AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

I always over cater and there is always loads left over but gets eaten over next few days. I am British but Irish on maternal line I remember from a young child all the female members of the family would be shoving food in peopled faces the minute they entered the home and always loads left over. I now have a sister in law from somewhere in Europe and I cringe on the rare occassion I go to their's hardly anything offered and when it is the amount is pitiful. So embarrassing imo I'd die 😂

So true .
OP is inching out strawberry by strawberry when people are screaming at her to just buy more food . Most people hosting are presenting groaning tables and food in abundance and over catering . OP is opposite .

Exactly. Forget the strawberries and 9 inch cake. Where is the actual food? She needs to buy two chickens and roast them, or burgers or chuck six pizzas in the oven. It’s all picnic food.

Huh ?

Just don’t make them fold the ham to put onto little tiny pieces of bread eh?

The poster who mentioned vegans was making the same point. That "thinking of the vegans" would be as ridiculous as most of the other advice people have given. She literally said that in her second sentence.

So everyone has stopped reading properly now. At least 2 comments that are sarcastically in support of OP have been misread.

Well yes, that was my post too.😂 It’s ok, I don’t read usernames either a lot of the time.

D'oh! Although OP did seem to miss the tone of the original

If I were feeding vegans I would give them vegan food. This thread is batshit.

Would you like me to get you houmous and crudités?

My immediate thought (as a vegan) was that there would be nothing for me IF I was your guest...but I'm not! And as you've pointed out, you know your guests and what they do and don't eat, so it's mad that people are saying 'well I don't like quiche, my children only like quail eggs and caviar, etc'

I hope you're laughing at the batshit responses, not getting stressed 😂

LancashireButterPie · Yesterday 09:05

Good luck today Pi buffet girl.
Hope you are feeling better.

geminicancerean · Yesterday 09:06

Your right, I should absolutely buy more strawberries.

@OtterandaRock I'm about to make some devilled eggs, just after I've finished the peanut butter cookies. But given how this thread is going, I imagine I'm now at risk of lunatic fringes of both nut allergy sufferers and vegans hunting me down and setting fire to my kitchen, whilst other people accuse me of starving people I've never met.

And before someone has a pop, I have clearly stated Not All Vegans / Nut Allergy Suffers, just Lunatic Fringes.

But, hey, this thread...

I would add bake potatoes for everyone

I would add bake potatoes for everyone

I’ll add it to the list:

5 kilos of jersey royals
9 baking potatoes
15 punnets of strawberries.
Houmous for the non existent vegans.
Two whole chickens.
Infinite sausage rolls.

incredible thread. Hope you have a nice day OP!

How are you feeling today OP? Can’t be much fun in this weather being unwell having to host people.

TallagallaPenguin · Yesterday 09:14

Oh OP I’ve just read this thread this morning (only read your posts after a short while). Blimey what a wild pile on!

Agree that your original plan needed a little bit extra and you acknowledged that pretty much straight away. The rest of it is bonkers with people telling you “they wouldn’t eat any of that” when clearly you have a pretty good idea of what your invitees like to eat, telling you that other “boomers” like curry and (lovely, of course, but like you said yours don’t), and suggesting you provide things you’d need to cook, which you’ve specifically said you’re not well enough to do.

And the cake maths 🤣. I think you’ll be fine!

PeachySmile2 · Yesterday 09:19

That’s offensive lol. Would serve 4 adults as a snack

ChangedforObviousReasons2024 · Yesterday 09:21

Op, I would love that tea, a would my family, we do all eat a lot though, so I think you've made good adjustments ..
Just posting to request potato salad recipe & a cake pic - sounds epic!
Hope you feel better soon 💐

DrumsPleaseFab · Yesterday 09:24

Does anyone actually like quiche? I never had a shop bought one that was edible 😅😅😅

@ChangedforObviousReasons2024

do you eat a lot everyday or just when you go to events ?

Goditsmemargaret · Yesterday 09:26

The food sounds lovely.

Judging by the replies here it is no surprise that WLIs are through the roof; quiche, salmon, pork pies, rotisserie chicken, pasta salad, potatoes, garlic bread and fruit is not enough for the adults? With a giant bloody cake afterwards.

Get a bloody grip on yourselves. This is her family, she knows them and what they eat.

By the way the last BBQ we went to had the following food - a burger was laid out for each of the kids and every parent dressed them then the kids were sent to play in the end of the garden where there was chopped up fruit and potato wedges for them to help themselves. They had some popcorn later in front of the TV.

For the adults chicken wings and one baked potato each was placed on the BBQ. I brought a large and substantial salad, another guest brought a leafy salad. There was loads of fruit. The beer and cocktails flowed. Later on we had tea and coffee with nice chocolate.

Everybody was delighted. There wasn't mountains of food left at the end.

This overfeeding is just weird unless you don't know the guests and their preferences.

And no, absolutely no competitive under eaters - a full plate of food was eaten by everyone.

Good job you’re not coming then, isn’t it?

My preference would be to do a lovely big curry for everyone but the boomer contingent won’t eat any of that ‘muck’.

That's really sad. My whole family ages 68 - 14 would all eat a good curry, and we're not remotely posh.
