My mum wanted to be “nana” as that’s what she called her grandparents. My eldest called her Nanny and wouldn’t be moved so it stuck. You don’t always get to choose.

My MIL goes by Gigi.

There’s a few I know of called that but spelt mama. They tend to be in certain areas of Sheffield closer to Barnsley, so possibly Yorkshire/more northern? Usually nannan where I live.

YANBU, you should be called whatever you want (I said this to my mum even though I disliked what she originally chose, although she changed her mind and ended up as grandma with no pressure).

Having said that, nanny doesn't have to become nan. Just ask them to call you nanny, not nan, and it will stick. I know a couple of people who have nanny's that have never become nan.

My grandmother was always Nanny not Nan. The other was Gran. It's got to be easy for tiny children to say.

A Finnish friend is Moomi which is very sweet.

I do think there are just no decent names for grandmother that sidestep unfavourable or at least patronising connotations of frailty, dowdiness or senility. (grab a Granny - over-25s nights at clubs, granny pants, driving like a grandma, knitted by nanas etc) And a nanny to me is either a goat or someone paid to look after another person’s children! Whereas grandfather names don’t tend to have those associations.

It’s the same with Father - Father Time, Father Christmas, desert fathers, founding fathers, Holy Father for the pope.
Whereas Mother, some common cultural associations include - Mother Goose, stop mothering me, knees-up Mother Brown, ‘motherhood and apple pie’, Tiger Mom, Motherf*er…. I know there is mother tongue and Mother Earth but 😤

My experience has been that grandparents who get wound up over their grandparent name are invariably in denial that they are indeed old enough to be grandparents. “I’m not a regular granny! I’m a cool granny!” type thing.

Grandmum is not the weirdest name you could go for but why make it harder than it needs to be.

I called my grandmother Gran. Easy to say even if it first it sounds like “gan”. Grandmum… don’t love it. Sounds far formal than grandma. Besides sometimes the adult in question doesn’t get a say because the child/children decide.

It also makes me think you want the word ‘mum’ in there. You won’t be the gdcs mother. Being a grandparent is a very different role to being a parent.

There are very...literal names that are used in Denmark.

• Morfar (mum's dad)
• Farmor (dad's mum)
• Farfar (dad's dad)

I'm unlikely to be a grandmother any time soon but if I do I will not be a "nanny". My son had nannies as a child.

I think a grandma/nana chosing a name with "mum" in the title is weird, you aren't their mum, but then to stick "grand" in front of it 🫣! God if my mother in law had suggested this I'd have said no, I mean I would my own mum, but it would have felt more weird her suggesting it. My children have a grandma (posh/stuffy) and a nana (a proper fun, loving grandparent). I had nana surname and nana surname. I find nana is just a nicer name, probably because mine were called that and they were both lovely.

One of my granny's was Grand mum. Funnily enough, it was the one we hardly ever seen!

I called one of my grandmothers ‘Grandmum’. It’s normal to me!

The late Queen also apparently went by Gary for a while as one of the grandkids couldn’t say Granny.

Wont list them as they're incredibly outing but the women on my family have totally random/made up grandma names. You can be called genuine whatever you like. Think along the lines of Bungee....because she's the nana who lives in a bungalow! Also meet a lady who got affectionately called PG because she was the posh grandma 🤣❤️
