I’ve never heard of Grandmum, I wouldn’t have agreed to it personally. My dad wanted to be called something weird, we just ignored him and used Grandad with the kids.

Why couldn't you just let your Dad be called what he wanted to be called?I’m at the point where my friends are becoming grandparents and everyone is choosing what they want to be called…
Vetoing feels weirdly controlling - why does it matter what your children ( not you) call their grandparents ( also not you! A separate relationship…)

MyEasterBonnet · 19/07/2026 08:21

It’s hard to say without it sounding like two words rather than one name. Why not just Gran?

DrumsPleaseFab · 19/07/2026 08:22

Granny!

Not sure if this is a regional one but we use Mammar here for grandmothers or sometimes Nannar

Same here, in the East Midlands.

Pronounced Mom-ar & Non-ar.

My mum however prefers to be Nanny as she thinks the above is common Grin

Grand Mum sounds like you're trying to compete with their actual mum and making yourself look like a tit in the process, sorry.

1983Louise · 19/07/2026 08:29

I was going to be Grandma but my granddaughter called me Mammar when she could first talk so it stuck. I really like it x

Tunnocks34 · 19/07/2026 08:35

We have all the different names.

My Irish grandmother is Granny (first name)
Her mum (still alive) is Nanny (second name)
My mum is grandma (first name)
My own grandmother is Nana (second name) from Salford so this is shortened to ‘Nan’
My husbands mum is ‘Nanzie’ this was her choice - she said it’s a London thing (where she’s from) but I am not sure if it’s just her particularly family.

Westun · 19/07/2026 08:42

In theory it’s a makes sense as a variation on Grandmother / Grandma but it doesn’t flow in the same way which is why it isn’t used widely. I’m not sure why having mum in the name is seen as trying to usurp the actual mum when the other variants aren’t thought of in that way. But, my own children call my mum, Mum, so I have a more relaxed view on the whole thing. It’s what they heard us calling her and so they went with it, and call me Mummy - even now as teens.

mbosnz · 19/07/2026 08:48

Both our mothers are/were called Grandmum. My mother was infuriated, because she felt she had invented and had copyright to that particular title, but Grandmum B had come up with it independently also!

PistachioTiramisu · 19/07/2026 08:50

When I was growing up, I had Granny, Grandma and Grandpa. Nanny and its variations were considered common and I still really dislike it. Grandmum is just plain silly!

Pinksalamana · 19/07/2026 08:51

Had your son/daughter expressed any opinion on this, given that they’re the ones who are going to be using the words most for the first few years at least?

Have you got any Italian heritage you could claim and go full on Nonna. Or is that for grandads?

LooksLikeIPickedTheWrongWeekToQuitDrinking · 19/07/2026 08:52

Just found out I’m going to be a grandmother, so I’ll probably go with Granny, as I had two of those - Thistown Granny and Thattown granny.

Grandmum sounds ridiculous, sorry OP.

Zingading · 19/07/2026 08:55

How would the children’s actual mum feel with you being called that? Gangan is not a universal term. It came from a child’s mispronunciation - as lots of family nicknames do.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 19/07/2026 08:57

I know a few people who get called Grand Mum and it’s fine. The kids developed it from Grandma I think.

We only have one grandparent on each side - my Dad is Grandpa and my MIL is Grandma.

If we have grandchildren one day I’d probably prefer to be Granny but I don’t really mind what they call me!

Wyki · 19/07/2026 09:03

I’m nana to my grandchildren. It’s cute and does the job well

I know a Jewish “Mimi” and Filipino “Lola”

There are other options that don’t include the work mum as that isn’t your title to use in this situation

Heylittlesongbird · 19/07/2026 09:05

I think that only the child’s parent should get to use the term Mum.

Is it your daughter, or daughter in law who’s expecting? If it’s your daughter in law then please don’t be that Grand Mum in law!

ToffeePennie · 19/07/2026 00:32

That’s vile. I want to be Nanny Name-that-rhymes (it’s close enough to my real name) I’m 37 and I still have two Nannie’s - Nanny (nickname) and Nanny First Name.
And it’s wonderful. My mum is Nanny “Posh” and my MIL is Granny but I think Granny sounds really old.

Granny is very young, fun and trendy, I’ll have you know 😁.

dogsarebetterthanppl · 19/07/2026 09:09

TroysMammy · 19/07/2026 07:37

What name do you you use then?

one is gran or my beautiful gran the other one was granny (name) or occasionally in later years a personal nickname only i called her.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 19/07/2026 09:12

DistantEarlyWarning · 19/07/2026 09:06

MIL wants to be Granny - I think it’s a little stuffy but her experience of it is as an informal grandma.

My own mum is already Nanny to my brother’s children so will be to mine as well - she didn’t want to be nanna because that’s what her MIL was called by us!

My auntie thinks that Nanny makes you sound like the Help.

Depends on your experience

NiceCupOfChai · 19/07/2026 09:13

Grandmum is dreadful. I know a family with a Grandmum and it makes me cringe every time I hear it.

dogsarebetterthanppl · 19/07/2026 09:14

teaspoonoflife · 19/07/2026 07:38

🤣🤣🤣

This is all so true- its like a comedy sketch

glad i made you laughGrini often say things like that and people laugh without me being funny, i just have no filter or tolerance for bullshitBlushi would love to see that as a sketch now lol.

LittleMi55Nobody · 19/07/2026 09:23

when i had grandparents we always called them nana and their sir name...ie nana smith .... how weird is that...that was in the 70's

MrsPorridgepot · 19/07/2026 09:24

In some areas there’s definitely hierarchies to the naming. Here, the mother’s mother is Granny, her mother (technically the great grandmother) is then Granny Surname. The father’s mother is Gran and the great grandmother on his side is then Gran Surname.

Topseyt123 · 19/07/2026 09:25

Grand mum sounds utterly ridiculous. I'd certainly struggle not to chuckle if I heard a child having to call that out in public. Grandma sounds best and is in no way particularly formal.

My parents were Grandma and Grandad to my children, as were DH's parents. There were never any problems at all.

If I ever have grandchildren I'd hope to be called Grandma. Far more natural as far as I am concerned. I wouldn't want to be called Nanny because to me that's a female goat.

truffleruffle · 19/07/2026 09:26

Why not get gran then your name?
like Gran Kara. Then it means both grans are presented differently

DontDareCallMeDarling · 19/07/2026 09:27

We had Grandma Brenda and though her actual name is Shirley, Grandma Seaside because she lives in Whitby.
