AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

OP.
I love you and your maths calculations.
You sound as neurodiverse as your DC, your Dad and my whole family (including me) are.
Forget the bloody buffet and focus on getting yourself well. Your temp obviously isn't responding to the antibiotics if it's still high.

I only started them this afternoon - give them a bit longer I think

Currently feasting on Greek yoghurt with honey and tepid orange squash. I can take more drugs in twenty minutes. 🙌🙌

Re the cake feeding 9 people. The circumference of a 9" cake is just over 28". If evenly cut, discounting the three kids would probably eat less, that would give people a wedge just over 3", which is a pretty decent chunk of cake. Even moreso when it's 3 layers high, which @geminicancerean says is about 6".

For the person suggesting a 9" square cake gives 9 people a 1" square, no. It would give 9 people a 3" x 3" square.

Yeah of course but same sentiment applies. Your health comes first. Id be on the phone telling people to bring a dish. That way if there's not enough food it's their own fault.

Innit! This thread has kept me awake until meds time so there’s that small mercy.

OP, I've only read your messages. You've made me laugh!

I know you've already changed your list - when I read your first post, I thought you might need a big bowl of bread rolls and maybe do a bag of pasta plus pesto - quick to do, and much cheaper than buying more pasta & pesto ready-made from M&S.

The cake sounds delicious. You're very good to be hosting when feeling so unwell. I hope you feel better soon and that you have a lovely family tea.

We may move it to Tues. Going to see how I go. Luckily everybody is staying in different accommodation so I don’t have to host 24/7.

Do your children regularly eat 300g of strawberries each then? I bet they’re regular!

.....and you're wondering why people think you're defensive.

You’ve got fourteen minutes to fire more inane questions at me before I go get slushy.

One of the adults is on Mounjaro btw, hence salads and salmon etc. But you’re right, they should be eating pork pies too. Also a metric tonne of cake.

Blimey @geminicancerean I think this must be the thread of the day. It's odd as usually you'd have 600+ posters telling you cake AND strawberries was pure greed. Anyway, glad your H is getting more food, but to be honest, you don't sound well at all - I wish you'd posted "shall I cancel this?" - it sound like a lot of effort. Yes I would have put out more food and clearly now you will, but isn't the issue that you weren't really well enough to this in the first place? Not to mention having to reply to this all evening!

Coffeislife · 24/05/2026 23:23

Of i took my 3 nd children they would enjoy eating any stray cardboard,, the edible things would do hubby and I + 2 nd.😊

I would get three quiches, not two, between nine people. Or simply ask DH what else he would like. I’m guessing he feels this will be a little light for the male contingent?

My DH doesn’t eat quiche or salmon so we’d need some cold meats / pies - but that’s just him!

I mean, it’s a buffet tea but you’d might have to be born into a household where both parents left school at 14 and worked minimum wage jobs all their lives to understand. To my family it’s tea. To my middle class husband it’s ‘spread’ or ‘collation’. It’s quite late on Sunday night to get into socio economic debates and semantics though isn’t it?
