Should they describe this menu item better

Went to a cafe for the first time it’s not for profit and does stuff for the community. I had been wanting to try it out for a while and finally went to day with my toddler I checked the menu to see if he would eat anything and saw baked beans. I ordered him baked beans on toast with a sausage turns out the beans where homemade and spiced Aibu to think they should state this on the menu as there is a big difference between tinned and home made. I said to the girl behind the counter it was my first time coming she could have said did I know the beans were spiced when ordering for my son. Obviously he refused to eat them.

not linked to my Aibu but my full English came with toast and I got toast for him too. The wait for food was long so they gave me my son’s toast early which I hadn’t asked for. I then didn’t revive my toast with my meal and he then had no toast for his beans. I would have said something but my son was screaming as he was hungry and pushing his pot of beans and spitting them out so I just inhaled mine and left. The person that also works there had gone upstairs and I didn’t want to wait.

Cafe sounds rubbish. I definitely would mention on the menu that the baked beans are spicy, as no one would reasonably assume that. And even if not on the menu, I’d mention it if you were clearly ordering it for a toddler.

Cafe is also crap to serve beans on toast with the toast separate from the beans. No one wants to eat toast then a bowl of beans separately!

People are really reaching to find a way to blame OP for this, it’s tedious.

YANBU. I would never assume beans on a menu came only from a Heinz tin and that this is the provenance of all beans ever served, but I agree that the menu should've stated that they were spicy. I know adults who struggle with even mild spice who would probably feel duped by that.

Then again I also agree with you based on my own experience, OP. Aged 9 in a catering tent, picking up what was labelled only as a "ham" sandwich on white bread- I was an exceptionally fussy eater and picked it because it appeared to free of all other gubbins so was "safe". Didn't look too closely, took a huge bite because I was hungry and had my head blown off by my first taste of English mustard. No indication it was in there. I know now that they often go together but I didn't as a fussy 9yo - and I wouldn't have picked it if the little card at the front had said "with mustard".

I also loathe oregano. I have got a lot better at asking about it at point of ordering now, but I've sent food back before because it has arrived sprinkled with unadvertised oregano. My response to staff looking irked was always "if you had included this is in the menu description, I'd have asked you to leave it off and we wouldn't be in this situation now".

I'm surprised they didn't say that the beans were home made and spicy. Being home made is a big thing to say in cafes and restaurants. I wouldn't have been pleased to be presented with spicy beans without warning either. Personally I can't deal with too much spice and always check the chilli factor in Chinese and Indian dishes. That doesn't mean it I don't like it, but that I can only deal with so much.
so, in my opinion, YANBU.

Love the post about 'i wouldn't let my child spit food out." How would you stop a 1 year old from doing that 🤣

lashy · 14/06/2026 12:59

You need this book to read to your child when he’s older 😉, and you can have a little chuckle to yourself as you remember this bonkers thread.

First world problems 🙄

I wouldn’t even think to question that. YANBU.

What strange reactions. We're all on here for the same reason. We live in a developed country with the luxury of access to tech that allows us to share gossip and get opinions on trivial matters. Of course they should have told you what they were serving. Of course it's relevant to share if food is spicy. Even more importantly: I would have thought it illegal to sell homemade food without warning people, from a health and safety / hygiene perspective. Food standards etc. And serving beans without the toast?? That's just crappy service. Thanks for the gossip but ultimately, you just need to never go there again and spread the word.

Like 99% of the threads on Mumsnet, or haven't you noticed?

Er. 'Homemade' here doesn't mean 'made in a private house'. It means 'not from a tin/Brakes Bros'. You assume that a cafe/restaurant cooks some things themselves, it doesn't need a special safety warning.

I had a baked egg dish thing with spinach he hates eggs spiced food and eggs is something he hates he had already eaten some toast the cafe only gave us one portion even though I paid for 2 I assumed more toast was coming so we had half each

You OP said you had a full English, this one says you had baked eggs. Which was it, because they are two completely different meals....
