AIBU to feel deeply unsettled by the Southampton protest scenes?

HopelessPessimist · Yesterday 19:02

Southampton protest against police, huge crowd, Tommy Robinson whipping everyone into a frenzy and saying "this IS about race"

Other speakers declaring that England is a Christian country. The Lords Prayer chanted by every speaker. The leader of UKIP saying he will deport all migrants and make government Christian. The leaders of the protest saying they are being pushed by the police cordon, while the camera angle shows the police haven't moved. The leaders of the protest mocking the female police officer who are taking over a shift from another police officer in the cordon "They're replacing all the men with women!"

This is awful. It feels like the start of civil war. Maybe human beings just aren't supposed to go decades without a fight.

Civilians will die- it happens in war- just ask Dresden
Israel actually has a low ratio of civillian to military deaths (for wa)r- I simply cannot fathom why people don't think Israel has a right to defend its people and defeat its enemy

Israel’s wars in the Middle East actually have the highest (worst) ratio of civilians to combatants out of all modern post WWII wars in the ME. This is even if you only use the numbers from the IDF.

This has been a very heavy thread, and I've really appreciated all the opinions, it's kept me company while I had my panic. But it's also nice to have a little lightness at the fact that the Scottish/Picts caused the Romans such a headache that the all-conquering empire said "Right, we need some rest and relaxation after that". Proud of my blue painted ancestors there!

Thanks 😊
Blackadder Back & Forth had a hilarious take on this 🤣:

If Dresden had happened post WWII when we had codified war crimes and crimes against humanity like genocide, many scholars have said that Dresden would be a genocide and Churchill a war criminal.

A beautiful young lad with his whole future. No you can't and don't make mistakes at these stakes with the training they should have at that level. They are unfit for the job, should not ever be allowed to police again and should face justice!

I agree the police actions in this case are without doubt deeply unprofessional. The attitude of the PC I picked up on the body cam was
’ I’ve been here and seen this behaviour all before, teenage kid moping around on the floor quite possibly drunk or on drugs claiming some bullshit that’s happened’ this is a classic case of being ‘job blind’ assumptions made as you have witnessed this hundreds of times and which have led to this catastrophic case of negligence at the highest level.

. I also am deeply concerned for my young son growing up in the UK. He was accused, a few days ago, by a young black man, of being a racist as my son would not throw him his ball as we walked past him on our dog walk. I have had some serious words with my son about how he conducts himself and engages with other people who are strangers to him. Ignore Ignore Ignore and move away as you have no idea of others intentions towards you.

Things are getting very ugly all over Britain, it's not very nice is it? It's one cause this week and another next week.

Protests may have to be banned from outside public buildings or on streets and roads. Confine them to a cordoned off area of a park or something. But that wouldn't be enough to work off the anger of rent a crowd would it.

Just fucking racist thugs whipping people up as usual and very isolated. Stupid "civil war" comments. You wish. Mumsnet, please do something about these racist trolls using the boards to spread hatred and misinformation.

CaesarAugusta · Yesterday 23:41

I agree with you all the way, OP. This is exactly what Farage was trying to stir up when he made his portentous "announcement" this morning and he's got his wish several times over. It was a blatantly cynical effort to stir up his more cerebrally challenged supporters, and like obedient little lapdogs they responded to his whistle. He cares not one jot for Henry Nowak.

He must be absolutely delighted, particularly given that it's taken the focus off his financial shenanigans.

Decades without a fight? We had riots in the 00s all over the UK, I grew up in Bradford so remember it well. Also had the riots in 2011 and again in 2024 across the country. It’s nothing new.

I'm ancient, and lived in South London until I was in my mid-30s, so can remember the Brixton riots of 1981 and 1985, and the "Battle of Lewisham" in 1977.

In the '90s I can only remember the "poll tax" riots, but that might have been because I moved to Sussex in '91 and became a country bumpkin.

Farage isn't heard of for months then pops up like a distorted glove puppet when there is so me racist bile to spread. Thought he was off spending his £5m quid "gift".

You're back to reducing the murder of a young boy to monetary terms. Vile.

So a couple of officers make a mistake and 100s of other officers should get attacked and assaulted for it because thats exactly what's going to happen. If one of your colleagues made a mistake would you be OK with 1000s of people to come after you for it

Fucksake, "a mistake"?!

CaesarAugusta · Yesterday 23:49

SpaceRaccoon · Yesterday 23:24

I believe it too. If you look at the amount of infrastructure destruction in Gaza, the preservation of civilian life is impressive. The IDF would pre-warn and clear areas of civilians prior to heavy airstrikes.

Something tells me that the parents and siblings of those dead children, or the children of those dead parents, aren't impressed.

CaesarAugusta · Yesterday 23:55

A mistake? It wasn’t a mistake it was a total fucking failure to carry out good fair policing. Hopefully it will lead to some changes within the police force because they are all so scared of being called racist that they’d rather see a white young man bleeding to death on the floor.

Was it a total failure? Yes, for approximately three minutes they failed to make basic checks on a victim who said he had been stabbed and was clearly in some distress, handcuffed him and treated him like a criminal. That part was indeed an utterly dreadful and tragic failure.

But then there was a swift and thorough investigation leading to the arrest of the perpetrator and other members of the family, and then leading to charges being brought, evidence being carefully prepared to get a conviction, a prosecution being properly pressed forward, and the murderer being convicted and sentenced. I don't think any of that was a "total failure".

Isn’t @DeftGoldHedgehog just talking about Farage’s dodgy bribe and his current job as Mr Social Division Rent-A-Gob? Don’t think she’s mentioned Henry Nowak’s murder?

Sadcat22 · Yesterday 23:57

Ok thank you.
So then the police officers could have been racist then.

You're right. But how does a crowd of yobs taking to the streets shouting their imbeclic mouths off help matters?

Go back to those medieval Christian times, and you will find in many respects they are even worse than the worst Islamic states of today.

Which is hardly surprising given a society "built on" ancient Abrahamic superstition, which is what Christianity essentially is.

The modern West, in contrast, is built on secular democracy, liberal humanism, rational philosophy and science. We have largely managed to push Middle Eastern religion into the realm of "personal belief", and progress in that secular direction can be expected to continue.

We need to be just as wary of those who would re-impose Christianity as we are of those who would impose Islamism - there's little actual difference.

I'm not sure comparing life in medieval times to that in many modern Islamic states is the own you think it is.

If you read the Equality Act, racism can be against other nationalities, including East Europeans. Indeed our Tommy was quite keen on whipping up racism against East Europeans ten years ago, though now he has decided he is on their side.

Ok thank you.
under the equality act the police officers could well have been racist towards him then

Well, at least they didn't torch the place, as happened in many BLM riots in the US.

The last words that young man heard were his rights being read to him. He asked a police officer for help and was called a liar.
He lay there dying.
That is what is deeply unsettling here. I have sons and my heart breaks for Henry and his family.

Rest in Peace Henry Nowak.

This exactly 😢.

It's a shame people are making it about race. The tragedy of this young man losing his life and police being inept at properly assessing and understanding the scene and making assumptions. Poor boy and his family. I think of my son.

There is a pervasive and very nasty narrative that has got a hold in public life.

On a level extremely trivial compared to this murder, but upsetting nonetheless, ds went to a job interview at an arts organisation. At its conclusion, the HR woman said, “Frankly the last person we’re going to employ is a white middle-class male.” Ds, being a nervous nerd, slunk out, but felt gutted, as if he were a criminal.

I don’t hold with any antagonism towards Sikhs (ds’s best friend is a Sikh - they are imo fine people) - the murderer and his family were just evil (and honestly I don’t think really woke people care too much for Sikhs as they’re not victim-y enough or visible) - BUT it’s this general EDI nonsense that has led to the police making a terrible mistake.

A freedom of information request indicated just how many jobs there are in this field and how many millions are spent on what resulted in Henry Nowak’s miserable treatment.

It is horrifying to think of what this poor man went through in his last moments. Regarding your post-your son should have reported her. Or you could? There are so many nasty posts about young white men, and as someone who is the "opposite" of one, it bothers me both because it is unjust and I care about all human beings-but also because SOME young men who are treated like this might then lash out against innocent women.

That might well have been their motivation, rather than favouring the Sikh. I have no idea why they behaved so stupidly.

I feel this country is ravaged by violence, young men and women being stabbed shot beaten up , every day . Why are young people resorting to this ,is it due to the life style, background or lack of discipline. Maybe national service ? Where discipline And respect for others is key.
