What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

Centre Parks, especially in the UK, but then it’s not my idea of a holiday!
Hellmans mayo, it looks vile (why so white?!) and tastes of nothing.
Cadbury’s chocolate.
Most UK beaches.

I've been to Hellman's Mayo. What's it like?

Motorway service areas need to be knocked down and replaced with places like Cartgate picnic site on the A303 (though I hear that sadly plans are afoot to replace it with an Extra service area - yuck).

What you need is a cafe, maybe a food shop, somewhere to walk around and enough loos. Lorry drivers need showers. We don't need all the tacky video gaming arcades and mobile phone cover shops.

Lyme Regis is my pet hate. Too many tourists, awful parking and not really anything there. Bridport is much nicer with lots of interesting shops and not far from West Bay

Not a fan of West Bay or Bridport, although the last time I was there it had somewhat less children-unfriendly vibes than it had when we first visited.

You mean like TBay and Gloucester Services. The Waitrose of motorway services.

No-one suggested they "don't like it" except you.

Can't you see how inflammatory and dangerous this kind of language is at a time when people are literally being burned from their homes?

WW2 and post-war planners might have something to do with that.

Actually one of Dublin's charms is that it has so much Georgian stuff left - it looks like a British city might do if WW2 hadn't happened.

I don't know how much damage CPH received in WW2 (though it was blasted to bits in the early 19th century - by us!)

You might have hit the nail on the head there.

This is literally what the poster said.

I’ve never been to the festival but hated the town. Bloody weird place.

Weird how? Ive never been. What. Spooky and witchy ?

EarlofShrewsbury · 11/06/2026 16:06

I'm going to add the Harry Potter studios tour.

I liked it, don't get me wrong.

But the fact that it cost so much money and you have to book 4 months in advance for a decent time slot is insane.

Franpie · 11/06/2026 16:07

I hate Paris with a passion. I can’t explain why, really. First time I went, my now DH took me there for my 21st and he got terrible gastroenteritis. Being cooped up in a hotel room the size of a postage stamp with someone with gastro isn’t fun. It also pissed it down every day, so maybe that’s why.

I’ve been there many times since, including working there for a few weeks but always hated it. I have declared to DH that I’m never going there again.

Starbucks and Costa Coffee crap coffee and shit food, would rather go to an independent cafe but no choice if you're traveling on a motorway.

Costa is usually crap but in a heatwave it's bliss. Fantastic air-conditioning!

Yes, she did. She didn't say they didn't like it and she certainly didn't suggest that they should "go home if they don't like it."

I'll ask again:

No I can't.

And that's why our nation is in such a problematic state.

Mayflower282 · 11/06/2026 16:16

Disney and universal in Orlando. All the queuing 🤯 and the heat and the cost. Kids hated it, we only lasted 2 hours at each place. Waste of time and money.

Domino's pizza. Overpriced for an unremarkable pizza. And Nando's. Every time I've been there, the service has been crap.

"London" and "basically every restaurant" is a hilarious answer.

It is bizarre how people can write off a whole city and most restaurants!!

Stonehenge- beautiful yes,but you can’t get anywhere near anymore so not worth stopping at.

bournemouth beach- rundown town centre, full of homeless and druggies. if there is a hint of sun that main stretch of beach is jammed wall to wall with bodies.

Absolutely agree, spent my childhood holidays there, 70’s and early 80's. Wouldn't go near the place now, druggies openly using, homeless people begging everywhere (and fighting), town centre is a dive and most shops have shut down since Southampton opened the big shopping centre. Such a shame.

Nowhere beats Edinburgh for Georgian architecture. Bath always brags about that Crescent they have. Edinburgh has miles of it and much nicer.

Lilyhatesjaz · 11/06/2026 18:17

I really enjoyed Warwick castle me DH and adult DS all enjoyed the falconry display and walking around the castle. DS and I are very interested in history DH less so. I thought there was quite a bit of war of the roses information and the models brought it to life it reminded me of the yorvik museum in York we all really enjoyed that too.
Places I don't like include Bournemouth which is very run down and Gloucester which was really rough but I did like the cathedral.

Stonehenge.
There are much, much better stone circles out there, that you can actually walk into and touch.

I'm old, so I can remember when Stonehenge was like that. I wouldn't bother with it now, Avebury is much nicer. I like the Rollright stones, too.
