Rude text? Or a valid ‘joke’

Melmel2 · 23/07/2026 12:29

My boyfriend stayed over last night, I was clear with him I had a very early WFH meeting and would need him to be gone by 9. He was, but text me mid morning to say ‘bit gutted I had to leave, I was expecting cornflakes and a quick wank’

I told him I was clear I started work at 9 and needed the flat clear so no interruptions.

He replied saying ‘haha obviously joking, it’s a famous film line’. I’ve never heard of it and he hasn’t replied to tell me which one it’s from.

Would anyone else find that rude?

This what was said
‘bit gutted I had to leave, I was expecting cornflakes and a quick wank’
it didn't say who was doing the wanking.
I can't see he would want to do that just after he's eaten a bowl of cornflakes !

Oh yes, one must wait an hour after cornflakes before having a wank.

Honestly, anyone who can’t cope with a little crude joke is ridiculous. All the women saying it’s a red flag or reading more into it needs to relax. If it’s not your kind of humour, fine, but that’s it surely. Is there any need to cry about it?

It’s just a joke! Come on!

Who's crying ?!

He just sounds ville anyway. You're only there for sex for him. If thats ok with you then great, but he has no harm nor originality and definitely not funny

You may not find the joke funny but you don’t have to take if literally, i I think it’s a bit much to interpret it as him only being interested in sex from OP. The only issue here is that OP and her boyfriend don’t share the same sense of humour.

That's fair enough if crude and juvenile is your penchant. It's the number of pp who think people who have different standards of humour and conversation are " dour" that annoy me.

Yes everybody is different so I agree with you OP would be better finding someone who isn't as crude and juvenile as this man.

Slightly hypocritical for you to say you find it annoying that people call others who don't share the same sense of humour 'dour', when you immediately go on to call his sense of humour 'juvenile', is it not?

I personally don't find things like toilet humour funny at all (I know pp's have likened OPs example to toilet humour) but given this is a quote from a film, I think I might have found it slightly amusing if I had understood the reference.

WhisperingHi · 24/07/2026 01:23

Quote or no quote, it’s obviously a joke. Lighten up.

If it's "so obvious" why so many conflicting opinions ?

Because lots of mumsnetters take everything literally and seriously. Especially on AIBU.

Why would someone say they thought they’d get cornflakes and a wank?! Cornflakes?!

He was being silly, he’s let her know that. OP needs to chill.

He had to leave early, agreed to and did without fuss but it reminded him of a funny line from a film so he sent it as a joke. It went over your head but it’s a bloody joke, he rover yourself.

My partner had a sore hip once, but we were still being intimate. And once after sex, he had been a bit sore and I said, “you were like a captain solemnly going down with his ship.” Luckily, he knew the quote and laughed loudly. It was funny. But that’s how we are - inappropriate comments and quotes to make light of things.

It was a joke. Calm down.

Hilarious! Big fan of the Peep Show here. This thread is quite alarming to me, people devoid of humour depress me greatly.

He has now told me it’s a Danny Dyer quote, and I can’t say it makes me feel any better about it. Crude and disrespectful.

You need to split up with him immediately. You clearly have zero sense of humour and I feel sorry for him. Kicking him out as well just because you have a teams meeting. You sound insufferable

Not to mention the "very early" teams meeting.
9am 😂

It's not necessarily the start time for work; the OP might have meant an 'early' meeting in the sense that it'd likely be the first meeting/formal 'thing' involving other colleagues of the day, and that she needed to get up and showered/dressed, and get things together in preparation for the meeting.

Sunflower1650 · 24/07/2026 10:16

You sound like you’d be great fun at a party.

AlwaysExtraHot · 24/07/2026 11:25

I've been to plenty of marvellous parties (to coin a phrase) where this sort of 'humour' wasn't needed for all involved to have a hilarious and excellent time.

LivingMyBestAnxietyLife · 24/07/2026 13:09

Oh god the amount of people with a stick up their arse these days! God it was a joke..so many uptight women on here. Leave him if you find him uncouthed. Poor sod

Foggydaze · 24/07/2026 13:40

He was probably being playful for him.

But you had certainly laid down your stipulations.

lebin · 24/07/2026 17:20

This isn’t my sense of humour & I haven’t seen football factory so wouldn’t have known. Once he told me it was a film line I would have googled it and laughed it off.

Katrin74 · 25/07/2026 07:04

he’s your boyfriend yet i would imagine I’d only make a post about this & how to deal with it if it was something said by a man I was not romantically involved with. He just sounds funny imho, but your humour may be mismatched. Maybe inappropriate very early on in relationship but I’d say if he’s stayed over at yours that horse has already bolted

ToKittyornottoKitty · 23/07/2026 12:52

No not ‘because a man’… because someone made a joke. Males and females make jokes, even if you don’t get the reference you don’t need to be offended because a man did it

Yes because learning to laugh about things makes your life better

WelshMusicMum · 26/07/2026 19:46

Yeurgh! Quote or not, I have never had a relationship with anyone who'd write this in a text. I understand some might find it funny, I'd tell him get on with it himself and then find someone slightly less crude 👍

Sweetdreamsbeautifulnightmare · 26/07/2026 19:50

It’s funny. You’re uptight or don’t like him enough and easily have the ick
