AIBU to wear a floral dress my brother's girlfriend calls white to their wedding?

My brother is getting married in three weeks and I’ve bought a fairly expensive dress for his wedding. His gf saw my dress and said she thought it was inappropriate because she claims it’s white. The reality is that it’s not white, it has a red and green floral pattern. I don’t really have time to find a new dress but my brother keeps asking me if I’ve found something new, saying he and his gf are worried other guests will talk about me behind my back if I show up wearing something white (it’s not white!!). I think it’s so rude that they’re trying to police what I wear, especially when they know I had to call off my wedding last year and he’s my brother so I should get to wear something special to his wedding!

post a pic of it? doesn’t sound like it if it’s a floral pattern

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 25/06/2026 21:30

You having to call off your wedding last year has got bugger all to do with what you can wear to your DB’s wedding - why have you mentioned this?

ChaChaChaChanges · 25/06/2026 21:31

It’s their wedding, and they don’t want you to wear it - that’s the only thing that matters.

Chillyegg · 25/06/2026 21:31

Please post a picture . I would say but a new dress.if the brides concerned then do.its not about you .

RoseField1 · 25/06/2026 21:31

You have 3 weeks. The internet exists. Buy a new dress FFS.

outerspacepotato · 25/06/2026 21:32

The bride told you what she thought about it, it's too white. You can wear it and offend her or find something else and not offend her.

MrsKateColumbo · 25/06/2026 21:32

Im not precious about white dresses at weddings but honestly it's easy for you to wear literally any other dress or skirt and keep them happy. He's your brother, i would humour him even if you dont agree, it's not worth the drama

shoofly · 25/06/2026 21:32

YABU not to post a pic. How can we judge otherwise? But without a pic I have to say if the Bride says no, she says no.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/06/2026 21:32

Depends how white it is

need a pic

and his wedding isn’t your special day or the time to wear a special dress lol

ofcolitas · 25/06/2026 21:32

we really need to see a picture to make an informed decision.

ScrimMN · 25/06/2026 21:32

If the bride has actually said to you it’s too white- you shouldn’t be wearing it

Pansypots · 25/06/2026 21:32

You have three weeks to find a dress. Let us know what size you need and we'll help!

It's not worth fighting over and will just create resentment and bad feelings in the long run.

Blueberries0761 · 25/06/2026 21:32

It's their wedding, the bride has seen your dress and doesn't approve so change it. Their wedding day is not about you.

lunar1 · 25/06/2026 21:33

Is it really the hill to die on?

Waheymum · 25/06/2026 21:34

Put YABU because I wore a white dress with a colorful floral print (a high street brand, secondhand from a vinted seller) for my own wedding.

oviraptor21 · 25/06/2026 21:35

If you're not bothered about your relationship with your brother and his soon-to-be wife then by all means wear your white patterned dress. Otherwise buy something more coloured.
Fwiw it wouldn't bother me if you wore the white patterned dress but I'm not the bride in this scenario.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 25/06/2026 21:36

The bride has told you she thinks it's too white. That's the only opinion that matters. Doesn't matter if any number of people think she's wrong, you'll upset her on her wedding day if you wear it. Just don't.

Does it come on any other colours you could swap it for?

DappledThings · 25/06/2026 21:37

It's almost certainly completely fine for anyone who isn't a tedious narcissist of a bride. But sometimes you have to grit your teeth and humour these people for a quiet life.

44PumpLane · 25/06/2026 21:37

" I had to call off my wedding last year and he’s my brother so I should get to wear something special to his wedding!"

By all means wear something special, like every other guest there will be wearing something special, because it's a wedding and people make an effort!!!!

But don't be a dick, the bride has asked you not to wear the dress so, assuming she's not a total bridezilla, take the dress back and buy something else!

I literally bought a beautiful cobalt blue Hobbs dress on Vinted the other day for £30 from a professional shop/seller- I ordered it Saturday and it arrived Wednesday and it's fabulous.

CatMummyOf3 · 25/06/2026 21:39

"especially when they know I had to call off my wedding last year ... so I should get to wear something special ..."

I was taking you at your word that it's not white, but this stood out.
It's not your wedding 2.0, it's their wedding. Without a picture I can't be certain but I do suspect it is inappropriate to wear.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 25/06/2026 21:39

I would have thought that most people knew to stir clear of the white dress as a wedding guest or one that’s mostly white.

Timeforatincture · 25/06/2026 21:41

WTF sort of weird bride has conversations with guests about what they might wear to the wedding? She seems to have got entirely the wrong idea of what the day is about.

Wear what you damn well like.

FWC2026 · 25/06/2026 21:41

shoofly · 25/06/2026 21:32

YABU not to post a pic. How can we judge otherwise? But without a pic I have to say if the Bride says no, she says no.

My brother would be getting told 'This is the dress I have bought for your wedding. I can come wearing it or not come. Your choice'

but I say this knowing I wouldn't choose something inappropriate & my SIL is a bitch who would complain it was 'too white' if it was bright red.

Booksandsea · 25/06/2026 21:41

This is a reverse isn’t it?? Must be! Bride and Groom think it’s too white and don’t want you to wear it. Why annoy them? The called off wedding is irrelevant

outerspacepotato · 25/06/2026 21:43

Their wedding is NOT all about you.

Stay away if you can't do what they've asked, which is wear something else.
