AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Ok I will bake some quiches too

I hope they will use eggs from your own chickens and you churned your own butter for the cake otherwise you are just letting yourself down

Bleeding heck.

Now I want devilled eggs and potato salad.

I'm going to have to satisft myself for now with brownies. [beats brownie mixture furiously]

I absolutely hate cheese. Definitely don’t buy cheese.

What time should I arrive?

I am allergic to strawberries but could eat the entire cake.

The food sounds lovely.

Judging by the replies here it is no surprise that WLIs are through the roof; quiche, salmon, pork pies, rotisserie chicken, pasta salad, potatoes, garlic bread and fruit is not enough for the adults? With a giant bloody cake afterwards.

Get a bloody grip on yourselves. This is her family, she knows them and what they eat.

By the way the last BBQ we went to had the following food - a burger was laid out for each of the kids and every parent dressed them then the kids were sent to play in the end of the garden where there was chopped up fruit and potato wedges for them to help themselves. They had some popcorn later in front of the TV.

For the adults chicken wings and one baked potato each was placed on the BBQ. I brought a large and substantial salad, another guest brought a leafy salad. There was loads of fruit. The beer and cocktails flowed. Later on we had tea and coffee with nice chocolate.

Everybody was delighted. There wasn't mountains of food left at the end.

This overfeeding is just weird unless you don't know the guests and their preferences.

And no, absolutely no competitive under eaters - a full plate of food was eaten by everyone.

Alcohol calories
Might as well be ice cream

I'm just depressed because I am newly vegan due to health reasons and now i want cheese, devilled eggs and pork pies.

OP should have put a trigger warning in the title.

[Sad face]

The buffet is off today, my fever has dropped but I’m still very sore and tired.

We’re getting pizza. One 9.5 inch should do everyone, right?

Also, no booze, DH is in recovery. You can understand why I didn’t want to reveal that information when I was being piled on last night.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you recover soon.

Yes that pizza will be fine, everyone will get one inch square which is sufficient if you can supplement with a ball pit of strawberries

Tbh given the weather and people driving it’s wise anyway! Maybe some nice jugs of mocktails? Not alcohol rip off ones - more fruit based

OP,
This is such a funny thread. I love your responses. I hope you have a lovely get-together and that you feel better. I think you should let your guests know about this thread and read out some of the responses. It would make me laugh so much if I was one of your guests.

I'd be adding a couple of large pizzas and some jacket potatoes.

Fluffytoebeanz · Yesterday 09:54

Feel better, and I'd love that cake recipe!

@OtterandaRock

in your opinion… I would rather have a cocktail than an ice cream. As I’m sure many adults would
