WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

No opp to go to the beach over weekend?

viques · 25/06/2026 13:17

I would, except I wouldn’t want to take a laptop in case I fancied a paddle. I just know I would drop it in the sea, either that or a rogue wave would sweep in and carry it away, together with my sandals.

If I go, I definitely will want a paddle. I'd probably ask DH to look after it or pop home to put it away.

New to mumsnet then.

Do whatever you want. Obviously. Seems peculiar to ask mumsnet when we have squat all idea about your job etc.

and really…. Just, well, don’t be silly posting something that is obviously going to irritate many who are slogging their guts out in the office or commuting.

And I say this as someone who has the afternoon off work and is sunbathing

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 25/06/2026 13:18

I work near the beach so I am having lunch at the beach. It's quite cloudy!

Figgygal · 25/06/2026 13:19

It depends
Are you going in your lunch break or are you pretending to be working while you swan off to the beach?
If it's the first a slightly longer lunch break I'm sure is not a problem. If it's the latter then I think you should look at your own values and whether you think you're acting with integrity

FourLittleCars · 25/06/2026 13:19

How will you work though? Does the beach have wifi?

Killdeer · 25/06/2026 13:19

It sounds mad to me. Unless your beach is a little-known remote cove where you have to climb down a cliff to get there, it will be thronged and unpleasant. Go after work, when it will be cooler, the water will be nicer for a swim and some people will have gone home.

BringBackCatsEyes · 25/06/2026 13:19

It really depends on your work set up.
I'm likely to take a long lunch break tomorrow to swim in the lake.
All fine - we are an entirely remote company so, while it is expected we generally work core hours in our time zone, there is a lot of flexibility. This takes into account the need for us to sometimes be at work very early or very late.
We are trusted employees.
I'll drop my manager a note and it'll be fine.

I really couldn't care less if people are irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing. That's like me going online and seeing a random person on holiday or a celebrity living a luxurious life and getting upset about it.

I'm not sure what relevance my job has but I'm a software developer.

I was thinking it would be quieter whilst people are at school/work to be honest.

Her OP says "go to the beach at lunchtime".
The contentious issue is staying out longer and feeling she needs to have her phone/laptop with her. If her employers allow this then fine. Only she knows that.

But you do care about whether or not you should work on the beach?

so if the consensus was “no don’t”… you’ve wouldn’t?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/06/2026 13:22

Wfh and having your lunch break at the beach = fine, imo, @peachyhead. Attempting to WFB (work from beach) = less acceptable. I don’t think you would be able to work as well there as at home or in the office.

I may stay a little longer and work in a cafe on the beach or something. I would definitely be getting my work done - I often work outside of my set hours and have a heavy workload. My query was more of a moral one as although I'd be getting my work done, I wouldn't tell my employer I had gone to the beach.

Are your local schools not closed/on half day?

It's definitely quieter here in the evening at the moment (SW)

Morally it's wrong otherwise you would have no problem telling work....
