To cancel date over his ‘joke’?

Datingwoee · 23/06/2026 15:52

5th date tomorrow night with a man who has been great up to now. I’ve had to push the time back by an hour - said I’ll need extra time to freshen up after work. His reply to me was: “No worries, can’t be having a whiffy growler lol”.

Is that date cancelling worthy or am I being a bit too harsh?

My immediate reaction was Eww.

Cherrysoup · 23/06/2026 16:47

Have to say that would give me serious ick.

Duvetdayneeded · 23/06/2026 16:47

Way too gross for a new relationship especially!! Eeewww

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 23/06/2026 16:47

It would depend on how much I liked him and if there was anything else that made me cringe. Over the years I’ve made a decent amount of jokes that have landed flat because sometimes I don’t think before I speak - so on the one hand I kind of get it. On the other hand it’s a minging comment and the word “growler” made me fucking wince.

FastFood · 23/06/2026 16:47

I just screamed.
If you don't cancel I'll cancel it for you right here right now and I'll cancel it again tomorrow and everyday for the rest of the year.

seanconneryseyebrow · 23/06/2026 16:48

Thats really funny - made me snort! its how I talk to friends/partner/brothers. If it was a new person I was dating I would be a bit taken aback - but also be quite excited that they had the same crude humour as me/my close circle. Hed probably be a keeper for me. If you aren't that way inclined though then don't go there.

Zebracat · 23/06/2026 16:50

I’ve never heard of a growler. Guessing it’s slang for vulva, but is it like fanny , which I think is neutral, pussy, which I think is ghastly and twee , or is it more like twat or minge, which I would not expect an adult to use?

Georgieporgie29 · 23/06/2026 16:51

Well where I’m from a growler is a pork pie 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 but yeah it’s a bit grim after a few dates.

Firefly100 · 23/06/2026 16:51

Are you sleeping with him? If yes then I think it is a poor joke but nothing major. If not, then that is date cancelling for me. Major ick from a man im not intimate with.

I guess that proves the saying there's someone out there for everyone, you're in luck that there's not going to be anyone else fighting you for him on the basis of the replies so far 😀

Why is it funny?

Ask him what he means with faux innocence

Personally, I wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole.

if its a one off comment then in context of no humans being perfect then otherwise where do you draw the line, eg the next boy friend makes a comment or similar do you dump that one then next etc yes its grim and it depends on context but unless your a robot then no one is perfect, @Datingwoee

Not being willing to deal with a man that comes out with…that…is hardly demanding perfection. I’d personally call it having basic standards.

And yes, I wouldn’t hesitate to keep dumping.

Is it just his way of hinting he wants sex? I'd bring it up. "That joke you made earlier, was that you hinting about something".. anyone can act normal for 4 dates, just be careful he isn't a secret douchebag(!)

GilesTurnbull · 23/06/2026 16:53

Delete, block. He’s shown you his mysogyny. Run away now.

OriginalSkang · 23/06/2026 16:53

It does imply that the relationship is based purely on sex

pilates · 23/06/2026 16:55

💯 cancel

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/06/2026 16:55

Oh jeez. How old is he? Sounds v immature. If my partner of a zillion years, who I would know was joking, said this, I’d probably laugh. A new man? No.

Eudaimonia11 · 23/06/2026 16:56

I usually think MN who post similar thread titles are quite precious with no sense of humour but not in this case.

It’s the word growler, it’s such a horrible word. There’s no reason for him to be referring to your body like that. I wouldn’t see him again.

GrandmasCat · 23/06/2026 16:56

Jesus! Release back into the wild pronto!

Jackiepumpkinhead · 23/06/2026 17:00

I think he’s hinting that he wants to have sex with you on this date. He’s gross. Why would a man think that’s what women want to hear.

Datingwoee · 23/06/2026 17:01

GisGasGus · 23/06/2026 16:03

Have you slept together yet? Definitely ick if not and still ick if you have really

Yeah after our last date. I’ve definitely got the ick now.

hididdlyho · 23/06/2026 17:01

Unless you've had previous banter using similar sorts of phrases I'd be quite shocked by the message. Does his humour generally seem a bit off piste? (I might coin 'whiffy growler' as a nickname for my dog as it's a pretty accurate description).

Andnowshesatoddler · 23/06/2026 17:03

It would definitely be one step over the line. If he already had one step over it would be a gonner if it was genuinely just a gross misjudged trying to be funny comment I would just be one foot over the line but next time . . . .
