DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

anotherdaytosmile · Yesterday 12:27

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

Where does TK Maxx get their soap from. You only see soaps like that in posh Italian and Spainish shops?

Have a soap each. Dh has his coal tar stuff and I use whichever one I like

DH had bought luxury coal tar soap but luckily he has finished it. Absolutely stinks!!!!

EndorsingPRActice · Yesterday 13:06

We always had pink lux bars, or occasionally white lux bars. Feeling nostalgic.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · Yesterday 13:07

Wright's coal tar soap all the way. It's the only soap that doesn't make my skin itchy. It smells amazing and gets you nice and clean 😊

MabelAnderson · Yesterday 13:08

I am definitely team soap. Both my dc get dermatitis from liquid hand wash but not soap. The joy of unwrapping a new bar of soap wrapped in waxed paper, lovely.
I grew up in an occasional Imperial Leather but mostly Pears house, but they have changed the formulation of Pears and the bars don’t last long nor is the smell the same. My Dad used Imperial Leather or Wright’s Coal Tar soap, hardcore.
Re the Jo Malone vs IL, well JL smells lovelier but it’s £25 a bar, so yes for the bath, no for the washbasin. I buy very spendy bath soaps, but they get used three or four times a day, depending on who is home, whereas the basin soap gets used up really quickly and I’m not spending £25 to £30 a week on soap.

maddiemookins16mum · Yesterday 13:08

Imperial Leather is the best, I’m still wanting a bath on a plane.

FatRosie · Yesterday 13:09

@TheBot , I can only use soap. Most 'liquid soap' or handwash is detergent and gives me contact dermatitis.

@HoskinsChoice , with the dispenser, the pump is touched by dirty hands.
With soap bars the dirt is rinsed away.

@MabelAnderson , Wright’s Coal Tar soap has changed formulation too.

Bar soap is the best. We only have liquid soap in the kitchen. Not sure what I will do when my favourite soap maker retires 😢

Imperial Leather reminds me of my nan (in a good way)

Edited

So do we, it's called washing up liquid and suffices for hands!

Your husband should know that the properly classy 1970s soap was Camay, not Imperial Leather. I used to love those ads with the ladies all covered in foam!

I hated the smell of Camay and Lifebuoy. This was back in days of cold bathrooms with that "bathroom" smell. Palmolive (which reminds me of my granny's posh bathroom - she had a heated towel rail) was the thing.

bovrilormarmite · Yesterday 13:10

I love Imperial Learher. Team DH. Sorry

Balloonhearts · Yesterday 13:11

I like imperial leather. It smells nice. Jo Malone is nice but overpriced.

sanityisamyth · Yesterday 13:13

Bar soap annoys me when it leaves its scummy residue behind. Liquid hand soap is the way forward, especially if there are refills available to cut down on plastic use.

Why can't you have both?

Husband loves IL but we won't buy it as the cat goes mad licking the bath after his shower. Doesn't happen with any other soap.

🤣🤣🤣

Cant decide if the cat has good taste or no taste.
I am wondering now what they put in it

JulietteHasAGun · Yesterday 13:13

We have imperial leather and as a kid I thought it was well posh. Can’t say Ive ever used Jo malone but while I agree something like imperial leather is probably better than a very cheap soap I’m not sure something more expensive than imperial leather is worth it. Ultimately it cleans your hands and suds up well.

I guess people could prefer the scent of Jo malone but I never go round sniffing peoples hands.

Futurehappiness · Yesterday 13:14

I prefer using soap but it has to be the real thing rather than just detergent in a bar. I wouldn't choose to buy anything expensive than Jo Malone though.

For me it is Marseilles soap....or something like Droyts, the eau de cologne soap smells gorgeous and is a delight to use. https://droyt.com/product/droyt-original-glycerine-soap-100g/

Don’t think I have had a bar of soap in my house for decades

Bar soap? That everyone uses? Ugh

Why Ugh? It's better than shower gel!

Theseagullsarenowclouds · Yesterday 13:14

I have my own bar of Pears. The smell reminds me of Karvol.
Imperial leather gives me the creeps.

OtterLovesItsRock · Yesterday 13:15

Can confirm that Imperial Leather smells lickable. #TeamCat

Bar soap? That everyone uses? Ugh

You lather it in your hands not rub it on your genitals, it's fine. And if you are sharing soap you are probably sharing a lot of other germs!

My husband had it when we started going out, I can remember that the sticker on it used to stick to the soap dish and was a bit manky. He had Imperial Leather, Royal Denby crockery and his mum and dad shopped (still do) at Sainsburys.

Wingingit73 · Yesterday 13:15

Imperial leather followed by a Vienetta 😂

Oh no - GERMS! Help, after using bar soap that someone else in my own family has touched 😱🤮 - I would need to scrub myself with Dettol!

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

I assumed that everybody had left their soap bars in the 80s and now used shower gel. And yet everyone here is behaving as if bars of soap are normal, not retro. Mind blown.

Imperial Leather is all right, but if you really want the good stuff, it's Shield

Perfect for the feel of a facelift without the cost.

My mother thought it was the best - apparently if you used Shield on a Sunday, soft & gentle pink was all you needed to get you to next Sunday's bath.
