DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

Buy and use the soap you like and let him do the same. Since you're married, you're most likely not eight. "Classy" is a meaningless word in comparative context:it may imply that the soap is somehow intrinsically related to the concept of socio-economic class, but not the specific class it relates to in his mind.

TheyGrewUp · Yesterday 12:41

I don't mind Imperial Leather; or Palmolive. I miss the days when the shelves were sruffed with different soaps: Lux, Camay, Shield and a plethora of supermarket own in colours to match the bathroom!

Treat soap here is good French soap, Marseille or L'Occitane. I don't get the love for Jo Malone.

Whatever the soap, I still like unwrapping a brand new bar.

Agree with you both having your favourote soap.

I hate the smell of soaps. So team handwash for me.

BitDrizzly · Yesterday 12:42

Does he still wear Brut (Old Spice for special occasions) like my dad ? 😆

Your husband should know that the properly classy 1970s soap was Camay, not Imperial Leather. I used to love those ads with the ladies all covered in foam!

When I was little I had to be instructed that there was more to washing one’s face than rubbing lather dreamily into each cheek, because of those ads. 😄

Couldyounot · Yesterday 12:43

Imperial Leather is all right, but if you really want the good stuff, it's Shield

SockPlant · Yesterday 12:43

not sure if it is "classy" but i love the smell of imperial leather and buy it by the 6 pack

For me it was Lux soap.

I remember when me and DP got our first place together (3 years ago so not the olden days) and I put a bar of soap in the bathroom. He looked at me like I'd shit in the bed. He vanished it to the bin and replaced it with hand wash. Fair enough 🤷‍♀️

You're both unreasonable. Who uses bars of soap in the 21st century!?! Makes me feel a bit nauseous. 🤢

Why? Don’t you know how to wash your hands properly?

Yetone · Yesterday 12:45

I don’t like imperial leather or smelly soaps so you are both wrong.
We have different soaps in the bathrooms and a choice of Carex liquid or varying soaps in the downstairs loo.

FloatyFlingo · Yesterday 12:46

Orange Wrights for me today as I’ve ran out of my lovely olive oil soap.

I may go to TK Maxx and treat myself to something else, but Wrights/Pears/Imperial Leather are very clean smelling - and that’s what my objective is.

Ineedanewsofa · Yesterday 12:47

What’s with all the hate for bar soap?! It’s much better for the environment than handwash in plastic bottles and it lasts longer. We are a Pears household, DF loved a bit of IL though…

Shinyandnew1 · Yesterday 12:51

I don’t really like the smell of IL but if he wants to use it, have two soap dishes/bags. We use the Nesti Dante Fig and almond bar soap which smells lush!

MrsSlocombesCat · Yesterday 12:51

I wouldn’t share a bar of soap with anyone.

Not even someone you're intimate with? That seems daft. I remember one bf I had went mad when I used his toothbrush, saying it wasn't hygienic. Even though he'd had his tongue down my throat!

Matsukaze · Yesterday 12:51

gamerchick · Yesterday 12:31

Why can't you have both?

Husband loves IL but we won't buy it as the cat goes mad licking the bath after his shower. Doesn't happen with any other soap.

The cat licks the bath after IL used??

Are we married to the same man ? my husband is exactly the same with imperial leather soap.I have my dove .

PotatoBreadForTheWin · Yesterday 12:52

I love a bar soap too. Not fussy about which but i
am quite partial to the white imperial leather one. IL was my mums soap of choice and definitely a childhood smell for me.

also like pears and soap is one of those random things I always buy on holiday as I love the variety. Never tried a jo malone bar. My favourite for splashing out on deliciously scented and also creamy are the Roger and Gallet ones. Absolutely lovely and sometimes on offer in M&S

People who don't want plastic bottles going to landfill.

Italian Nesti Dante soaps for us. DP has his favourite and I have mine. They're lovely.

Me too! The advert was ridiculous 😂

Imperial Leather is a fine bog standard bar of soap, nothing wrong with it.

I only use bar soap, as I’m allergic to SLS, in the majority of hand washes. It makes my hands break out and bleed 😩

user293948849167 · Yesterday 12:53

Can’t stand the smell of imperial leather actually.
Pears soap though- lovely!
I usually go to tk maxx and stock up on bar soaps

DilkushaKitchen · Yesterday 12:53

Bar soap is the best. We only have liquid soap in the kitchen. Not sure what I will do when my favourite soap maker retires 😢

Imperial Leather reminds me of my nan (in a good way)

MyballsareSandy2015 · Yesterday 12:54

Bars of soap are recommended for smelly people … far more efficient at eliminating body odour than shower gels.
