Should they describe this menu item better

Went to a cafe for the first time it’s not for profit and does stuff for the community. I had been wanting to try it out for a while and finally went to day with my toddler I checked the menu to see if he would eat anything and saw baked beans. I ordered him baked beans on toast with a sausage turns out the beans where homemade and spiced Aibu to think they should state this on the menu as there is a big difference between tinned and home made. I said to the girl behind the counter it was my first time coming she could have said did I know the beans were spiced when ordering for my son. Obviously he refused to eat them.

not linked to my Aibu but my full English came with toast and I got toast for him too. The wait for food was long so they gave me my son’s toast early which I hadn’t asked for. I then didn’t revive my toast with my meal and he then had no toast for his beans. I would have said something but my son was screaming as he was hungry and pushing his pot of beans and spitting them out so I just inhaled mine and left. The person that also works there had gone upstairs and I didn’t want to wait.

Just how spicey were the beans? Were they like a chilli or had they just been cooked with a bit of pepper or paprika? I agree with other people that you could have given him something from your plate to go with his sausage and toast, although surely that would be enough to stop most toddlers from being so hungry that they were screaming?

Heinz beans are also spiced.

where do you get your beans from? I've never seen Heinz spicy baked beans, they sound good

also wouldn't assume Heinz, when was the last time you brought a tin? no way can a not for profit afford Heinz in 2026!

It’s weird to assume it would be tinned in a restaurant without checking, baked beans do not exclusively come from a tin.

it was a cafe. not a restaurant.

Sesquioxides · Yesterday 13:41

This thread is batshit! 😆
YANBU OP.

@SleepingStandingUp heinz do actually make several bean flavours, including chilli.

I'm unsure though if this is what the OP was given, or home made beans with maybe paprika in?

I mean it’s not a huge deal but I’ve never ordered just baked beans and not had them come in a tin unless the menu has stated home made beans etc they where spiced who orders baked beans thinking they where spiced especially for a 1 year old. His class over ran so he was starving and crying when he tried the beans I swiftly left and got him a kids sandwich from pret.

he'd had his toast early, and he also had a sausage. if he was still so hungry he was starving I'd question if you'd fed him enough before class? and could you have no just shared food off his plate instead of leaving him screaming whilst you wolfed down a plate of food, left and found a different place to buy other food from?

This would make a great book. Who would you like to play you in the movie? 🙄

Honeyhonay · Yesterday 13:21

No one told OP she could share her food with her son instead of leaving him to scream apparently out of starvation while she gobbled a full fry in front of him.

😂

Wonderlandpeony · Yesterday 13:45

I wouldn't expect baked beans to be spiced, it should have said on the menu.

However I'd probably just suck it up and move on, life's too short.

Hadenough32 · Yesterday 13:45

It's a community cafe so I wouldn't make a huge deal. But yes I'd expect baked beans if I'd ordered beans on toast. I'd assume baked beans is standard as they come with breakfasts and lunches on jacket potatoes etc. If it's not standard baked beans then there should be a description. I'd be surprised if you're the first person this has happened to so wonder why they've not changed it

HobGobblynne · Yesterday 13:46

@holidaybubble you're on a hiding to nothing here. One of the first comments being you should have asked someone to describe the beans before ordering should sum up for you where this will go.

Of course no one (normal) expects kids beans on toast in a café to be anything other than a tin of baked beans. The toast coming separately to the beans when you've ordered 'beans on toast' is beyond weird.

No, it's not lifechanging stuff, but you are perfectly entitled to start a thread about things that aren't life or death. Honestly this forum gets more tiresome by the day.

Overthebow · Yesterday 13:47

Spiced or spicey? I’ve had some lovely homemade beans in cafes before that you could described as spiced but in no way spicy, just beans cooked with homemade tomato sauce and some paprika. I think that’s perfectly acceptable and expected when cafes serve baked beans, I wouldn’t usually expect baked beans to be from a tin and happy when they’re not as less processed. If they were actually spicy then I’d expect the menu to have said.

Normal Heinz beans are spiced (pic may or may not upload...)

I don't think I've ever questioned the provenance of 'beans' on a menu, always assumed Heinz would be forthcoming Grin DP once ordered a sausage bap and received a patty with what was his first experience of sourdough too.....

Have you never seen a sausage mc muffin before?

wrinklycactus · Yesterday 13:48

I don't see why they should state on the menu that beans aren't out of a can.

Not all toddlers children would refuse to eat homemade beans, and the staff can't be expected to know what your child will/ won't eat.

The onus is on you to check that if it's an issue.

With the spice - were they actually spicy hot? Or do you just mean a bit of paprika or mild chilli powder?

If it's actually spicy then the menu should indicate that.

Yeah I think I'm finding this thread so weird because some people seem to use "spiced" when they mean "spiced with chillis". To me it means containing any of the hundreds of spices in the world...

Honeyhonay · Yesterday 13:50

Things the toddler could have eaten off OP’s plate instead of being left to scream from hunger

  • more sausage
  • mushrooms
  • tomato
  • egg
wishingonastar101 · Yesterday 13:51

Why did he need toast for beans he wasn't eating?
I would also not allow my child to spit food out in a restaurant!

Meh it's a community cafe.. maybe a bit annoying but I couldn't be bothered to think deep about it personally

Is the food free then? Never been to one.

ProfessorBinturong · Yesterday 13:53

Again, he's 1! It's instinct to spit out food that tastes 'wrong'. Yes, you train them out of it - but that takes time. You can't expect a 1-year old to politely swallow the first mouthful and then say 'I'm terribly sorry Mama, these aren't to my taste."

Totaldramallama · Yesterday 13:53

I agree with you entirely op. Often DD has been served food, sometimes even from the kids menu, which is really not as described with unnecessary flourish or unexpected ingredients. It is so annoying and it wouldn't be that difficult for staff to note you are ordering for a child and let you know.

HoppingPavlova · Yesterday 13:54

I’ve never been to a restaurant/cafe that served baked beans from a tin😳. If I got that I’d send it back as if I wanted that I’d go buy a tin from the supermarket.

We used to make baked beans when the kids were young, and they ate them. Makes me wonder whether the ones of OP’s were spiced/spiced or just normal food people would give kids?

He needed toast because he was hungry and the main component of his meal was not edible for him

If I had a child who I knew would reject some foods, I would ask the staff to describe the baked beans before ordering them. Onus is on you. They served you beans as described.

The toast coming at the wrong time is unfortunate, but just a typical thing which commonly goes wrong with restaurant service. Not worth a Mumsnet post.

Sorry why on earth would she assume she needed them to describe beans ??? They served spiced beans. If the menu didnt say spiced beans they didnt serve her beans as described at all.

Describe the baked beans.... are you mad?

anyone reading a childss; menu of bean on toast and sausage would not expect anything other than tinned baked beans, white toast and a plain sausage - if no further description was offered.
