DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

anotherdaytosmile · 13/06/2026 12:27

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

Exactly what I came here to say! It's in the same category as Old Spice to me. I use Palmolive or Tesco own brand, but I'm tempted by the green Pears. I'll be the only one in the village with that!

Well, I love the smell which is nothing like my old man!

Came here to say this!

Me too but buy from the UK

I love the smell of bar soap but it makes my skin really dry and tight plus trying to clean the soap scum off the basin/shower drives me nuts (hard water area so I assume that's why).

So

  1. What soap doesn't leave your skin feeling dry and tight?
  1. How do you keep the basin/shower/bath clear of soap scum?

A properly made soap won’t dry your skin or leave mushy soap scum. Look at the ingredients.

i buy all my soap and laundry from https://frenchsoaps.co.uk

cant speak more highly of their products.

UnderMirkwood · 15/06/2026 15:01

Well, for those of you worried about old person smell (as if we don't have enough to worry about), there is always this brand:-

Grandpa Stinks - a specialized line of skincare products formulated to break down Nonenal—the chemical compound often responsible for aging-related body odor. As you can tell from the spelling it is an American company.

Lovely 🤦‍♀️

Goodiebagh · 15/06/2026 15:40

Wow ive never seen it so tight!
Imperial leather reminds me of my dad, so I won't hear a bad word about it. And JM soap? Money down the....

MabelAnderson · 15/06/2026 15:47

Ooh I will order some, I wonder if it smells the same.

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

People who want to be properly clean? I never feel clean with just liquid soap or shower gel

MyMilchick · 15/06/2026 16:54

I voted Imperial leather, I also love Carbolic soap :p

you're using it wrong, it's meant to be used for washing. As you've discovered, eating it will make one nauseous.

Don’t be ridiculous

How...by thinking I don't want to 'wash' my hands with the same bar of soap as other people with dirty hands? Uh huh....sounds utterly ridiculous.

Overworkedandknackered · 15/06/2026 17:27

I like the smell of Imperial Leather, I always leave a bar of it in my clothes drawers, I also like the smell of Pears, they both smell of ‘clean’ to me, I can’t stand any overly scented stuff like Jo Malone, it’s overpowering.

TerfOnATrain · 15/06/2026 17:28

MrsShawnHatosy · 14/06/2026 14:35

Please don’t do this. Dog skin and hair is completely different from humans - different ph for a start.

https://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/can-you-use-human-shampoos-on-dogs

The link refers to shampoo, from PetMD, a US veterinary organisation, and we all know US pet and human healthcare industries are financially incentivised. Rituals is body wash.

I will continue to use it on the smelly Labrador who shows no signs of ill health or irritation as a result, just as I will continue to wash in Wrights Coal Tar soap or Dettol soap, as I smell nice after, am thoroughly clean and show no signs of ill health or irritation.

When the Rituals runs out, I will revert back to Fairy washing up liquid which is fantastic for ridding smelly lab of decomposed Pheasant and cow pats.

Rubbing your hands with the soap on it creates a lather that removes dirt and kills bad stuff. That's the point. You're not picking up anything worse by touching the soap than you did by touching the toilet flush or the soap pump that other people use.
Shared hand towels and the door handle on the way out are more gross as you don't wash your hands after you touch them.

Well yes, it is ridiculous to think that bar soap has any more germs than anything else. Soap is self cleaning. Germs dont survive in it in the way that they would on the pump of a hand wash or a toilet flush. You touch things that other people have used all day every day but dont want to use the very thing that will be clean due to the nature of the item.
You are using it to clean your hands. The lather that you make deals with any dirt or nasties on your hands. When you put the soap back down the same lather that is on the soap deals with anything left.

Mumandcarer80 · 15/06/2026 20:38

We never even had Imperial leather it was the cheap stuff from Asda.🤣🤣🤣I prefer Pears soap myself but can’t use it anymore. I hit 40 and it suddenly started making me itch all over again.

SoapCollector · 15/06/2026 21:14

I went shopping in Aldi tonight there was a multi pack of Imperial leather soap bars for £1.99 in the toiletry section if anyone is interested 😁 made me think of this thread!

Gremlins101 · 15/06/2026 22:03

You're both wrong... the correct answer is pears.

PearlyShamps · 16/06/2026 13:46

What has been used up until this point?

noworklifebalance · 16/06/2026 13:53

We have our own soap.
Usually the last part someone washes is their nether regions and the first part the next person washes is their face…

Imperial Leather reminds me of my childhood.
But we are a Pears family.

diddl · 16/06/2026 13:57

But they don't put the bar on their nethers or face?

Can’t speak for them but I don’t. But I the hands go back and forth between the soap and said areas. Anyway, once I got that into my head there was no rationalising away those thoughts.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/06/2026 18:25

I bought my Persimmon Old Person Odour Control Soap.

Three bars were wrapped in tough clear plastic.
Open this , to three boxes (nice, I thought , protects it)
The soap is in a little mesh bag -handy to hang in the shower caddy .
Then you open the bag, the soap itself is in another layer of plastic.
Probably to stop you smelling the damn stuff , after all the effort , I have to use it Hmm
It doesn't smell 'nice' but it works .
Just not environmentally friendly wrapping
