Do people really let the kids decide? How does everyone refer to the GP before the kids start speaking? How come almost every GP ends up with one of a few common names if the kids have decided themselves without outside influence?

Yes, some people don't tell their kids what to call them. I was an only child and called my parents by their first names until I started school because that's what everyone else called them. I didn't know I was supposed to use different names for them! I also called my maternal grandmother 'mum' for a while because that's what my mum called her.

My paternal grandparents already had other grandkids by the time i was born, so I copied my cousins and called them grandma and grandad.

From the other side of the pond here.

I am a Nana. My Mom was Mum.
My DH is Papa. My Dad was Pa.
My MIL is now Gigi (for Great-Grandma but works for Grandmother too)

There is also Mimi (a friend with 20+ grandchildren is Mimi and the BEST grandma I could ever hope to know)

I think whatever works for YOU is what you should use.

My DD named my Mom. My Mom was holding her and I had just said "Mom, ....." and my DD looked up at my Mom and said "Mum" and said it a few more times and that was it. (She was only 5-6 months old so words were not her thing. Didn't matter to my Mom though.)

What about Grammy/Grammie instead of Granny? I’ve heard that a few times and thought it was cute.

Pearshapedpear · 19/07/2026 04:14

The Royal family use ‘Gangan’

DogearedPaperbackWriter · 19/07/2026 04:14

I'm fond of 'granny'. (Yes, it sounds old. So what? A grandmother is usually old, in the eyes of the grandchild. There's nothing wrong with being old.)

Ultimately, I don't think it matters what anyone else thinks about it. Call yourself what you like and hope everyone else follows suit.

Bubbleybees · 19/07/2026 04:19

My MIL went for a name which sounds awfully like mumma and it felt quite encroaching tbh. That's what grandmum makes me think of. But I agree that's hypocritical when you consider most males would be grandad!

CalmConfident · 19/07/2026 04:22

None mentioned Gran as an option

That is the short version of Grandma that my DC now call my mum alongside Grandad

DH side always. Nanna & Grandpa

UrOutdoors · 19/07/2026 04:23

We called our grandma, Gran.

CalmConfident · 19/07/2026 04:24

Parallel posts @UrOutdoors 😊

ItsNotMeEither · 19/07/2026 04:56

Grandma, totally fine, pretty normal.

Grand Mum, absolutely ridiculous. Sounds like you want everyone to know you are somehow better than the mother.

DontSayItsOver · 19/07/2026 04:57

Grandmum 🤣🤣 don’t be daft 🤣

Piskeyqueen8 · 19/07/2026 05:07

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/07/2026 01:37

You could go full on Sheldon Cooper and be Meemaw. Grandmum is awful, as a PP said kids have one Mum - let me guess it's your DS that is about to be a dad?

I am a very proud 1st time "Meemaw" to a wonderful granddaughter.😀

MNLurker1345 · 19/07/2026 05:11

Couldn’t be a nanny, nana, nan or granny, I am grandma!

ElenOfTheWays · 19/07/2026 05:14

My mum and stepdad are Grams and Gramps to my DD. Mainly because that's what I called my own grandparents on my mums side. Neither I nor DD made that choice. Its what they wanted to be called.

But I agree with those posters who said that Grand Mum is clunky and weird sounding. Especially separated into two words. Why do that? Its not usual. Grandad, grandma, grandmother, grandfather - always one word.

OhBettyCalmDown · 19/07/2026 05:17

My initial reaction to this was similar to others in that it sounds like your trying to put force mum in your name but realistically we all accept grandad without issue. Whilst I still don’t like it, I find it jarring if that’s what you want to be called crack on and ignore the rest of us.

caramelsauce · 19/07/2026 05:17

Not sure if this is a regional one but we use Mammar here for grandmothers or sometimes Nannar

Chickadee26 · 19/07/2026 05:21

Grandmother or Grandma is better that Grand Mum.

Whatever you choose, please don't ever refer to yourself as GLAMMA.

I die from cringiness when I hear that one.

PeachySmile2 · 19/07/2026 05:27

My Grandmum has always been called Grandmum. She’s now 89 and us grandchildren are in our 30s. It will be normal in your family if you want it to be! My own mum is Meemaw as she says Grandmum sounds too old.

PeachySmile2 · 19/07/2026 05:30

Piskeyqueen8 · 19/07/2026 05:07

Wondering if you are my mum who is also a recent first time Meemaw to a granddaughter?? Mum, is this you?? 😂😂

HoppingPavlova · 19/07/2026 05:32

Yeah, no. If anything it sounds more suitable for a great grandmother, who is still alive (clinging on), and gets an honourable title. It’s plain weird.

toomanycoffeecups · 19/07/2026 05:33

I cannot think of many other possibilities quite a grim as grand mum. Is it some kind of hope that the kid will drop the grand part and just call you mum ? Nothing wrong with Granny or Grandma. I had one of each. I also dislike nan or nanny. That’s the lady who is paid to look after the kids in posh homes - never understood how it got usurped for grandmother .

TheeNotoriousPIG · 19/07/2026 05:41

I can't say that I've ever heard of it. My grandmother is either Grandma or Grandmama. Toddler DN (who is just getting their head around addressing everyone by name) currently addresses my mother as, "Nan-ma".

My Mum proclaimed herself as G-Mama 13 years ago… and it stuck!!

TheSlantedOwl · 19/07/2026 01:29

Agree with PPs that it immediately made it sound like you want to overstep into mum territory.

Agree. I’m sure you don’t mean to, but adding a prefix to a word inevitably makes it sound like you are viewing yourself as a type of that thing. Which is likely to cause controversy, as we have seen elsewhere. This is especially the case if the prefix is ‘grand’ - overtones of Űbermum / Chief High Mum 🫠

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 19/07/2026 06:18

Just makes you sound self-obsessed tbh.
