AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Sounds like my in-laws’ kind of spread. Where everyone leaves hungry and a little underwhelmed needing supper.

Oh OP, I hope your meds have kicked in and you are fast asleep by now... but thanks for the batshit thread 😂

I'm glad you're adding some chicken, it is needed. Grab a bread stick. Grapes. Cheese and crackers.

And maybe rethink the cake... a 9in x 1in rectangular cake is just weird 🤣

It’s a 9” diameter 6”tall circular cake.😂

So many stupid people on this thread 😂

Princessofpumpkins · 25/05/2026 00:46

Could you roast a couple of chickens to slice and maybe some jacket potatoes with coleslaw. The current stuff is not enough

Well yes... I was referencing the mathematician who said the cake will divide into 9 x 1in squares...

ThatLemonBee · 25/05/2026 00:51

That’s not enough food imo , maybe if you add a hot mean like a big lasagna or chilli con carne or something similar

JMSA · 25/05/2026 01:13

Definitely not enough. I don’t even like shop bought quiche.

ThePetiteMermaid · 25/05/2026 01:29

At this rate people are going to be posting suggestions for extra food this time next week.

This thread is one of the craziest I’ve come across on mumsnet and I’ve been here a long time, I can’t work out if some posters have food issues or if it’s the usual thing on here where people are obsessed with “hosting” and being the perfect host so they buy mountains of food.
Either that or a lot of posters on here have very greedy family and friends 😂.

The original suggestions from OP were not that substantial but you’d think she was suggesting locking her guests in a cellar and starving them to death the way people have reacted.

I hope you are feeling better OP.
If you do go ahead tomorrow make sure you make everyone a cake and get them a side of salmon each.
Also a kilo of potatoes and pasta and maybe 20-30 sausage rolls.
You still might have some people feeling peckish afterwards but if you fill a washing up bowl full of strawberries for all your guests then that might help - although you might still have some of the strawberry obsessed kids clawing at you in desperation for more.

I wonder why some people get so riled up by the thought of an undercatered gathering? It makes me think they must have some sort of unresolved trauma from visiting a buffet where they only got one chance to go back for more.

The biggest risk I find when having a
BBQ, buffet or picnic is that one person inevitably turns out to be a greedy guts and goes up first and takes multiple items that were restricted to 1/2 per person.

I still have nightmares about serving 30 mushroom and prawn vol-au-vents for 15 people and big Steve putting 8 on his plate and tucking in.
Sometimes I wake up screaming thinking it’s 2007 and I’m at the local cricket club faced with a sea of disappointed faces and remembering big Steve brushing the pastry from his face with a look of grim satisfaction.

I never served vol-au-vents again as it was just too triggering.

It’s meds time!

I won’t update because it’ll really infuriate a select few people that have replied to me and I will enjoy leaving them with a cliffhanger 🧗

Hope you feel better soon @geminicancerean your spread sounds lovely and with the extras you’re adding in you’ll have plenty, but you know that 😂
I’m sick too and all through reading your replies I was really looking forward to reaching the end and seeing a pic of your spread and delicious cake - and I’ve just realised my days are so wrong!! 😑 I’m Ireland so our bank holiday is next week!!
Even if you don’t update I’ll keep an image of your cake in my head until I can get back in my kitchen and bake myself a 9” square cake with a kilo of strawberries in just for me and hubby to eat 😂😂😂😂😂

Are you invited?

Thanks for the thread OP,
Who would have thought a “What do you think of my buffet” thread could be so entertaining. I have been laughing out loud. Loved your “really a quiche for each adult?”
Hope you feel better soon OP and have a lovely buffet.

Cherrytree86 · 25/05/2026 00:23

1 quiche and 1 pizza and 3 sausage rolls per person and then various other bits and bobs per person should be about right OP

I assume this is a joke. I am howling laughing. (not sarcastic)

ChewbaccasMrs · 25/05/2026 02:37

OP your cake sounds amazing, never had that flavour combo before and bless you making it from scratch and sorting all of the other food whilst being ill.

I think there'll be plenty with the extra bits your buying. Hope you have a lovely day and that your soon feeling better.

I’ve seen this sort of suggestion on Mumsnet before. These dishes don’t really go with this sort of buffet meal. People aren’t sitting down for a proper dinner.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 24/05/2026 23:55

OP: is this enough food to feed 9?
EVERYONE: No, you must buy more! You need bread, meat, cheese! (Def lots of cheese.)
OP: Fuck it! Let them eat (the enormous) cake.

Actually no. @geminicancerean said aaaaggggeeesssss ago she was getting more food. People just enjoyed the pile on without bothering to read her posts where she repeatedly said she was getting more food.

AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?
SaltyandSweet · 25/05/2026 04:35

OP, I am so late to this thread but wanted to hop on to say I think you are witty and I love how you put some of these weirdos in their place! Mumsnet needs more like you to deal with the wanton nastiness which seems to invade every thread these days. Hope you're feeling better!

Cluelessfirstimer · 24/05/2026 22:20

This mase me chuckle. I love it but It bought back memories of my gran who would make multiple quiches every week (we all went over on a Saturday afternoon, about 10 of us)

One afternoon my gramps just snapped and blurted out

"I CANNOT EAT ANOTHER FUCKING QUICHE PLEASE STOP WITH THE QUICHES!"

Haha!!!!

JustABean · 25/05/2026 04:57

All Im going to say is if my mum put this out when we go every other week for a tea we would probably stop going as that probably wouldn't feed half of the 9 lol

chichi2026 · 25/05/2026 05:07

Hello OP. I popped by to make myself feel better (it's actually quite effective!) and my gosh the batshittery is immense - partly by you for missing out the spuds 😂- that was quite a big detail haha.

That is plenty of food and in this heat, people don't want to be eating loads anyway - so unless you're in fucking Lerwick I have no idea why you're getting devoured by these famished people. Probably all hungover and sunburnt and taking their inability to prepare food out on you 😎

Hope everyone has a fab tea tomorrow. As long as you have plenty of ice for drinks (and cake for the kids) nobody will give a solitary fuck, I promise!! x

Yes they do . Chilli goes with anything and only needs rice since op altrsdy has salads . Personally I think the dishes op put are for 4 5 people tops and they must be people who don’t actually eat much . I would never serve that to that many people , and I do host friends very often

OutOfSynnc · 25/05/2026 05:43

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 22:36

I can’t believe I can do this with a fever of 38c and people who don’t still think a nine inch diameter cake only gives people 1 inch cubed volume of cake.

I can't believe it either, you probably belong in bed with a cold pack on your neck. Even for one hour. Can you order a few party size pizzas and few of the other extras you mentioned, and forget baking a second cake?
Hope all goes well and you're betteer soon.

thekindoflovewemake · 25/05/2026 05:47

I feel like it’s all sides and no substance. More protein required- chicken drumsticks or skewers, plus crusty bread.

Just had a thought - I hope it’s not centimetres 😳 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lairymary · 25/05/2026 05:49

Triple the sausage rolls. They are the sort of thing that everyone will want multiples of. Not just the kids! Thank goodness DH mentioned it, otherwise that would have been embarrassing 😳

Yerroblemom1923 · 25/05/2026 05:51

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 18:57

Absolutely, go down Greggs any time and you can see families of three sharing a sausage roll.

I see your point but the guests won't just be eating a whole sausage roll as there is more on offer. If she cuts the sausage rolls up and the quiches too people will only take a piece/slice.

Is this not a bit nuts?! hot weather aside, I genuinely mean this - last weekend I had lunch with family and between 6 of us (adult apetites) we had 2 big quiches, a big bowl of buttered new potatoes, salad, coleslaw and a cooked chicken (we probs only ate half the chicken) and then had a tiramisu and cheese and biscuits for pud. None of us eat like sparrows I assure you. It also wasn't as hot as it is now - so I'm absolutely baffled by this, who the heck has a big apetite when it's so warm! Great British public, guaranteed to be batshit at all times (including me obviously)
