AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Where's the protein?

I'd add some flat breads/tortillas or bread buns, I'd make a big pot of chilli or bolognaise - your DH an make that it's easy - and garlic bread. Tbh you could get frozen pizzas and more garlic bread get them out if people want more, they only take about 15mins from frozen.

You also need fruit

Enjoy

Ok, so maybe I need an extra quiche and maybe some continental meats? Hummus and veg?

Definjfely. Fre ch bread and cheese. Lots more sausage rolls. A large pasta salad and maybe another salad. Sorry. Just not enough.

I mean, it’s a buffet tea but you’d might have to be born into a household where both parents left school at 14 and worked minimum wage jobs all their lives to understand. To my family it’s tea. To my middle class husband it’s ‘spread’ or ‘collation’. It’s quite late on Sunday night to get into socio economic debates and semantics though isn’t it?

Thank god I wasn’t born to child labourers I guess as I can work out and provide a decent dinner/ tea all on my own without an aggressive and defensive MN thread. .

aurpod1980 · 24/05/2026 23:42
  • a baguette and butter
  • hummus/tzatziki with pitta
  • a packet of cooked chicken
  • another box of sausage rolls
  • olives/nuts
  • extra quiche
  • a freezer pizza you can shove in if needed
CinnamonJellyBeans · 24/05/2026 23:46

What about pizza? Any that doesn't get eaten will last for several days as leftovers, so won't be wasted.

fuckingmassivecake · 24/05/2026 23:46

I changed my user name for you OP!
Totally agree with @aurpod1980 except swap the extra quiche for a whole brie to go with the baguette and butter.
Good luck !

Coffeislife · 24/05/2026 23:48

I get you and in these circumstances there will likely be leftovers and the cupboards raided for safety foods🤗

6 hours ago she listed a load of extras she was getting and thanked people for their suggestions. Not surprising she's got a bit defensive when people ignore that and her multiple posts saying she was getting more stuff. Can't see any aggressive posts though. This one is far more aggressive than anything OP.posted.

OP: is this enough food to feed 9?
EVERYONE: No, you must buy more! You need bread, meat, cheese! (Def lots of cheese.)
OP: Fuck it! Let them eat (the enormous) cake.

I bake, it’s my thing.

If you bake, and you usually make your own mayo, why are you going to so little effort and underplaying this particular shindig? I would never make mayo, but I’d go to way more effort than this. If the boomers won’t eat curry, how about a BBQ? This is the sort of thing I would grab from M&S for my family of four if we were to head out for a picnic. A nine inch cake will not serve 16. It will do 8. Buy three more of those punnets of strawberries, do you mean those small quiches, which are about the size of my hand? Buy six of those. There’s just not substantial food. It’s all just snacks. Buy some chicken drumsticks, do some ham rolls, egg sandwiches.

Bravemama · 25/05/2026 00:00

I'd be tempted to quickly boil up some baby potatoes and make a nice garlic butter to go with.

If in doubt, French bread goes with everything 😉

ConstantlyFuriosa · 25/05/2026 00:05

Yeah, I know. I just wanted to say “let them eat cake’. I think the OP has taken onboard what everyone is saying except she isn’t buying any cheese!

/faints

wandawaves · 25/05/2026 00:05

Oh OP, I hope your meds have kicked in and you are fast asleep by now... but thanks for the batshit thread 😂

I'm glad you're adding some chicken, it is needed. Grab a bread stick. Grapes. Cheese and crackers.

And maybe rethink the cake... a 9in x 1in rectangular cake is just weird 🤣

samthepigeon · 25/05/2026 00:07

Hi OP, I think your tea sounds great. Homemade potato salad on steroids, lots of green salad, other bits to add to it, fruit and a gorgeous cake! As veggies, we manage on such things with no meat involved. I hope you feel better soon, and that your sister loves her cake.

... I can't decide if you're being serious, or is this sarcasm?

LBFseBrom · 25/05/2026 00:08

French bread/baguettes, butter, plenty of cheese.

ToffeePennie · 25/05/2026 00:11

I usually bake 2 9inch cakes for parties,
OP.
It’s usually 16 eggs to 32 oz butter,
flour and sugar round here. Typically one flavoured with vanilla and fresh fruit (tropical fruit coulis and vanilla bean crème pat filling) and one with chocolate, caramel and chocolate ganache.
I would deffo say you are doing the right thing sending hubby to grab more bits. I would suggest carbs and protein with what you already have - maybe a nice baguette and some deli meats or a pre roasted chicken (Tescos or Morrisons do good ones). It sounds like you have a similar family to me who won’t even eat pizza as “it’s foreign muck!” Drives me scatty, I have to make cottage pie or a roast every time they come round because they refuse anything else. And salads are poison and not enough food!
I sympathise!!!

Cherrytree86 · 25/05/2026 00:23

1 quiche and 1 pizza and 3 sausage rolls per person and then various other bits and bobs per person should be about right OP

Your guests eat a quarter of a cake each?

Besidemyselfwithworry · 25/05/2026 00:25

FourEyesGood · 24/05/2026 17:09

You need about 50% more stuff, I reckon.

God I’d say double that!!
nobody wants hungry guests!!!!

Remindmeofthebabee · 25/05/2026 00:26

I’d also add a big bag of those little bake at home baguettes, hummus, one of those dip trays, rotisserie chicken, boiled eggs and cous cous as well as your potato salad.

Otherwise they will all be sloping off early to McDonald’s , OP. You need to really fill them up

ReadingSoManyThreads · 25/05/2026 00:34

Professional baker here @geminicancerean - you do not need to bake another cake. People are being ridiculous, a 9" triple layer cake is enough for 9 people.
