Getting rage about this effing weather

MagdelenaMorrison · Today 17:16

I am so angry.
Typing this with yet another torrential rain downpour as we speak. Left my back door open when it was dry clear sky weather and went upstairs to put laundry away, came back down to a black sky, monsoon downpour and a flooded kitchen floor from the rain being blown into my kitchen by howling wind. This is the 4th torrential downpour of the day. All 4 monsoon like.
So far in the SE we have had 10 days straight of torrential rain and battering winds, except for a light reprieve on Sunday but even that was bloody freezing cold. Over the past week I've watched the ferocious hurricane like winds blast all my different roses in full bloom off of their stems, it's snapped all my foxgloves in half, snapped branches off my Budleia, snapped all the stems off of my Salvias, tore my 2 hanging baskets off my wall and landed them across my garden, ruined. I've had my wheelie bins blown from my driveway down the street on their sides, crashing into neighbours' cars. One of our big heavy roof tiles got ripped off by gale force winds on Saturday and landed on our drive and smashed to smithereens, thank God none of us were standing on the drive at the time. I can't hang any washing out cos it won't stop raining.
I put all our coats away during the brief mini heatwave in half term and now we're all wearing them again.
I hate, hate, hate this weather. 10 days of it in June!!!!! Summer!!!!
Just looked at the forecast for tomorrow and it's rain all day again.
I can't cope, it's making me really miserable. Our summers are already short enough as it is, without this.
We didn't even have a warm May (except for the 1 week of half term). 😤

I don’t mind rain. It’s not raining all the time just some of it! I am not on holiday though. At least I can sleep in this weather unlike the heatwave.

I’m cold. The wood burner is lit, I’m wearing four long-sleeved layers, thick socks and wrapped in a blanket.
Even when the sun is out it’s a bitterly cold northerly wind, and the rain is monsoon like.
Flaming June my arse.

Well over fifty years ago my grandfather used to say ‘flaming June’ ‘flaming awful’. Nothing new about this sort of June weather in the UK. Sorry that’s no consolation @MagdelenaMorrisonThe wind is more damaging at this time of year because everything is in full leaf. It is upsetting to see a summer garden ruined.

Can’t OP have a moan about the weather ( let’s face it a national pastime!) without a lecture on climate change?!

I wouldn’t say anyone has lectured. People are just pointing it out because it’s very relevant to what is being discussed! Is no-one supposed to mention it, even when it’s directly relevant to the discussion? Maybe this is how we got into such a mess in the first place- no one talking about it cause it’s such a buzz kill. I mean yeah, it is. And not talking about it isn’t going to make anything better.

Yes it is a buzz kill on a light hearted thread. There’s a difference between not talking about climate change at all and using any opportunity to point it out to people who may well already know.

the80sweregreat · Today 20:15

Uk heat without any kind of air con or anyway of cooling off is awful.

HailinMay · Today 20:17

I agree with you OP. I’ve put a lot of effort into my garden over the last year and while everything is getting well watered I’m fed up with not being able to sit out and admire everything.

Hate to add to the misery but I always think if we’re not seeing settled warm spells by June then it isn’t going to happen at all.

the80sweregreat · Today 20:20

Wimbledon was changed from June to July because it used to rain a lot and they didn’t have a roof on.
June can be unpredictable, what was strange was having such a dry April and May when you usually get the showers.

If it makes you feel better we're on our summer holiday in Wales

Thoughts and prayers ❤️

I'm 10 days into 16 days cycling in Ireland. Every single day has seen battering rain storms and huge winds. I've had hail. I've had cold enough to see my breath (4*c yesterday breakfast....). Cycle touring always has effort, low-points and tiredness, but this is off the scale.
Even the locals and pissed off and hoping for better. Apparently it's been as much rain this last 10 days as they get in a month...
I've decided to change course and head home early on the train...and that's my main holiday gone. :-(

Kudos and commiserations to you from a fellow cyclist. I was battered through a coast to coast several years back but at least that was only 5 days.

Lentilcakes · Today 20:23

going to be really nice next week!
i wore a thick jacket today and i was boiling. As soon as the sun comes out it warns up by 5 degrees!

desperatemum1234 · Today 20:25

I’ve got the heating on. Unfortunately my rage doesn’t keep me warm 😫

Beachtastic · Today 20:27

Ive always loved it even as a child i loved bad weather.
Storms fog frost rain thunder the lot all the weather mumsnet hates i love it.
Rougher the storms the better howling winds bliss.

I'm the same! and having lived in hot/arid countries, I will never take rain for granted again.

the80sweregreat · Today 20:27

It’ll warm up op.
( Then I can go on the thread about how hot it is! )

the80sweregreat · Today 20:28

We need water. People forget this. Farmers needed it back in April and may.

AitkenDrum1970 · Today 20:31

This is the effect of climate change, unfortunately we need to get used to it

Chinesedave · Today 20:32

It is shit because whilst we are never ever assured lovely weather in the spring and summer (and by lovely I just mean warm and settled, not hot), we are ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED shitty weather (cold, wet and windy) in some form from October - April/May (and June apparently) 😭😭😭

Those saying they enjoy this shit are clearly not gardeners as whilst we need some rain occasionally, the wind, rain and hail has just destroyed most of the things I've been looking forward to since last year 😢😢

HoppityBun · Today 20:32

hairbearbunches · Today 17:55

Hate to be that person, but this is climate change and you'd better get used to it because it is only going to get worse. The rain is more intense, the heat is more intense. There is a famous quote by a climate scientist from decades ago - i can't remember his name - and he said 'we are messing with the triggers that cause climate change and the results are likely to be ferocious'.

Buckle up, people. And stay lucky.

James Hansen? I can’t link to the Guardian 2023 article that quoted his updated warning. He said that the world is shifting towards a superheated climate not seen in the past 1m years, prior to human existence, because “we are damned fools” for not acting upon warnings over the climate crisis. He alerted the world to the greenhouse effect in the 1980s.

He was a NASA climate scientist who had warned that the world was moving towards a “new climate frontier” with temperatures higher than at any point over the past million years, bringing impacts such as stronger storms, heatwaves and droughts.

He said the record heatwaves that had roiled the US, China, Europe and elsewhere in 2023 had heightened “a sense of disappointment that we scientists did not communicate more clearly and that we did not elect leaders capable of a more intelligent response”.

“It means we are damned fools,” Hansen said of humanity’s ponderous response to the climate crisis. “We have to taste it to believe it.”

AInightingale · Today 20:32

I was just thinking today that I haven't seen a single butterfly this year. Plenty of bees, they like(d) my salvia most of which has been blasted off the face of the earth like yours OP. And baby bird numbers seem down, I wonder if a lot died of exposure in the nests this year.

Yabu, its fine.

@mumofoneAloneandwell

it’s not. It’s proper shit. Way too much cold, wind and rain for a lot of the country…in June

😄😄 I love the cold weather, and am in recovery from the trauma of the heatwave!

My only gripe is that it will mean we have sun in October! 🥺

On the bright side, I’ve realised there is zero point in spending money on summer clothes.

Waitingfordoggo · Today 20:46

@Sidebeforeself I think it would be really odd if it wasn’t mentioned on a thread about weather! You don’t have to let it spoil your enjoyment of the thread though- just ignore climate-related comments 🤷🏼‍♀️

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Today 20:47

My garden is green and everything is alive and we have a lovely lawn. Ok not 90 degree sun but I’m pleased about that! It will improve!
