What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

Never heard of Betty's.

Half agree on Marks - there are still some foody bits that I love.

Never heard of Betty’s, guess you live in the south then?
As for overrated places, personally, the Cotswolds, just didn’t get the massive hype, nice enough but not what it was made out to be

No, they're not , some may be, many may be but sweeping statement are stupid.

I havent been to Sweeping Statement. Are all the people stupid, or only some of them ?

OneEagerLeader · 11/06/2026 09:46

Glastonbury. The town and the festival.

I lived in London for 15 years . Now I live in the countryside. When you live in real countryside, you start to understand how concrete London actually is, and how polluted and bad for your health it is. The parks are nice, but they aint the countryside..In the end, the concrete was driving me half mad and I ran away screaming.

But why comparing your countryside with a city? If I compare Folkestone with the Sahara yeah the Sahara has more sand and more sun.

London is exceptionally green as a city. I live in Z3, I have parks everywhere, whilst being 20 mins away from Charing Cross.

Starbucks and Costa Coffee crap coffee and shit food, would rather go to an independent cafe but no choice if you're traveling on a motorway.

Costa are really inconsistent. The coffee in the one at my local Tesco extra is consistently good, as is the one in the main mall in my city centre, but at motorway service stations it’s shit more often than not.

Glastonbury. The town and the festival.

I’ve never been to the festival but hated the town. Bloody weird place.

PersephoneParlormaid · 11/06/2026 09:55

Thorntons, Hotel Chocolate

HiZev · 11/06/2026 10:07

I don't like Costa but I don't think it's overrated I thought it was widely understood to be crap coffee. I quite like their cheese toasties.

Blackpool. I love a seaside town but Blackpool is dire.

Is Blackpool overrated? Most people I know hate it (including me).

London is just one great big slab of concrete. European cities are pretty with great food.

What a ridiculous comment. You are entitled to your views about not liking London but to many people it is a great city with great parks, museums, art galleries and food.

For me it is the best city in the world

Go to Venice in winter, we went for a week in January - freezing, blue skies and sunshine, no queues, no cruise ship passengers, absolutely amazing. Creepy as can be at night, it was like being in Don’t Look Now, loved it!

I really liked Venice. You can’t help thinking about Don’t Look Now when you’re there for the first time. 🫣

Lyme Regis is my pet hate. Too many tourists, awful parking and not really anything there. Bridport is much nicer with lots of interesting shops and not far from West Bay.
Bristol isn't that bad - I've never been accosted or assaulted by beggars or druggies and the students are not all public school nor do they bray though they may walk in groups along narrow pavements near the university. They're really nice!
Go to Avebury rather than Stonehenge. And there are plenty of lovely Cotswold villages and towns so you don't have to go to Bourton-on-the Water, which really isn't worth the trouble. I should imagine Jeremy Clarkson's farm shop is also overrated but I've never been there (is it even still going?). Don't know what his pub is like either.

Were you one of the tourists in Lyme Regis.

I think it's architecture is ugly. When you go to some European cities and then go back to London, it's like someone's taken a brick and hit you in the face with it. It's bloody ugly imo and nothing will convince me otherwise. London in a drizzly November twilight made me want to hang myself trom the nearest metal chipped lamppost.

LettuceAndCarrots · 11/06/2026 11:11

As usual I like loads of the things people have listed. Maybe I'm easily pleased!

I like Amorino. The basil and lime sorbet is delicious.

I like Paris and London. So fascinating.

I like Disney - the first time I went I was underwhelmed, but for various reasons I had to go back a few years later and had a fantastic time.

I agree that Nandos is overrated though.

Visit our famous Yorkshire Café Tea Rooms & Shops | Bettys

^Betty's

Don't bother.
Its just basically over-priced tea and scones.
Their scones are big but not particularly better than other cafes.

Wow. It’s one of my happy places.

Nando’s. Dry chicken and chips

Second this. Expensive dry chicken and chips.

Shufflebumnessie · 11/06/2026 12:48

Nandos
Miller & Carter
The Eden Project
The area of/beach at Hythe/Sandgate/Folkestone (I have family that live in Sandgate, a couple of minutes walk from the seafront, and they absolutely can't understand why I don't want to live there too and spend all of my time at the bloody beach!!). I'm sick of hearing how wonderful it is. It's not wonderful, it's a beach full of huge pebbles. There's nothing wonderful about that!!

I love that bit of beach! Go there all the time. Other than holidays when it's boiling hot it's beautifully quiet and lovely. But with nice cafe options too at Loaf/Cafe on the Beach/Waterfront.

Stone beaches are way better than sand ones. Just need a pair of surf shoes for getting in and out of the water and then you have no sandy clothes/towels to contend with. Much more pleasant.

St Paul's is attractive but I think the much praised Georgian stuff looks like slabs of wedding cake gone wrong. Baroque stuff in Europe is so much curlier and prettier. Have you ever been to Spain for example, or pretty little Copenhagen..It makes London look like a giant slab of concrete with weird bits carved out of it by someone who was having an epileptic fit while they qere sculpting it.

Starbucks and Costa Coffee crap coffee and shit food, would rather go to an independent cafe but no choice if you're traveling on a motorway.

Motorway service areas need to be knocked down and replaced with places like Cartgate picnic site on the A303 (though I hear that sadly plans are afoot to replace it with an Extra service area - yuck).

What you need is a cafe, maybe a food shop, somewhere to walk around and enough loos. Lorry drivers need showers. We don't need all the tacky video gaming arcades and mobile phone cover shops.

Lyme Regis is my pet hate. Too many tourists, awful parking and not really anything there. Bridport is much nicer with lots of interesting shops and not far from West Bay

Not a fan of West Bay or Bridport, although the last time I was there it had somewhat less children-unfriendly vibes than it had when we first visited.

Wehaveallgonecrazy · 11/06/2026 15:43

Los Angeles. Like Blackpool, and not in a good way

WW2 and post-war planners might have something to do with that.

Actually one of Dublin's charms is that it has so much Georgian stuff left - it looks like a British city might do if WW2 hadn't happened.

I don't know how much damage CPH received in WW2 (though it was blasted to bits in the early 19th century - by us!)

That's a very weird answer!

Not after you suggested immigrants should "go home".
