AIBU to feel deeply unsettled by the Southampton protest scenes?

HopelessPessimist · Yesterday 19:02

Southampton protest against police, huge crowd, Tommy Robinson whipping everyone into a frenzy and saying "this IS about race"

Other speakers declaring that England is a Christian country. The Lords Prayer chanted by every speaker. The leader of UKIP saying he will deport all migrants and make government Christian. The leaders of the protest saying they are being pushed by the police cordon, while the camera angle shows the police haven't moved. The leaders of the protest mocking the female police officer who are taking over a shift from another police officer in the cordon "They're replacing all the men with women!"

This is awful. It feels like the start of civil war. Maybe human beings just aren't supposed to go decades without a fight.

I don’t think anyone disagree that this horrendous case needs investigating and accountability.

But it’s also obvious the far-right will exploit any incident or crime to fuel their fire of hate and division.

I would like to see the crossover of how many of these rioters also think women should be put in their place, that the gays should be rounded up, that the disabled are worthless.

And the acceptance of their hate is seeping into society more and more.

Yes the police need investigating but condoning the mindless violence fuel by prejudice shouldn’t be part of that, or any, process.

Think I’ll start bringing Keir Starmer into everything, despite the thread having nothing to do with him! It’s the same logic you idiots apply when bringing Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage into everything!

No don't forget it's Tommy ten names or calling Robinson Yaxley-Lennon. They've nowhere else to go after that and calling you a thick racist thug. The next general election is going to give them a massive wake up call.

Haha yes it sure is. They think they’re clever pulling the racist cars for everything but it’s been used to much it’s lost all meaning and effectiveness and people are no longer allowing themselves to be silenced

Oh yes, pushing 'leftist ideology' like Shakespeare and Pythagorus.

The only one distinctly 'not getting it' is you.

Again, two things can be true at once. We can notice patterns and trends about how refugees and immigrants value education comparatively to British children whilst also supporting, uplifting and engaging 'working class white British boys'. One doesn't negate the other.

You've made a lot of assumptions and validated them in your head, to push your narrative, without evidence . All the students I teach and in our school are valued and supported in the ways they need. We are always encouraged to reflect and tackle any unconscious biases, regardless of how they fall- it's part of being a lifelong educator. You have no idea because it wouldn't fit your narrative.

In fact, the biggest gap in terms of progress last year (I'm sure you'll be interested to know) wasn't white British 'working class' or disaffected boys but actually girls with SEN (at our school at least). We have been working hard to tackle that disparity.

Keep talking rubbish! I'll keep 'indoctrinating' kids for another 20 years with my 'lefty woke' curriculum (that was determined by a Tory government) ...whilst you keep getting angry and shouting into a void about how biased we all are.

There is a reason why schools are filled with more 'left leaning' politically inclined people, perhaps you should look into that. Although, if you know anything about teaching in schools (which you clearly don't from what you've said) you'd also know that in the classroom we are politically objective.

Every time there are local elections (or a general election) all the children have a mock vote and the manifesto are presented for all the candidates who are taking part in the area and they have their own mini election. We have to present all sides.

We can have our own thoughts and views (which we keep to ourselves) but breaking the impartiality is against the Teaching Standards. Unlike government ministers, we are held to our professional standards quite strictly.

Just out of interest while some teachers like yourself have integrity what happens when some don't and sneaking weave into the narrative their own views which can be done discretely ? How would anyone know ?

Condemn all riots and hate marches or don't condemn them at all. Left or right because a lot if this is very one-sided.

@Dollysleftnip experts disagree if someone says they have been potentially mortally wounded the police has a duty of care to invesgtsuge that and save life. .
There was no need for the handcuffs.

I would also say that the experts in policing just like the experts in medicine and teaching are very good at commenting on what happens on the front line having not been there for 20 odd years themselves
Everything works brilliantly in theory

What the fuck has Tommy Robinson got to do with the murder of Henry Nowak! Yet idiots like you come in threads like this, gaslight people and call them racists then mention To my Robinson!! You’re an absolute disgrace and a joke

Tommy decided he had something to do with the murder of Henry Nowak - he broadcast about racism against white people and called for people to join him at Southampton police station, where he did also go himself.

I've woken up to the news and can't stop crying I'm so upset at what's happening.

To the poster above - this is nothing like Black Lives Matter. That was about racism. This is by racists.

Why isn’t it? Here’s an extract from the London BLM rally on wiki:

Clashes erupted later in the evening as part of the protest group advanced further into central London on their way to Parliament Square. Protesters climbed onto windowsills on the walls of the HM Treasury building, spraying Black Lives Matter graffiti on the Treasury and surrounding buildings. At least 13 people were arrested after violent clashes broke out outside the gates to Downing Street, where tensions boiled over as the crowd had gathered to chant at Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Signs, temporary fencing, and bottles were thrown over the gates, and groups of protesters attempted to breach them.

Sunglade · Today 07:19

People are protesting because a dying innocent civilian was dismissed and left to choke by the police on the risk he'd hurt someone's feelings, and people on this thread are shaking their heads. Do you expect people to just let this slide? Dread to think what the country would look like if everyone did.

Quite unbelievably it's come out that actually the police in that area underwent expensive training in how to treat ethnic minorities differently. So two tier policing is real.

It's been all over the news.

Thanks for clarifying.

I’m sure throwing bins around is really helpful. I can see how that would make a real difference.

The Black Lives Matter protests were by people angry about racism.

These protests in Southampton are by racists angry about non-white people living in this country.

That's the difference.

Really? Then what did graffiti and bottle throwing and being violent do to ‘helpfully protest racism’?

I would never vote for Reform and I think TR is a thug, but I don’t understand why whenever a right wing person protests something it’s ‘agenda’ - they’ve devoted their life to the right wing cause, this sort of even is the reason they believe what they do, so why is it ‘being used’ versus genuine anger even if you personally disagree? It’s not true that only left wing concerns are valid and authentic and everything else is ‘being used for an agenda’

I understand that and it’s a valid point.

However my use of the word weaponising was deliberate. Tommy didn’t go there to protest the police. There are people holding “stop the boats signs”, speeches about “re migration”. Digwa is British.

Yes it's almost as if when swathes of people are outraged, they do angry things?
Nevermind though hey, there's one more useless lump in prison and one less future taxpayer to fund it after this tragedy. Keep it up!

Doesn’t mean everyone who attended the protest is racist though. Again I’m sick of the gaslighting just because people are angry!

LuckyHazelFox · Today 07:26

@socialistmammy You really are part of the problem if you think the BLM riots were a legitimate cause instead of an excuse to loot shops and carry out many acts of violence. All during lockdown of course.

So? Pride had Palestine flags over here. Intersectionality doesn’t just exist on the left.

Concerned (largely male) citizens just making their feelings known by setting stuff on fire and throwing it about, right?

I think both protests were dominated by causeless thugs hell bent on causing trouble but the fact they can’t even admit that ‘cos racism’ is very very telling.

RubyGoose99 · Today 07:27

@Dollysleftnip as an expert, can you explain why, after HN repeatedly says "I've been stabbed" whilst curled up on the floor the officer responds "I don't think you have mate" instead of properly checking him?

Well yes, BLM did this and Starmer took the knee, so…
