Tea

To find tea drinkers exhausting? 🍵
I might have the very odd cup in the rare event of a hangover. Dh would only have one if a guest is present. When we have tea - drinking guests they will drink about 3 cups in a row , five times per day. I've started telling them to help themselves to a cup because it's so exhausting keeping up with making cups of tea. Why not have a glass of water every now & then? There really is no need for copious amounts imo- especially in this weather. Are they addicted?

Nothing wrong with drinking tea. I have about 8 cups a day plus water

FeliciaFancybottom · Yesterday 15:55

It's not normal to have 15 cups of tea a day, and I say that as a tea drinker. Also, we aren't the Borg of beverages; it's unreasonable to say we're all exhausting.

CarbootJunction · Yesterday 15:58

Just get a massive teapot and let them help themselves to several cups.

nicolefromfrance · Yesterday 16:04

How odd. Tell your guests to help themselves, or if they aren’t able, get a tea urn type thing and make a huge amount and leave it out for them. Sort the issue rather than randomly blame people for drinking what they enjoy.

Meckrel · Yesterday 16:06

Every guest I've ever had who likes a cuppa will say "shall I put the kettle on" or I'll make this one". I like a 2nd cup and drink tea throughout the day, but I'm not expecting anyone to make it for me, even when I'm a guest.

ComtesseDeSpair · Yesterday 16:07

I don’t think your friends and relatives are representative of most people, who don’t generally have three hot drinks back to back several times a day. Make the first one on arrival and tell them they have free rein to help themselves after that.

OwlCalledSage · Yesterday 16:10

I think it’s about 2 months since I had a cup of tea, so I don’t get the love either.

Ha you never met my dp's uncle who was Dutch...but severed in what was left of the Dutch Navy on British Ships. A tea pot every half hour. I don't really like tea these days but drank gallons every time we saw him.

Tea btw is the reason why the industrial revolution took off in Britain. We had only swapped to coal fires rather than wood approx 150 years earlier, so hot water was constantly available. Tea came in from china and became popular. Water had to be boiling and that coupled with the slightly antiseptic nature of tea meant that we were able to live in larger towns and more densely....so don't knock tea

We don’t drink tea or coffee, the closest I get to it is rose and hibiscus if I’m cold in winter or the occasional Bovril if I’m freezing. I think my MIL put us all off tea for life, she used to make a huge pot of it and reheat it during the day, it looked like treacle by the last cup. If we have visitors that drink tea I make a pot of it and they help themselves, the same with coffee I put an insulated jug of hot water out. I never understand the tea and biscuit thing either or tea and cake but I’m more of a cheese and savoury person than sweet things.

happysunr1se · Yesterday 16:21

My parents are like this.
When they visit (they live 40 minutes drive away) they must have a cup of tea within 15 minutes of entering the premises. They also must have cake or biscuits with tea.

And also if they come for dinner they want a tea straight after the meal even if they've just had other drinks with the meal.

I truly think they are addicted if not physically then mentally.

Sunloungerhogger · Yesterday 16:38

My DM drinks at least 7 cups a day (but obviously is happy to make it for herself). I suppose when my DMIL visits I do spend the day making a vast amount of cups of tea. I think it’s partly a generation thing. I am a tea drinker but only really max 2 cups a day.

Octavia64 · Yesterday 16:40

I drink a lot of tea but that is because I don’t like plain water much and I don’t drink fizzy drinks or fruit juices because of my teeth.

tea at least has a flavour

whatcanthematterbe81 · Yesterday 16:43

I have 2 back to back when I wake up which a lot of people think is weird, but I’m awake so early and that first one is never enough because the first thing tea is unmatched! I only really have of someone offers me one after that, because I don’t like to refuse one 😂. Anyway, pointless addition to the thread but basically I think 3 every time is a lot

I can drink that without trying! Although I am also more than happy to put the kettle on myself though!

I love tea but don’t get people drinking so much in hot weather, it properly dehydrates me on a normal day (even though in the past few years they’ve debunked it being a dehydrant). I get how calming it can be though so might mean they’re having a lovely chill time with you?

I drink about four cups a day; 15 would make me feel really bloated and full.

SilverBirch4 · Yesterday 16:52

I love tea! I probably have between 6-8 cups most days and if chatting with friends could easily have 2 or 3 over 90 mins.

I don’t think I’m addicted, but I don’t particularly drink much else other than water unless out. I do manage ok on holiday if I can’t get decent tea - bad tea (made with not boiling water) is worse than no tea in my opinion!

Raccoonsmacaroons · Yesterday 16:54

Is it the number of drinks overall you object to OP, or just them being cups of tea?

What/ how much do you drink?

SausageRoll2020 · Yesterday 16:54

I don't drink tea but think you are being very over dramatic talking about how exhausting it is to make a cup.
Just show your guests where the kettle is and let them crack on.

Twoshoesnewshoes · Yesterday 16:56

15 cups sounds about right OP, what’s your problem ?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Yesterday 16:56

Yes, but us tea drinkers are pretty happy with mug-bag-boiling water. We don’t need to turn it into some kind of intellectual superiority smoke & mirrors like “real” coffee drinkers do.

OttersOnAPlane · Yesterday 16:58

I don't really understand it either, OP - my mum wanted a cuppa every other hour throughout the day but never drank water. I don't mind a hot drink first thing, but I can't be arsed with it after that.

Musicaltheatremum · Yesterday 16:58

We drink a lot of tea. My husband is more addicted than I am. We make a flask of black tea each in the morning and use it over the day. Saves boiling the kettle again.

dudsville · Yesterday 17:03

I have a pot of tea every morning, but my DH drinks it throughout the day. Every time he comes in he puts the kettle on. He also has a treat of some sort each time, cake, biscuits, chocolate, whatever.

Twoshoesnewshoes · Yesterday 17:04

Off to make a cup of tea…
