What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

Starbucks and Costa Coffee crap coffee and shit food, would rather go to an independent cafe but no choice if you're traveling on a motorway.

CoffeeCantata · 11/06/2026 05:35

I agree about Starbucks and Costa - but I would defend Nero. Their coffee is great and I like the ambience in their cafes.

In theory, yes, independents ought to be best - but I love coffee, and I've had a lot of disappointing cups in independent places too, so it doesn't always follow that independent = better. Sometimes the barista is not well-trained, or has no clue about coffee. I think in Nero they really are professional and often Italian!!!

Go to Venice in winter, we went for a week in January - freezing, blue skies and sunshine, no queues, no cruise ship passengers, absolutely amazing. Creepy as can be at night, it was like being in Don’t Look Now, loved it!

That sounds wonderful! I've only been in high season and it was awful. I nearly wept at the crowds of (not very interested) people shuffling about St Mark's Square. If I'd fallen over, I wouldn't have landed on the ground - there were so many people. Sounds like you had great weather, but since Venice is in the middle of the sea, I know it can be grim in midwinter too - with the high water etc.

I was there with a school group, not by my choice, at that time of year. I hate mass tourism. It should be more difficult to get to places!!! Only those with a genuine interest should go, not everyone off a cruise ship who just doesn't care (Oh - it's Tuesday - it must be Venice).

Call me elitist...I don't care. But mass tourism is destroying the world in so many ways.

Probably the only place on a Merlin Pass I have never been!

I love Warwick castle! The bird show and jousting event are awesome, and my kids watched a stage show of Zog. A bit Disneyfied but one of my favourite days out ever!

Ha ha, growing up in Sussex some years back, Rye and especially Hastings were considered dumps despite their history.

I love Rye AND Hastings 😆

Agreed. I think people go expecting this super hyped up over romanticised place and wind up disappointed. I’m half French, my family really detest Paris in the same way lots of Brits hate London I guess. It is grimy and simply dodgy in parts (Montmartre for example is hideous at night).

Edited

I also love Paris and London! Absolutely amazing cities

Here we go!

So one of the worlds most cosmopolitan, diverse, historic, artistic, cultured cities is overrated?

Edited

People who think London is overrated have generally been to a couple of overpriced tourist attractions and walked along Oxford Street.

FeetupTvon · 11/06/2026 07:01

Centre Parks.

I love London, Paris is ok and I’ve been quite a lot. Krakow is my favourite European city.

Happytaytos · 11/06/2026 07:26

Durdle door.

Full of people and the pictures look better than the reality. Let's not talk about the hill.

It’s so popular because it is the Toby Carvery of steak restaurants. Decent enough steak for the price. Of course there are better high end steakhouses out there but if your budget doesn’t stretch to those and you want a nice steak, it’s a good place to go. Their onion loaf is lovely too. I’ve tried a lot of lower end steakhouses and M&C is the best of them.

I quite like Miller and carter too. It's not a Hawksmoor obviously, but it's 3 courses at £20something it's decent value. Wouldn't pay full price though

Bushmillsbabe · 11/06/2026 07:43

Taj Mahal - travelled all over India and there were several much more impressive but less well known places which are much less crowded.

Marakech - too many sleezy men and overpriced tourist tat

I was extremely underwhelmed by ‘Miller and Carter‘, I have no idea why it’s so popular.

The Toby Carvery of steak restaurants.

Agreed!

It wasn’t over hyped. I just was not expecting a theme park. I was expecting a castle.
I knew some of the history before going. Going around you just had a few very small boards in some rooms with what I would call very minimal detail on them.
And yes, we will have to disagree. I felt it expensive, and designed just to appeal to children. Anyone interested in history would be disappointed.

Sorry, OP said overrated not over hyped.

I can't believe we have such different views, I am VERY interested in history, and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest in fact the opposite, I was expecting to feel disappointed and annoyed and actually I was pleasantly surprised. I grew up just down the road and never went there as a child (maybe once on a school trip?) always avoided the place, we always went to Kenilworth or the countless other historic places in the Midlands.

Such a shame you didn't have the same experience as me. I was there with kids and a bit more focussed on them so perhaps that helped me enjoy it more, to be fair, I imagine it's a bit irritating without kids.

I'll shut up about the place now before I end up ruining it for anyone!

Yes, we will. Last message. You said overhyped. Perhaps it was overhyped for
Not the OP. I was replying to your post.

London is just one great big slab of concrete. European cities are pretty with great food.

London is very green for a capital city it has acres of parklands! It has millions of trees. I live in london and have the largest urban park in Europe 5 minutes walk from my house.

You're just making things up!

I wrote a short sentence "London is over-rated" and you turned that into me not liking London because my kids don't?!?! 🤔

I merely said it was over-rated (as per the thread). e.g. nothing wrong with it, but there are better places to visit. We loved Kew Gardens. The science museum was crowded and difficult to get near anything. The natural history museum was even worse. Everywhere (shops, restaurants, transport) were just so crowded. The London dungeon was great! But the general crowdedness and queues everywhere made the day tiring and meh.

This summer we will visit other UK cities. Any suggestions welcome!

Try York and Glasgow both are fantastic and have so much to see and do. I also love Preston, Lancaster too but it really is only worth a day out for most people not a weekend.
If you have a week to spare then Newcastle all the way up to Edinburgh is the jewel on the crown for me.

Ha, I love a good toilet recommendation.

There must be a market for a toilet guide, similar to the Off the Motorway guide to cheaper fuel, if these still is such a thing with the current state of things. I tend to have a mental list of places to pee in places I regularly visit, at my vast age it's essential!

I lived in London for 15 years . Now I live in the countryside. When you live in real countryside, you start to understand how concrete London actually is, and how polluted and bad for your health it is. The parks are nice, but they aint the countryside..In the end, the concrete was driving me half mad and I ran away screaming.

JudgeJ · 11/06/2026 09:38

Lyme Regis is my pet hate. Too many tourists,
I love the complaints about 'too many tourists'! Here's a good idea to reduce the number, stay at home, that'll be one fewer!

But you compared it not to turn countryside but to other European cities. Which ones are less concrete? There are things wrong with London but lack of green spaces is not one of them it's extremely green.
