AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Why are you going for so much food that people simply don't like or won't eat (and not just the strawberries)?

So I think OP has been clear on this. At least one of her DC is ND and will eat what they will eat. One guest is on WLI so will probrably eat very little ( I suspect the salmom was bought with this person in mind). So that leaves 6 adults and a child ( who won't eat quiche) so 2 quiches between 6 = 1/3 of a quiche each, pasta salad, potatos 2 ways, greek salad and a green salad. I have said she needs more vegetables perhaps another protien source and definately more berries. Good luck OP I hope you feel better soon.

I’ve enjoyed this thread very much @geminicancerean you are a delight and not insufferable at all. I think you’re very patient and funny and I hope you get well soon.

You definitely did under cater to begin with but you had your DH and half Mumsnet to put you straight. I hope the meal goes off brilliantly.

I hate calculating volume but I can tell a nine inch three layer cake is plenty for 9 people. That said, I also know two quiches are not enough for 9. My in laws cater like this and it’s madness. To be fair though, they also serve big cakes.

I assume none of the guests are veggie?

My DC would have come home starving at those ages. I don't think it's anywhere near enough.

ETA: isn't a 9" cake tin just a standard size?

Edited

No standard is 8"/20cm.

The volume of a 20cm round sandwich tin is 1.4 and the next size up, 23cm (9") is 1.9l - it makes a bigger difference than you think.

When I sold them commercially via cafés, a 23cm 3 layer cake was portioned for 10-12 (depending on the cafe). It's more cake than you'd think, the OP is right on that.

She definitely needs more food otherwise, especially spuds and strawberries. People eat mountains of potato salad at meals like this, and strawberries doubly so. 1kg of spuds between 9 is nowhere near enough.

Exactly. Forget the strawberries and 9 inch cake. Where is the actual food? She needs to buy two chickens and roast them, or burgers or chuck six pizzas in the oven. It’s all picnic food.

Quiche, new potatoes and salad is not picnic food, it’s a perfectly normal balanced meal. An M&S quiche serves 3-4, there was 800g of pasta salad, 1kg of potatoes and a Greek salad. Ample food, especially with strawberry meringues and cake to follow. I’m assuming the people who think there aren’t enough strawberries have the kind of feral children I’ve encountered sometimes who would indeed be allowed to just plough into the strawberries (often involves biting the big ones then discarding). Also shocked at the number of suggestions of drumsticks, which are undoubtedly the absolute worst part of a chicken.

Thanks. I've had my cake tins forever so have no idea how big they are. I just know how much mixture I need to use them.

BeardySchnauzer · Yesterday 10:35

OPs spread contents weren’t a problem - it was really just the quantity

I'm surprised by people who eat so little fruit though! It doesn’t all have to be expensive fruit

namechange62 · Yesterday 10:43

I've nominated for classics..

DeftGoldHedgehog · Yesterday 10:45

Sounds like loads to me. How big are the sausage rolls? Cut them up so there are more if they are a good size! Just put some nice crusty bread and butter out as well.

KoalaBlue1 · Yesterday 10:50

I hope your dinner goes really well. It is a bit stressful.
I looked up Uk weather, and it looks like mid 30’s.
I agree, that is way too hot, coming from an Aussie. Anything over 30 is too hot for me.
Enjoy, and I’m sure your guests will be more than happy.

MaudOHara · Yesterday 10:52

FFS This thread is bloody bonkers.

OP I hope you are feeling better soon, your wit (and maths) are very sharp considering how shitty you are feeling and how much you have been piled upon by MNetters Flowers

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · Yesterday 10:54

@MatriarchCaz i think the salmon issue was flakes.
What do you do with just flakes ?

Hi OP...I truly hope you are feeling better this morning.
Also can I be your friend!!? You are ace..

I don't have anything to add about the food situation because I read the whole thread (insomnia can do one) and think you have it covered.

I'm loving how calm you've stayed even with some of the more bonkers criticisms/suggestions/down right rudeness thrown at you. Are you normally so cool or is it the meds?

If you were my friend you would make me your coconut and mango cake for my birthday wouldn't you? Obviously I would cover the ingredients cost being your friend.

I would like to nominate this thread and the OP for classics.

Probably the meds!!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Yesterday 10:57

If cost isn’t an issue, I’d buy a nice piece of gammon (Waitrose UK origin only, most supermarket gammon is from EU factory farms) bake in advance and slice. Offer chutney and mustard with it.

Any left will keep for days in the fridge - zero waste! Goes perfectly with any salad/potato salad and always a hit.

Ok, so maybe I need an extra quiche and maybe some continental meats? Hummus and veg?

Hummus and veg? I shall never forget this conversation I overheard at the beach.

  • Mum, I am hungry!
  • There is some hummus and veg in the bag, see
  • Mum, I said I am HUNGRY

Cut up sausage rolls? What's next? Pulverise them? To go with the fish flakes?

Satsuma55 · Yesterday 10:59

Cancel the strawberries.

So divide that figure by 9 then… god this is painful.

Actual volume of cake:

V=π(4.5)2(6)V=π(20.25)(6)=121.5πV=π(20.25)(6)=121.5πV≈381.7V≈381

😂😂😂
I think I love you, OP! Your replies have been excellent and that one genuinely just made me laugh out loud.

Hope today goes well. Your cake sounds way too small amazing and are you sure you have enough food for everyone 😉.

Oh and hope whatever illness or ailment is battering you fucks off soon too.

the food sounds lovely and you have made such an effort, I hope you all have a good time, keep cool and hope you feel better soon 🍕🍓🥖🥔🫒

The buffet is off today, my fever has dropped but I’m still very sore and tired.

We’re getting pizza. One 9.5 inch should do everyone, right?

Definitely plenty! Hope you feel better soon, and that you manage to enjoy at least some of the day.

It’s been one of the most batshit threads I have ever seen, and been on here for decades. Maybe the heat is melting brains …

Lizchapman · Yesterday 11:14

I’ve so much enjoyed reading this! Hope you’re feeling better and have a lovely get together with your family 😊

Strawberries here ⬇️ I also have a large punnet of raspberries that I hadn’t earmarked for spread but can obvs include.

There’s also a fucking massive cake (someone has a birthday)

I can a whole one of those by myself in one sitting so no where near enough. Id say 4 of those at least and as everyone else has said you have no where near enough for 9 people. As others have said add some bread/cheese/meats. I would do a second type of pasta salad as not everyone likes pesto, definitely more sausage rolls, get some precooked chicken from your local supermarket and definitely some more kid friendly things.

BinNightTonight · Yesterday 11:18

I think you're fab, OP. But yes, the cake is nowhere near enough, best I take it off your hands...

By the way the last BBQ we went to had the following food - a burger was laid out for each of the kids and every parent dressed them then the kids were sent to play in the end of the garden where there was chopped up fruit and potato wedges for them to help themselves. They had some popcorn later in front of the TV.

@Goditsmemargaret did everyone clap?

Also, no booze, DH is in recovery. You can understand why I didn’t want to reveal that information when I was being piled on last night.

Why would anyone else care about that? In a nice way. Were lots of people asking if your husband should drink?
