Should they describe this menu item better

Went to a cafe for the first time it’s not for profit and does stuff for the community. I had been wanting to try it out for a while and finally went to day with my toddler I checked the menu to see if he would eat anything and saw baked beans. I ordered him baked beans on toast with a sausage turns out the beans where homemade and spiced Aibu to think they should state this on the menu as there is a big difference between tinned and home made. I said to the girl behind the counter it was my first time coming she could have said did I know the beans were spiced when ordering for my son. Obviously he refused to eat them.

not linked to my Aibu but my full English came with toast and I got toast for him too. The wait for food was long so they gave me my son’s toast early which I hadn’t asked for. I then didn’t revive my toast with my meal and he then had no toast for his beans. I would have said something but my son was screaming as he was hungry and pushing his pot of beans and spitting them out so I just inhaled mine and left. The person that also works there had gone upstairs and I didn’t want to wait.

Maybe you need to expand the range of food he eats?

He’s 1. It’s not unreasonable that he’s not keen on spicy food

You haven't got a clue what he does/doesn't eat or why. So dont be a judgemental wassack.

Plus, not the point of the thread!

Loving that some people think they've never been served beans from a tin. 🤣🤣🤣

You dont know what all tinned beans taste like at all. Heinz tastes completely different to Branston which tastes completely different to Waitrose which tastes completely different to Asda. And they all taste completely different to bog standard catering vats. I've eaten in B&Bs where they've added some herbs and pepper to the beans to make them look less tinned bean-y but the are still tinned beans.

I have some Bold Beans baked beans in the cupboard. They are just fancy tinned beans (nice though!).

it's perfectly fine for a 1 year old to not have tried or not like spicy food for goodness sake!

Generally baked beans are a fail safe item. And you know what to expect. E.g threads that say ‘my partner got home late and complained we’d already eaten’ the response would be that he/she is capable of baked beans on toast. Or ‘what’s your lazy comfort food?’ A crumpet with Marmite, baked beans & grated cheese’ Everyone knows the baked beans are not something that they’re going to whip up with a jar of cannellini beans,, some smoked garlic a pinch of chilli & a dash of smoked paprika.

😂😂😂

Yeah it’s annoying. Most people wouldn’t think to ask if something described as baked beans on a menu was actually tinned baked beans. They probably thought they were being helpful bringing his toast first but at least he had that to eat.

Lentilcakes · Today 09:32

Knowing what my DS was like at that age - 100% about the beans. He was very specific in his food likes/dislikes and would never have eaten them. He wouldn’t eat pizza with herbs in it so if we went out we had to ask for no herbs (and if we/they forgot we had screaming). I often had to ask for just bread and tinned tuna for him if we went out (rarely did with him). He’s 22 now and eats most things.

It should’ve said ‘homemade spiced beans’. Maybe they’ll change it!

Don’t be ridiculous - a 1 year old has a very different palate to an adult.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Today 09:36

Yes, IMO they should have described them as ‘home made spiced baked beans’, otherwise the vast majority of people would assume Heinz or similar.

Lots of cafes / brunch places do homemade beans these days. They are much nicer and healthier!

Not always nicer.

Why are they healthier?
