worried about her dad seeing her? (Is he her actual dad or is it stepdad and is there something creepy going on?)

Though those saying she doesn't want him to see her maybe be ignoring the fact if it's a beach holiday she is potentially going to be parading around the poolside in a tiny bikini based on some girls I have seen, in which case dad plus everyone else will see her in a state of undress then, so what's different to sharing a room and getting ready in the bathroom?

The what if she is on her period is just ridiculous. Should girls avoid their dads when they are due on? How does this then work for girls that live with their dads full time? Utter nonsense and shows the stupidity that still exists around a normal body function.

It’s extraordinary how little awareness some women have of other women’s period issues.

And can’t figure out the difference between sharing a bathroom with their dad (which actually many girls don’t) and sharing a bathroom and a bedroom.

Bellie710 · 24/07/2026 10:12

Me, DH and DD15 are going on holiday this year, her sisters are older and not coming we always booked them and us a room this year will be exactly the same she will have a room to herself. I think if she was sharing with her Dad she wouldn't come with us.

but it's HER DAD?

When mum is not home, who is dealing with his daughter's period and helping the way the mum would?

The OP has conveniently refused to give more details about the "holiday", and most people agree that it's pretty grim to share with a 2 year old and your parents.

many girls don/t? and with their brothers?
Come on Princess, how many girls do have their own private bathroom, gives us a break.

It's extraordinary how some people push the idea that girls are not pure or should hide when they have their periods, should be embarrassed and should avoid the mere presence of a male, who happens to be their own FATHER.

First teens don’t need “help” from a parent with periods but they do need privacy.

Who said anything about a private bathroom? Kids generally use the family bathroom but the parents may have their own. She doesn’t have a brother.

As for the last para - it’s so batshit as to not merit engagement.

waterrat · 24/07/2026 10:46

the questino is - how enjoyable a holiday will you all have sharing a room and is there another option?

We have to share rooms but I tend to share with youngest and dad with oldest (youngest is autistic so wo'nt share well with sibling) -

I think holidays are meant to be fun?! I would do whatever I could to avoid whole family sharing.

you are the one making no sense

As long as the bathroom is private, they have the same privacy on holiday as they have at home.

In normal families, teens are not left to buy their own period products and make their own way to the doctor to deal with period pains 😂

Aluna · 24/07/2026 11:02

@thatgreenjuniper Of course they don’t they have to walk out of the bathroom straight into an area where everyone is sitting or lying in bed. With or without bloody knickers in their hand. Bathrooms in homes don’t generally open onto the sitting room.

You’re labelling the standard purchase of sanpro in the weekly shop as “help” are you? You’re not likely to go to the GP about period pains on holiday. Do you actually have kids?

DD doesn’t even tell me anymore when she comes on , much less her dad. Only help she needs is “i need more pads/painkillers”. Yes there were more questions, some support given for the first ones , but now she’s pretty much self sufficient.

As for your second paragraph it’s not about pure and clean. WTF? It’s about allowing girls to feel however they want to feel about it and them having the privacy they want/need. Some might need more, some less. Neither is wrong.

you can keep twisting everything I say to fit your little narrative if you want 😂

You seem to find periods very embarrassing, maybe you should work on that? They really are not. If you ever have kids, don't raise them believing it's shameful and to keep secret from MEN. It's quite sad nowadays to be that backward.
