AIBU to dress up to match my son for his prom?

MissRaspberryRipples · 13/06/2026 14:39

Hi there. My son has his high school prom coming up next month as he's 16 and doing his GCSEs at the moment. He's chosen his outfit choices and I've purchased both suits that he liked so he has a choice. He's gone for purple suits which are lovely. I've also purchased myself a lovely purple dress and some nice shoes so that he can have some lovely mum and son photos taken on his special night. I showed them to my partner and all he has said is that they're nice and will look great but why am I making such an effort when it's not even my night? He says it's silly and isn't necessary. He thinks I'm overdoing it on the effort for a night that isn't for me. Is it really unreasonable to want to make the effort or is he just being unnecessarily mean

Get a purple limousine!

Grammarnut · 13/06/2026 16:08

It's his prom. Doubt he wants naff photos of him and his mum in matching outfits. Send the dress back and chill.

I don't do fake nails or even makeup I just like the idea of making an effort to look nice even if it is only for a photo. I'm not about to stalk my son to his prom he's going with his friends. I would have chosen a purple dress even if his suit wasn't purple to be perfectly honest

Your thread is literally called “AIBU to dress up to match my son for his prom?” 😂

Did you get dressed up to match your DD’s for photos on their proms?

Yes, OP did you do this? If not, why?

Poppasocks · 13/06/2026 16:09

PMSL this CANNOT be real?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Never laughed so hard I set the guinea pigs off in the garden before! 😂

Your son’s going in a purple suit? Is the prom fancy dress? Is he going as a gameshow host?

As for you and the matching dress, don’t even think about it.

He chose purple as he likes the colour. No need to take the piss.

Each to their own but it would never occur to me to want to do this - just a hard no.

Also, you bought him two suits so he'd 'have a choice'... what is happening in this country with the obsession with prom night? They're 16 and it's a slightly tragic party held by their school. My DDs are about to have theirs and also find it really embarrassing. They've bought a dress from Vinted, are being driven there in their friend's dad's van, and I wouldn't be surprised if I get a 'please come and rescue us from this absolute embarrassment of an evening' phone call at about 9pm.

sittingonabeach · 13/06/2026 16:11

Do you do this with all your DC?

So after you have got dressed up for the photo what is your plan? Or is this a photo shoot?

Boomer55 · 13/06/2026 16:11

You’ll make him look silly. So best not,

I think it sounds cool, ignore that poster.
I love the colour purple.
You dressing up to match him for his prom is a bit weird though.

And what do you think you'll be doing by posing in a matching coloured dress on his Prom Night? What a reddy he'll get if this got out to his pals...

I went to my eldest dd's prom. She wore a purple dress (vintage velvet Laura Ashley if anybody cares, along with black New Rock boots and a Mohawk). I wore a navy tux and bowtie.

(I teach at the school she attended. We took a selfie outside and that was it).

OP, I think it's a bizarre thing to do but if you don't care and he doesn't care, then do it. I find fake nails bizarre too. And eyelashes on cars. But these things don't affect me one iota.

Wonder if anyone's gonna sit here taking the piss out of your comment on here too?

Must have done, sorry - it wasn't in your OP so must have somehow missed that one.

TequillaSunset · 13/06/2026 16:16

I don't get the outrage. If she was planning to escort him to the venue then yeah, it's weird. But the woman wants a matchy matchy photo. Ffs what is the issue!! It isn't to my taste - style wise - but it's hardly outrage worthy.

My DD's would laugh and indulge me.

I find it funny. As long as her ds is ok with it then fgs there are bigger issues to be 'icked' about.

That poster didn't dress to match them. That's the weird bit.

sittingonabeach · 13/06/2026 16:16

Did your older DC miss both Secondary and College proms (ie when they were 16 and 18)

Do you plan to do the same with the younger ones?

outerspacepotato · 13/06/2026 14:41

Oh honey, no.

Absolutely this.

I am 100% with your partner on this. It will be silly on the night, and it’s really not about you !

No, because that poster worked at the school and didn't match her daughter's outfit

watchingthishtread · 13/06/2026 16:17

There is no reason for you to buy a new anything for yourself for this occasion. It is not your occasion.

Of course, there are bigger issues, but the OP asked AIBU about this particular one.
