Vegans

I find them a bit meh. I'm happy for them to do their own thing if they leave me alone. I think this is overstepping. Do vegans not have pets? After all, keeping pets is just forcing animals to live and be controlled by humans.

classic, i have yet to meet a reasonable vegan

QuaintBeaker · 11/07/2026 12:59

Agreed.
So many vegans keep pets because they're 'animal lovers'... but isn't that just as bad? A vegan acquaintance of mine got a puppy from a breeder, which feels even more hypocritical. Not least because more animals now have to die to feed her dog.
Like... wtf?

Chefpig · 11/07/2026 13:03

I know one and they try to shut down conversations about meat or animal products even if it's a conversation they're not involved in and they pull faces until the people who are conversation feel uncomfortable. They're also very unreasonable and woke in other areas of life. I was a vegan myself for a good while but wasn't a twat with it.

AlgaeDreams · 11/07/2026 13:05

I couldn't care less, I'm yet to meet a vegan who announces it.

Surely the protest was about animal/bird welfare and they happen to be vegan.

I was vegetarian early 90s for over 15 years. My food was naturally vegan because there was no Quorn or meat substitutes.

I don't recall annoying anbody, but I think if I came across you, that you'd annoy me regardless of views.

Kokonimater · 11/07/2026 13:09

I have family members who are plant based. They don’t talk about it or act remotely superior. It’s a private thing that matters to them. They care deeply about how animals are farmed. And live their life with as much integrity to their beliefs as possible. They did have a rescue cat that was found frozen in snow as a kitten and had life long breathing problems. They went without themselves to pay for vet bills. The cat lived for 15 years on special diet and an inhaler. Don’t judge. Many vegans are quiet and private about it.
they are good people. I wish I could be so disciplined.

4Lightz · 11/07/2026 13:10

Vegans aren’t ok with breeding animals for human exploitation, including pets. If the animal already exists and is in a rehoming centre, and they feel they could offer it a good home, they are generally ok with that. But getting a pet from a breeder is not vegan.

5128gap · 11/07/2026 13:12

Yes OP, you're totally right. If a vegan is not 100% perfect in every aspect of animal welfare, health and environmental considerations, you as a meat eater have every right to render the contributions they are making in these areas as worthless. And given they are obviously raging hypocrits because they feed their obligate carnivore rescue cat meat, they are actually thoroughly all round wrong uns and miscreants. And boring and aneamic to boot.

Yetanotherone12 · 11/07/2026 13:14

how does that work? Vegetarians aren’t “naturally vegan” if they don’t eat meat substitutes, they are vegan if they don’t eat dairy, eggs or other animal products.

i am vegetarian and don’t like quorn or meat substitutes so don’t eat them. That doesn’t make me vegan because I eat cheese and eggs….

WillThingsEverBeFergaliciousAgain · 11/07/2026 13:14

There are a group of vegans around here who find it appropriate to hand out leaflets to everyone, including kids, saying that cheese is made from rape and murder, complete with graphic photos. They have also been known to sit in front of the milk and meat aisles in supermarkets harassing people and not letting them pass.

Im sure there are lots of lovely ones who truly (and quietly) care, but equally there are lots of activists who piss everyone off as well, and those are the ones we hear about.

Malbecfan · 11/07/2026 13:17

DD1 is a vegan. She was never a meat fan so when she went to uni became vegetarian and then realised that she was lactose intolerant so veganism was just another step.

She never tries to impose her views on the rest of us when she’s home. Due to her fondness for travel, she doesn’t have any pets either. When she became a vegan I was worried about what she would eat when she came home, but it has not been an issue. At Christmas, we decided to have an entirely vegan meal (bought from M&S) and it was cheap and delicious. Our experience with her and her BF is that it is no big deal.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 11/07/2026 13:18

They’re generally a pretty insufferable bunch. The thing that particulate irks me is when they post their food on social media and have to make it clear it is a #vegan cheese board or whatever. Side note, vegan cheese is vile.

Thankfully it’s on the decline.

I think calling oneself “plant based” has to be even more irritating surely?

RubyPowderPuff · 11/07/2026 13:20

Hypothetical.

The easiest way to highlight animal welfare, conservation and habitat destruction is by getting people close up to said animals. Show them how beautiful they are and explain how important they are to the eco system. Missed opportunity, if you ask me.

backformoreofthesame · 11/07/2026 13:22

It’s only irritating if you suspect there is some validity in what they are

let them live their lives. There isn’t a correlation between horrible people, judgy people , arrogant people and diet that I have noticed

otherwise you wouldn’t get threads judging people’s dietary choices

The problem is, if we post a picture and just say “cheese board” everyone piles on with “i thought you were vegan” but if we say “vegan cheese board” they complain we’re shoving it down their throats. Can’t win. What are we supposed to do just never talk about or share pics of food we enjoy?

I'm not vegan but I'm concerned about the welfare of birds of prey kept like that. Carted around, chained up and pestered by endless people, must be unsettling or even terrifying for them.

Likewise cat cafes. Animals do not exist to provide entertainment.

What did you have for Christmas Dinner?

thank you for this.
I have been vegetarian for 46 years and vegan for 1. I went vegan after my daughter convinced me that the dairy industry is as bad as the meat industry. I don’t act dismissively or immaturely, but I do talk about factory farming when asked.

I was vegetarian for a few years in the 90’s I certainly wasn’t vegan as still ate diary and eggs and honey

i often won’t eat meat or fish for a few weeks but never substitute it with pretend meat you don’t need these to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet it just makes it more varied

IsYourTableClothed · 11/07/2026 13:31

Vegans oppose animal exploitation and imprisonment, so no, we don't agree with pet "ownership", particularly not breeding animals.

So annoying, isn't it? Why can't we all just kill in peace!

Malbecfan · 11/07/2026 13:31

MsGreying · 11/07/2026 13:28

What did you have for Christmas Dinner?

Melon starter with other fruits, M&S vegan roast (like a turkey breast joint), roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, sprouts & red cabbage, then a vegan chocolate torte thing from M&S. I prepped all the veg & red cabbage so I did do some of it from scratch. The whole lot only took 45 mins to cook, so saved a fortune in electricity too!

Yeah, chickens too, crammed into those huge slaughterhouse trucks in crates. It's really, really sad.

UprightCitizensBrigade · 11/07/2026 13:34

I am vegan because of a metabolic disease I have. I dont talk about it to anyone irl unless there is no other choice because then it inevitably leads to having to explain the disease. I don't understand the hatred towards vegans though?

Onefairfish · 11/07/2026 13:36

Whenever someone describes themselves as ‘plant based’ I can’t help wondering how much of their DNA is sprouts.
