I'm definitely not old, nor do I have an old outlook, but am Nana to my grandkids. Before they arrived, I was adamant I didn't want to be Grandma, Granny, Nana, anything like that because it's OLD. But when those little beauties call me Nana, I don't feel old. I feel proud that I have a special name, hard to explain but I suspect you'll be the same! Grandmum sounds... weird. Sorry!

Grandma, nana, nan, gran, grams, and granny are the common terms. Grand mum sound weird… like you’re saying you’re a grand ma’am. Even grandmama sounds better than grandmum.

My step mother went with YiaYia which I think is Greek. She’s not Greek but she picked it anyway 😂

Weirdly I’ve just realised my dad is called Pedros by the grandkids. Literally cannot remember why but even I call him Pedros now.

His name is John.

I have an italian niece and nephew so I'm Zia-name, which sounds pretty cool. But i wouldn't try to make my other nieces and nephews call me that.

It's 'nanny' I don't like. I think it's weird that the same word used for someone hired to do childcare is a form of address for a grandmother.

It reminds me once when I was teaching a novel set in a minor stately home in the early 20thc, one student had completely misread the entire first part (a sort of rivalry between the aristocratic children's former nanny, still employed, and the governess who had supposedly taken over their care to prep them for prep school) because the student thought that the nanny was the children's grandmother. Why she thought an aristocratic matriarch would be wearing a servant's uniform and sleeping in a garret was another matter.

My mum ended up as a Nee Nee.

MIL was just known as the town she lived in.

I had a Nanny and a Granny (to differentiate the sides I presume) My DM had a Nanny and a Gran-Gran. My DDs have a Nanny and we refer to their other late Grandma as Granny and DH also had a Nanny and a Granny.

As in 'Hi Birmingham, are you going to come and see us soon?' Or 'Granny Birmingham'?

I really wonder at this 'upstaging' mindset. Presumably the same one that spends weddings on the lookout for anyone in a pale dress to tick them off in case they 'upstage' the bride, or who pitches a fit if a family member announces an engagement/ pregnancy within months of your Special Announcement, and feels even visible though not generally known about pregnancies should be concealed with smock dresses and excuses about bloat at other people's weddings, lest they 'steal the thunder' of the bride and groom.

I remember threads on here where someone was genuinely outraged that her cousin had set her wedding date on the OP's birthday 'because then it will always be X and Y's wedding anniversary rather than my birthday in the family!' (?!), where someone felt it was terribly bad form to get married sooner than someone who had announced their engagement earlier, or to have your wedding within the same 'wedding season' as someone else in your extended family or friendship circles.

Clearly some people really didn't get enough parental attention as babies.

What's wrong with granny? I'm granny and DH is grandad. Kids love it and that all that matters.

You can ask to be called anything you like. Doesn't mean that what the grandkids will call you. My granddaughters other grandma gets called Dee-dee as that what the first granddaughter called her. My mom wanted Grandmama, she is Grammy. Mine was easy I just wanted Nan and the kids all managed that. Here in Canada not many grandmas get called Nan. alot get Nana, but mine all use Nan.

I know a mormor (from a family with Scandinavian roots) and a momar so they are distinct names.

I personally don’t like Grand Mum. I think the key is what your daughter/daughter in law(s) would think. It does sound like you are trying to out do them.

do you think so? my gran (who people often think is my mother and occasionally ask if she was a teenager when she had me) was always known as the cool gran, her and me have quite a few clothing items the same but different colours, she’s the very furthest thing from a stereotypical granny.

I prefer the full title - grandmother.
