To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

NotTonightDeidre · 23/07/2026 19:07

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

We’re a family of 3. Have a teen dd. I would always try to get a one bed apartment but sometimes only a single room is available. Dd15 has no issue sharing a sleeping place (own bed obviously) with me and her dad. We do it several times a year.

pasturesgreen · 24/07/2026 11:58

I'm in my 40s and still happily share a hotel room with my Dad if the occasion presents itself. It's not like we're parading around naked anyway, and most of the time it makes no sense to fork out for two rooms when we're only going to use it for sleeping anyway.
Unless there's some massive backstory, I'm with your DH here. You get to dictate room arrangements when you're paying. Otherwise you can suck it up.

BringBackCatsEyes · 24/07/2026 12:04

I went on holiday with my 2 sons, my sister and her 3 girls (late primary, early teens). The girls really did not use the bedroom just for sleeping.....they were on their 4th outfit before we'd even left for the beach in the morning!
Bedrooms would also be used for some quiet time away from everyone else after a hot day out.
I seem to be an outlier, but I think it's absolutely normal to want your own space. I am by no means affluent - don't tend to do resort/hotel holidays, but airbnbs or holiday lets.

I agree with this- in only child families (which I was), I think this is pretty standard- I always shared a room with my parents, do people really book a separate room for one teenager?!

LBFseBrom · 24/07/2026 12:44

No way would I have shared a bedroom with parents on holiday.

No idea why my perfectly innocuous post was deleted. Certainly didn’t break any talk guidelines.

Probably for “troll hunting”.

What would having your period change? Nobody changes their pad etc in their bedroom they do it in the loo. You’re not waltzing around free bleeding so why would it make a difference?

It definitely does make a difference, think about it, it's not about changing pads.

A fifteen year old is not a child, she needs her own space on holiday period or not.

All bunking in together is for young kids.

I didn't share with my parents once past the being little stage and would have refused had it been suggested when I was a teenager.

but the OP has never come back to explain what exactly she was talking about.

As said many times here, the type of holiday and details make a big difference.

I wouldn't even spend an actual holiday in one room with my 2 yo! 😂
It's a holiday, not prison. Only a night or 2 would be different.

Period or not, being in the same room as your dad shouldn't be an actual issue.

Hamiltonfan · 24/07/2026 14:41

My 20 and 17 year olds are sharing a room with us right now. We just take it in turn to use the bathroom and are respectful to each other.

Aluna · 24/07/2026 14:58

MN what on earth is going on? Another perfectly innocuous post.

Not all people are the same. Funny that.

There are a lot of them these days. I tend to wait and see if OP comes back before commenting further.

Of course she doesn’t want to share a room. DH is being ridiculous.

Yes they do. I was an only child, used to my own room, would not have relaxed sharing with parents and they needed some privacy too. I shared with them when I was very little,

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 24/07/2026 15:52

My DD is also 15 if it’s just a couple of nights in a family room in say a Premier Inn she’ll share with me her Dad and her brother as we’re just using it as a base and we all get changed in the bathroom.
If we’re away for longer we usually get two rooms now and me and her share and my DH and DS share.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 24/07/2026 16:19

I love my dad, have always loved my dad, he has always been my right hand man - but at 15 I would not have wanted to share a room with him. The ages of 13-17 were particularly awkward and difficult for me body wise - and I still remember it vividly. Please try and accommodate for your daughter.

So you would've paid for an extra room yourself?

OhBettyCalmDown · 24/07/2026 16:51

Some of these posts leave me a bit baffled. I’m curious at what age a child is entitled to express an opinion? All of this ‘if I’m paying I make the final decision’ is a bit lost on me. Do you really never have a discussion with your children or make decisions as a family? At what point are they deemed important enough to have a say…do they have to reach a certain arbitrary age? Start earning their own money? Move out?

Is it any wonder why so many women give up careers when they have children and then end up trapped in relationships with little freedom if they’ve spent their formative years being told if you don’t contribute financially your not important enough to get a say.

I suppose that’s how we end up with so many “ungrateful/miserable teens” on holiday or otherwise threads. They dared to have an opinion, preference, feelings.

Oh there are choices. If a teen doesn't want to share a room they can forgo the holiday and stay with friends/ family or at home if a bit older. Nice to know you may all have a spare £1k plus to get another room

Everyone is free to have an opinion, but hey are not free to tell others what they have to do or spend their money on

I don’t have a spare 1k actually we just generally book something that suits. We’ve no idea what kind of holiday or accommodation is being booked but if one of my family members was dead set against it I’d at least listen and consider other options. I just can’t imagine being so set on a destination or accommodation that I’d tell my child to stay home before I explored other options

villadicance · 24/07/2026 17:11

I definitely understand just wanting the space. I wanted that too as a child and usually we booked self catering anyway so that was fine.

But the fixation on not wanting to share with her dad specifically is a bit weird to me personally.

I don't really understand all the stuff about periods either - surely no one is changing a tampon in front of their mum/sister either, what's the difference here?
