To think it’s not weird to call yourself grand mum

That what I want to be calls when I’m a grandparent
don’t wanna be called nanny which then turns into nan !
don’t wanna be called grandma sounds oddly formal and a bit stiff

blokes get all the good names like grandad and pops etc

grandmum is revolting, it conjures up an elnette hardened perm, pearls, cheeks like puff pastry trowelled with face powder, tightly pursed lips with pink lipstick, brown and beige galore and an affected hyacinth bouquet-esque manner (ie trying to be upper class instead of no class).
nanny is a goat or someone that cares for the children of rich and unwilling mothers
nan sounds like an old scrubber with a long floral skirt, thick tights, bailiffs letters, a nasty demeanour, an extremely overworked washing machine and a potty mouth
gan gan sounds like a speech impediment

Nan/nanny etc all sound common to me. Unfortunately the area I live in has a strong accent and a certain subculture of people so when they refer to their grandmother's it goes like this: 'Me Nan, right.....' or 'Me Nan said no' so now grandmother's being called Nan sounds awful to me. Perhaps it would jar less if I heard it elsewhere.
Grandma/granny sound lovely and quaint and if I ever have the privilege of grandchildren that is what I hope to be called.

A toddler is never going to address you as Grandmum. You'll end up with some shortened version anyway which if you try for Grandmum you may end up with gangum or worse.

Just go for gran or granny or nan

I'll throw another into the mix - Mummum which is Mums mum ( if you are ) heard it a few years ago and thought it lovely.

Mum should be reserved for the mother only, I would have been too thrilled if my mum or MIL decided they were going to be grand mum.
And I absolutely have sabotaged that with a real shit nickname used by us and the kids in retaliation !

I knew someone who joked she wanted to be called Glam ma. It would have suited her as she was glamorous.

My son calls my mum gee gee (Gigi) it was his first attempt at grandma when he was 9 months and it just stuck 😆

My mum came up with some high flown grandparent name bollocks when I was pregnant. Now she is Granny Jo and I’m pretty sure she revels in the title.

Also I have known cases where the grandmother refuses to be called Granny/Nana or anything similar and just ends up called by their name. I don’t think in their hearts many people want their grandchild calling them “Frances” or “Susan” rather than something like Granny.

Are you my ex MIL? Obsessed with nomenclature to the point of calling me her chosen variation of my name which I do not use. She also wanted to be a grandmama/grandmamma, I can’t remember anymore. She forbade her own children from calling her mum as it was too common so her and her husband were mummy and daddy to children in their 40s. I ended up disliking her so much for how controlling she was (names were just a tip of the proverbial iceberg) to the point of my relationship breaking up with her son

I had a posh grandmother who was grandma and a working class grandmother who was granny. Grandma was an arse.

Grandmum sounds ridiculous to my ears but you do you and also you may find that the grandchildren make their own choice in the end.

I'm astonished at all the posts about it somehow usurping the mum title, while the majority of male grandparents are called Grandad! Come on now, that's just ridiculous and precious.

I’ve never heard of Grandmum, I wouldn’t have agreed to it personally. My dad wanted to be called something weird, we just ignored him and used Grandad with the kids.

My boys called my mum mamar (said like mam with r on the end) it's what my eldest called her one day and we stuck with it for the rest of them.
My dh mum is nanny
My grandma is GG as she is their great grandma. I love that but growing up we called her granny as she is Scottish
My dads mum we called nanny as she was Irish.

I called my grandad gang-gang when I was a toddler because I couldn’t say grandad…

My Grans were both nanna, my mum is now nanna but MIL likes grandma. I like Grams, I know it’s American but I think it’s cute.

I’m Grandma; one of my sisters is called something that is a nickname given by her DGC. Personally, I don’t care for Nannie or Nana because it sounds too much like a children’s nanny. But much is family custom and geography: my grandmothers were both Grandma; my own DC had a Grandma and a Granny because in ex’s family, they were all Grannies. Also, as you go down the generations, it becomes increasingly informal - my grandmothers were characterised by their surname; I’m Grandma Christian name. As for Grandmum - just no. I knew someone whose grandparents were known as Grandmummy and Granddaddy, but that’s very much the exception.

What about the classic Gran?

We had Gran and Grandpa (street they lived in) and Gran and Grandpa (town they lived in)
