A Grandma doesn't need the word 'Mum' in her title. A DC only needs one Mum.

GrimDamnFanjo · 19/07/2026 00:49

I’m. Great believer in naming yourself. My mum did this and it’s a unique name that was adopted by all subsequent grandchildren. I have a friend who is Bobo, another is Granny.

DarkchocolateAndtea · 19/07/2026 00:51

It knew a lady who called herself "Momar." There's some strange ones that's for sure!

Stompythedinosaur · 19/07/2026 00:51

It sounds like you want to be called "mum" which isn't really suitable.

RedRock41 · 19/07/2026 00:52

Grandmum imho seems pretentious. Think it sounds daft. Will give everyone who hears it though, a chuckle.

Take it you have no GC but just getting it out there to the universe?

Comtesse · 19/07/2026 00:55

Have you been at the sherry?? Grandmum is bad. Gangan is not posh (and also horrible).

Are you sure it wasn't mormor? That's grandma in Scandinavia.

CypressGrove · 19/07/2026 00:59

How does grand mum sound less formal than grandma??

mondaytosunday · 19/07/2026 01:06

Grandma doesn’t sound formal. Grandmum sounds like you are saying you are a grand as in great.
Kids will call you what they call you. My son calls me ‘ma’. My DD calls me ‘mum’.

takealettermsjones · 19/07/2026 01:10

This has to be a joke 🤣 Grand mum is both ridiculous, like a lofty title in the Freemasons, and annoying to the actual mum. Just be Grandma and crack on!

5foot5 · 19/07/2026 01:11

In what universe is Grandma considered formal?

I am from a working class background and every generation, AFAIK, have used the titles Grandma and Grandad. DH family the same.

DD called all her GPs Grandma and Grandad.

If I am ever in that position I wouldn't expect to be anything else. Sorry if this offends but I would fiercely object to Nanny , Nanna or Nan, though I can't imagine that happening since DD has never used those names for anyone herself.

balozcro · 19/07/2026 01:11

Grandma in our family has always been the’title’ works for us .

KojaksLollipop · 19/07/2026 00:34

Sounds like you’re trying but failing to usurp the real mum. Cringe

Yes this is what I would think too. Visions of overbearing MIL!

Franjipanl8r · 19/07/2026 01:24

How about Grandmama or if you want something more casual you could go for G-ma or G-dog or just “G”.

TheSlantedOwl · 19/07/2026 01:29

Agree with PPs that it immediately made it sound like you want to overstep into mum territory.

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/07/2026 01:37

You could go full on Sheldon Cooper and be Meemaw. Grandmum is awful, as a PP said kids have one Mum - let me guess it's your DS that is about to be a dad?

ValueofNothing · 19/07/2026 02:04

For those who think grandmum is overstepping because it has the word "mum" in it, what do you think the "ma" in grandma stands for? And presumably you can't use the word grandmother either, because it has the word mother in it.

Duckagogo · 19/07/2026 02:19

Nicknames and pet names are chosen for you, so they'll call you what they call you. It's fine to state a preference. And if/when that doesn't work you can make a fuss and sound foolish if you like, of course.

Oh, and grandmum is clunky and unappealing which is why nobody naturally uses it.

well dur, of course we all know what Ma and Mother mean, my opinion on grand mum stands. It is cringe and overstepping.

PollyBell · 19/07/2026 02:25

How is grandad ok but grandmum not? Or grandma?

SpottyPyjama · 19/07/2026 02:36

You don’t get to call yourself any kind of a ‘Mum’ to a child that you are not a mother of.

There’s no way I would have allowed my kids to call anyone other than me Mum. The decision is not yours alone anyway.

MeanwhileinGilead · 19/07/2026 02:37

Did someone say it was ridiculous? To me it sounds perfectly reasonable that if your mother is Mum your then grandmother might be Grand Mum. It just seems like a case of telling your children what you would prefer to be called when and if they have children. They may have other ideas, or their partners might - e.g., "I called MY grandmother Nana/Mom-Mom/Bubbeh, so that's what my children will call their grandmother" - but your best bet is saying in advance what you would like before the first grandchild is born.

Do you feel the same about Grandad?

SpottyPyjama · 19/07/2026 02:49

Do you feel the same about Grandad?

No, because that is an established, well used name for a Grandfather. Just like Grandma or Grandmother is for a Grandmother.

Children get to make up weird and wonderful names for their grandparents. Overstepping Grannies do not.

The logic doesn't make any sense
