AIBU to feel deeply unsettled by the Southampton protest scenes?

1000 replies

HopelessPessimist · Yesterday 19:02

Southampton protest against police, huge crowd, Tommy Robinson whipping everyone into a frenzy and saying "this IS about race"

Other speakers declaring that England is a Christian country. The Lords Prayer chanted by every speaker. The leader of UKIP saying he will deport all migrants and make government Christian. The leaders of the protest saying they are being pushed by the police cordon, while the camera angle shows the police haven't moved. The leaders of the protest mocking the female police officer who are taking over a shift from another police officer in the cordon "They're replacing all the men with women!"

This is awful. It feels like the start of civil war. Maybe human beings just aren't supposed to go decades without a fight.

Stop being disingenuous. The link, if you’ve missed all the tv coverage, newspaper articles and long MN discussion, is that the police, due to DEI and/or fear of racism accusations, failed to act properly.

So it's police being too slow to act ot too quick? Which?

omg now you’re just arguing back for the sake of it! Can’t be arsed with you!

No I’m not. You made an awful comparison and I want to show you why.

How was i dismissing what Henry Nowak went through? And who are the other victims?

All I said it’s not appropriate to compare his murder to antisemitism and I didn’t think it was covered up on purpose, because often with cases, you don’t hear about them until they get to court. That’s it.

You’re like a fly buzzing around manure. The poster you have quoted has nothing to do with antisemitism yet you still bang on about it and then compare what I was talking about (grooming gangs) to antisemitism! You couldn’t make it up!!!

but I’m going to ignore youalright from now on

But if this instance actually leads to stamping out racial bias in how police engage with the public (which black Britons have been calling for for decades) that would be one good thing to come out of this tragedy.

I won't hold my breath.

I've been saying this all day! It's a shame it's taken such a horrific incident to wake folks up to the inequalities in how different groups are policed; and I hope a positive change is about to come.

Not crossing my fingers when Farage and Tommy are the face of change; but hey, I'm open to surprises 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Tommy would be so pleased to hear that

He would point out it was a rational fear. I have a grandson who is, in fact, dual heritage but looks very like his mother. He is the same age as Henry Novak.

Its in record that the abuse is Oldham was covered up by local officials and the police. And ex councillor blew the whistle on this.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was also because police officers were abusing too

Look I’m going to help you because you probably think that you have a clever argument but you really don’t.

Many white British people have been trained to think that being white British is some kind of thing to be ashamed of, that our history is evil, that they have some kind of racist default unless they cede to every belief and demand of non-white groups. We have been trained via educational establishments and the media together with many state and cultural institutions too believe white people are bad. Two tier policing exists, people have been pointing it out for years yet white people have just been shouted down by the white people who have been brainwashed to self flagate over their own race, culture and history.

I couldn't have put it better myself 👏

I wasn’t comparing the grooming gangs scandal to antisemitism. Your and @OneTealShaker’s posts randomly bring in that scandal - without naming it - to talk about cover-ups. Henry Nowak’s murder was not covered up.

I mean, we had everyone from all over the world protest at the British. So why not the British underclass protest also

The marches in support of Gaza are NOT antisemitic. They do attract a lot of antisemites, which is awful, but in themselves they are absolutely not antisemitic.

Really? Have you not read of Jewish people’s lived experience when attempting to go about their normal lives in London during these marches? The verbal abuse, the banners? And you’re contradicting yourself - not anti semitic, but attracting lots of anti semites? So doesn’t that mean that the marches are at least partially antisemitic due to the fact that they feel that the march actually represents them, or they wouldn’t be attending.

Im not a police officer but I would imagine a good 50% of people getting arrested say they can't breath.

A boy lying on the ground, not being aggressive, actually he was submissive, saying he has been stabbed and can't breathe?

Your attempt to play down the situation says something about you and I would question your ability for empathy

They looked for stab wounds and couldn't see any there wasn't a puddle of blood. They called an ambulance for him. It all happened quickly and every piece of information they had been given was wrong

When Henry told them he's been stabbed an officer said "don't think so mate"

Whysnothingsimple · Yesterday 21:38

JHound · Yesterday 21:32

The white police are terrified of being called racist? Even when disproportionately strip searching black and brown children, disproportionately stopping and searching black and brown people are disproportionately releasing to media criminal mugshots of black suspects?

Yeah…the data suggests it’s not so straightforward.

Why disproportionately-are they in proportion to the likely offenders and suspects?

We were talking about the police not doing anything for the victims for fear of being called racist!! Keep up!

Who are these people? Who is training them? You do realise you are mixed race, we all are.

People who live in deprived and built up areas are getting fed up. The people who run the country live in quaint little villages and do not see any problem because it is not happening on their doorstep.

I’ve listened to a Private Eye podcast and a News Agents podcast today. Both stuffed to the gills with media luvvies with luxury beliefs who seem incapable of understanding that people with different lives to them have different views. For so called journalists, it’s baffling.

BeanQuisine · Yesterday 21:39

The leader of UKIP saying he will deport all migrants and make government Christian.

The irony of continuing to impose a Middle Eastern religion - Christianity - on a modern Western nation is completely lost on these cretins.

I’m very aware of the experiences of Jewish people on these marches and how awful they have sometimes been.

And I don’t think I’m contradicting myself at all. What I’m trying to say is that the marches are not intended to be antisemitic. Lots of march attendees are against antisemitism whilst also supporting Gaza. If the marches were really antisemitic, the government would have banned them years ago.

OneTealShaker · Yesterday 21:40

The race baiters and gaslighters are missing the point. Police didn’t believe the white kid on the ground that he had been stabbed and he could breathe and then proceeded to drag him across the drive and arrest him. Despite what they could see.

Yet they believed the Sikh guy that he had experienced racism. Despite having not seen it.

You are obviously too young to remember the Irish Troubles. Plenty of civilian lives both in Ireland and the mainland affected by the bombing campaign. Unfortunately, pre digital age it is a period of history that has been buried. I was at uni in Birmingham in the early 80s, the aftermath of the Birmingham bombings was still echoing loudly. One of our introductions to emergency medicine was a series of candid photos taken in the aftermath and used in training for future mass casualty events. Those images have stayed with me over the years.

I watched the body cam videos on the news this morning in utter horror. I have a 21yr old DS currently at uni in a big city. I definitely worry, particularly when knife crimes are reported. At least those officers will have to live with the consequences of their actions for the rest of their lives. Little comfort for the young man’s family. Any mother who cannot empathise is no mother in my opinion.

Although many of the protesters in Southampton may be jumping on the political bandwagon, there will be a core group that are there out of pure empathy for the young man’s family.

Thank you @Crwysmam.
