AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Good that you have decided to supplement the savoury food. I would just put some
chicken breasts in the oven for 20 mins or so, with salt and pepper and olive oil.

I bake a lot. A nine inch cake with tiers is enough. And I am an over-caterer. The tiers and icing etc make the cake much bigger. I regularly make this size cake for us, my sibling’s family and my parents. There are ten of us, all adult big eaters, and there is cake left over. And this is for afternoon tea, never mind after dinner. No more cake is needed here.

@geminicancerean You appear to have the patience of a saint. Bravo.

I was going to ask if you'd consider posting a before and after photo of the spread, as I feel this epic thread needs that kind of closure, maybe including a tape measure to provide scale against the effing enormous cake. And then I saw you'd already said you'd do that. Awesome.

Your original quantities (including the potato salad and effing enormous cake) sound pretty OK to me for feeding people one of three meals a day and given the further context about them, but I guess a lot of people expect huge quantities of food, with the associated food waste, at any type of gathering.

I hope you get well soon.

Yes they do . Chilli goes with anything and only needs rice since op altrsdy has salads . Personally I think the dishes op put are for 4 5 people tops and they must be people who don’t actually eat much . I would never serve that to that many people , and I do host friends very often

Chilli with a side of salmon?
Chilli with a side of sausage roll?

Is this not a bit nuts?! hot weather aside, I genuinely mean this - last weekend I had lunch with family and between 6 of us (adult apetites) we had 2 big quiches, a big bowl of buttered new potatoes, salad, coleslaw and a cooked chicken (we probs only ate half the chicken) and then had a tiramisu and cheese and biscuits for pud. None of us eat like sparrows I assure you. It also wasn't as hot as it is now - so I'm absolutely baffled by this, who the heck has a big apetite when it's so warm! Great British public, guaranteed to be batshit at all times (including me obviously)

sorry @Lairymary I didn't mean to quote you and when I tried to go back and edit I ballsed it up! sorry, epic fail x 2 😁

Chilli with a side of salmon?
Chilli with a side of sausage roll?

are you trying to suggest that us Brits are sophisticated in our food combinations? 🙂

hattie43 · 25/05/2026 06:13

Not nearly enough for 9 people . I’d double that at least . You don’t mention drinks but don’t scrimp there either particularly as it’s so hot .

Strawberries86 · 25/05/2026 06:13

With the chicken and and bread I think your dinner sounds delicious OP. I don’t understand the nastiness on this thread.

ClearFruit · 25/05/2026 06:14

Jesus Christ. Buy the same again twice. Why so stingy?

The what now? How is it stingy?! I'm so confused. Even if it wasn't scorchio, why isn't that enough food for one meal?! I'm a greedy bastard asking this, genuinely interested!! 😃

This is one of the most frustrating threads I’ve read on here. Just buy more bloody food.

So true .
OP is inching out strawberry by strawberry when people are screaming at her to just buy more food . Most people hosting are presenting groaning tables and food in abundance and over catering . OP is opposite .

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:17

Those tend to be small bags, so I’m guessing that will also be a small potato salad. But potato salad is a side, not the main course.

i ate basically a whole bag by myself last weekend - l love a Jersey Royal

The OP has said multiple times that she’s going to buy more food! What more do people want? A shopping receipt proving she’s done so?

Batshit. People want her to have leftovers, so they can be pious about how she uses them 😂

God forbid people don't over cater. Good grief.

Brideofclover · 25/05/2026 05:49

Just had a thought - I hope it’s not centimetres 😳 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Why would it be centimeters when both the OPs post about the cake, and the one you've quoted, say inches?

ToffeeCrabApple · 25/05/2026 06:48

People overeat at this sort of thing as its yummy food. Forget that your kids is picky and assume you are feeding 9 big blokes, then add a bit.

Its better to have leftovers than to run out

You can't offer up less sausage rolls than there are guests.

Bjorkdidit · 25/05/2026 06:50

Also 9 centimetres would be a muffin not a cake.

Let's hope the OP has a great gathering and comes back to say there was plenty of food and a manageable amount of leftovers before the thread fills up with rubbish from people who haven't bothered to read all her posts.

Why work on feeding '9 big blokes' and then some, when its not them who's coming? I get that you don’t want to run out but there's no sense in making 3 or 4 times more food than what is plenty, especially when its so hot and will likely struggle to keep it safe to eat.

Clearly because the thread is too long to read all of it .

NameChangeAgain48 · 25/05/2026 07:01

My additions would be 2 cooke chickens, make a big coleslaw (with the ready shredded stuff in a bag. A few baguettes, carrot stick, cucumber, cut cooked meats, crackers and dip. If you have room in your freezer you could get ice-cream and/ or a selection of ice hollies. You don't need more cake but something cold would be nice. Id also get those metal trays and stack two on top of the other. Id put put freezer blocks in the bottom ones or a thin layer of ice and food in the top ones to try and keep things cool.

There’s this really cool functionality on here where you can ‘read all posts by the OP’. Really helpful on a long thread.
It amuses me that people come on to a thread like this that is 100s of posts long and think ‘ooh, I bet no one else has suggested buying more food yet’ 😁

But you don't need to read it all, just click on the 'all' filter to just see the OPs posts.

Fuck knows why anyone would comment without doing that on a long thread.

The funny thing is that on threads about food waste on here everyone is adamant that they have zero waste, they only ever buy exactly what they need etc. I know people are going on about eating leftovers but who really wants to eat buffet food that’s been out in this heat the next day?

Princessfluffy · 25/05/2026 07:10

That’s 15-25 strawberries in a 650g pack. So two each. I think you need 5 packs plus some cream!

iamnotalemon · 25/05/2026 07:11

If you’ve been unwell and DH is critical that it won’t be enough, send him to the shops to deal with the rest. Why couldn’t he have dealt with it in the first place!
