AIBU to ask how you’d react if you discovered DH was a spy

Let’s say that you discovered your DH was living a lie. His job wasn’t real and was, in fact, a cover story. In reality, he worked for the secret service and was unable to tell anyone, even his spouse. How would you react?

Would the lies be too much, even if there was a valid reason for them?

Would you find it exciting?

Would you end the whole marriage? Conclude that your relationship was built on sand?

I’d fall over laughing because he can’t even find his car keys most days.

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 07/06/2026 23:42

My DH would be the worst spy in the whole country. So I would either die laughing or start tracking his phone

Yeah, or maybe that’s the “routine”.

In True Lies the spy's wife also became a spook and they began working together.

I'd probably think "wow....cool" but then spend the rest of my life worrying about his safety.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 07/06/2026 23:44

Hmm

Depends on the kind of man he is tbh

Who does he spy for? Is he sexy, good in bed, muscly and protective? How did i find out?

Like - is he harming people as a spy? Is he one of those who has a secret wife????

As long as i could still respect and fancy him, I think i'd stay, although the trust would be gone really

PollyBell · 07/06/2026 23:46

He cant find the mayo in the fridge how on earth would he find anything else out?

Spies for the UK.

You saw his licence to kill in his wallet when looking for the Tesco Clubcard.

I’d assume the whole ridiculous story was an attempt to hide an affair.

As above, all part of the act.

Also, spies aren’t trained to look for sauces and other accompaniments.

Fabulous thread

AvacadoChic · 07/06/2026 23:53

I'd say he was a pretty poor spy if he casually kept his 'top secret' identity in his wallet.

But... to play along with your game, I'd find it pretty exciting. After a while, I'd wonder how much of our relationship was him and how much was part of the act, was my whole life a lie?

myrtletrotter · 07/06/2026 23:54

Are you married to Lee Andrews?

LewKirtonHeavenInTheAfternoonNSOul · 07/06/2026 23:54

Introducing himself by surname then first name would be a give away.

Random321 · 07/06/2026 23:56

Not married but I'd laugh.

If he was hired as a spy it would take a max of 3 days before he'd be dropping hints.

He'd be so impressed with himself he wouldn't be able to keep it a secret and both me and his brother would know pretty quickly.

I can even imagine him saying Bond, James Bond or some similar nonsense, and checking himself out in the mirror as if he got more impressive due to being an important spy!

Mumoftwoteenagers · 08/06/2026 00:00

I did maths at Cambridge. The plum job that all of us rather fancied was to become a code breaker at GCHQ.

Those who were recruited had to keep it completely secret and yet we all knew. They would say mysterious things like “when I move to Cheltenham next year….” and then just pause expectantly whilst we figured it out.

I do wonder what Cheltenham is like to live in. Is it full of self satisfied Oxbridge maths graduates pretending to be secretive about it?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 08/06/2026 00:04

I'd love to have had a partner clever enough to pull that off. Both of my exes would struggle to find their way out of a paper bag.

Yes. Pretty much!

aurpod1980 · 08/06/2026 00:05

Last night I caught a taxi home, the guy was Afghani, he spoke 7 languages. His parents live in Russia. He speaks fluent Russian alongside English, Pashto and four other languages. He has siblings in Denmark and the US. He regularly visits Russia, Afghanistan and is going to India. He said can’t get into the US. Anyway… I said mate you could be a spy, he said he’d never work for Britain but he didn’t deny being a spy!

aurpod1980 · 08/06/2026 00:06

Oh his wife is a nurse….

Oh - I so want to go to Cheltenham, drop my Cambridge maths background into conversation (maybe I could wear my
old College scarf and carry a calculator - that wouldn’t make me look a total dickhead right? 😂) and be a bit mysterious about my job. Everyone would think that I am a spy! 😎

Re:- dh - hmmm - we have been together since university and I feel like we know everything about each other. Discovering something new would be terribly exciting and keep us entertained at the dinner table for weeks!
