AIBU to feel deeply unsettled by the Southampton protest scenes?

1000 replies

HopelessPessimist · Yesterday 19:02

Southampton protest against police, huge crowd, Tommy Robinson whipping everyone into a frenzy and saying "this IS about race"

Other speakers declaring that England is a Christian country. The Lords Prayer chanted by every speaker. The leader of UKIP saying he will deport all migrants and make government Christian. The leaders of the protest saying they are being pushed by the police cordon, while the camera angle shows the police haven't moved. The leaders of the protest mocking the female police officer who are taking over a shift from another police officer in the cordon "They're replacing all the men with women!"

This is awful. It feels like the start of civil war. Maybe human beings just aren't supposed to go decades without a fight.

The police need to make a public apology on behalf of their officers
Everyone in attendance made a complete pig ear of the situation and unless they acknowledge that we won’t move forward

Oh, where will you go instead of forward?

Why would they when it’s one case, not a trend and when in the one case the perpetrator was swiftly dealt with.

Why are you trying to pretend this discussion is about the murder when it is about the behaviour of the police?

bafta16 · Yesterday 21:08

Vickrum thought he could get away with murder by playing race card - and he possibly almost did.

It's not a card. Why do people persist with this? We don't have a Jewish card do we?

Quokkas · Yesterday 21:09

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 21:07

Well I think it is!

Why?

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 21:10

Quokkas · Yesterday 21:09

Why?

Jesus wept. If you are unable to see why then you are part of the problem. Incident within certain communities are being dismissed and downplayed! While others are not!

He certainly did "play the race card" and very successfully so.

Also no need to get petty anti-semitism in. This thread is mad enough as it is.

It doesn’t help, and I don’t support it.

but history shows that when people feel ignored, angry, or believe there’s been a serious injustice, some will inevitably lash out. That’s not a justification, just reality.

The question is why so many people are angry enough to be out there in the first place.

Blatant disregard for bereaved families. Stella. Unemployment. Angry about a variety of other things and decided that today it’s the police in Southampton. Tommy told them to. They’re actually part lemming/sheep.

The reasons are endless.

TrampleOnTheRoses · Yesterday 21:11

JHound · Yesterday 20:56

You mean the white police?

Yes. The white police are treated a white young man as a second class citizen. What are you failing to grasp here? Is it okay for the police to treat white you g men this way?

bafta16 · Yesterday 21:11

Whysnothingsimple · Yesterday 21:06

Do you not agree that the sustained demonisation of young white men (and to a lesser extent women) has caused massive issues in this country?

"sustained demonisation" Where? By Whom?

I doubt it. Don’t judge everyone by your standards.

I hate to break it to you…

I bet the people turning up in balaclavas couldn't even tell you Henry's name just like people rioting after them little girls at the dance studio. If people could protest nicely id support it 100% but smashing up businesses setting fire to police cars and ambulances and attacking emergency workers is what aleays ends up happening

It’s a figure of speech! Nobody has said there is a literal race card ffs

It’s pretty grim to start talking about fragility (presumably you mean white fragility) to parents who are expressing their fears for their own white sons. on a thread about the death of a young white man, fatally stabbed, handcuffed and left to bleed to death by the police because he was white.

It would be if that were true.
(It isn't, no matter how desperately you want it to be, and no matter how often Tommy Robinson tells you it is - deeply and genuinely concerned though I'm sure he is for you )

Sonato · Yesterday 21:12

WaryCrow · Yesterday 19:36

Not again. I just put something on the other thread. There may be questions to answer for the police but they should be questions with attentive listening to the answers, not bloody jumping on bandwagons. Policing is hard, no doubt they hear ‘I’ve been stabbed’ and ‘I can’t breathe’ many times from criminals who are very aware of their rights now.

I’m very unsettled by any lunatic demagogue who tries to drum up mobs.

Im very unsettled in a world where a police officer simultaneously hears a young white boy claim he's been stabbed/cant breathe, also hears an accusation of racism against that same boy, can see no immediate proof of either (yeah right) and blindly automatically assumes the racist accusation is the correct one.

It is disgusting and the participants had every right to march today.

But that's just me

smallglassbottle · Yesterday 21:12

JHound · Yesterday 21:00

You think white officers racially profiled white Novak? Racially profiled as what exactly? I think it’s more likely they racially profiled the Sikh man and decided a “peaceful, law-abiding Sikh man) would never do such a thing.

White people are racially profiled on here all the time, particularly working class ones. They're apparently thick, racist, drunk and lack teeth.

Of course he did, it’s like me stabbing a man to death and saying ‘errrr he sexually assaulted me!’ When he didn’t.. would that be me playing the woman card! Errrr.. yes.

It’s not a “gotcha moment”. It’s a fact.

Tommy Robinson qualifies for Irish citizenship and has freedom of movement across the EU states. He has previously explained to a high court judge that his ‘formal residence’ is Spain.

I was replying to a previous poster who wasn’t sure where his “home” was.

Not sure what the airport in Pakistan you’re referring to has to do with my comment though?

Fair enough I did rush to assume you were going with the; "he lives in Spain, he doesn't even live in the UK" as if it somehow means he doesn't earn the right to be angry about the state of the UK and he's 'just a grifter' accusation they also shout at Kellie-Jay Keen for selling tshirts.

I was countering it with the cheek of public servants also working for Pakistan.

Netcurtainnelly · Yesterday 21:13

How about a protest about all the stabbings in this country. Totally out of control
Your heating about stabbings every week now.
Without another stabbing we wouldn't be where we are tonight?

It's not a card. It is a person's ethnicity and religion. The 2 are one in Sikism and Judaism. It's not a card in your back pocket.

No we don’t, because for years the police, the media our institutions have been ignoring the rise of anti semitism, claiming anti semitism has had zero effect and has largely been ignored or downplayed

How do you help someone you can't get to if they are between a car and a wall

Maybe by not assuming the victim is the perpetrator due to his race

Maybe by not handcuffing him

Maybe by not ignoring the four times Henry said he'd been stabbed

Maybe by noy ignoring the nine times he said he couldn't breathe
