AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

I think we can all agree that an enormous cake would be able to feed 81 people more than a square inch each

So divide that figure by 9 then… god this is painful.

Actual volume of cake:

V=π(4.5)2(6)V=π(20.25)(6)=121.5πV=π(20.25)(6)=121.5πV≈381.7V≈381

Guys, never go into business selling cakes - you’d be bankrupt in days

I can’t believe I can do this with a fever of 38c and people who don’t still think a nine inch diameter cake only gives people 1 inch cubed volume of cake.

Anyway, we might have the cake on Tuesday and just order pizza or something tomorrow as I feel like shit but I will do before and after pics, with objects for scale and a ruler.

I said 1inch squares of cake (not cubes). You did say there was several layers!

I can’t actually tell if you’re being serious or not 😬.
It’s a big cake. Too big for 9 people to eat in one sitting.

But I’m not feeding 81 people

Neurowonky? Nice

Add in the usual boomer snide (which still, sadly, seems an acceptable slur on here).

My GCSE Maths B grade isn’t looking so disappointing from where I’m sitting (laying) today.

Obviously the OP is insufferable, but why are people pretending she needs a cake so huge that everyone is full from cake? When the cake comes after dinner? The slice she serves can’t really be compared to the slice of cake one has with coffee on a day out or whatever, as usually not much else is consumed then.

Anonymouse27 · 24/05/2026 22:47

This thread is very entertaining. It sounds like OP doesn't need to worry about the rest of the food as everyone can fill up on cake :-)

I mean, I’ve said several times ‘right, we are buying more stuff tomorrow’ but I cannot be bothered to do it any more.

Will add ‘insufferable’ to my bank of Mumsnet insults that I keep ready for my DH to have written on my grave. That’s going at the top.

Do people really eat a massive curry on a BH monday in May when its going to be 30degrees??

This thread is madness, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

OP i am fully invested and would love to see the cake, it sounds amazing.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 22:51

Also having ‘will use foul language for maximum effect’ on there. Just above ‘neurowonky’.

Yeah it’s mad isn’t it. I knew people would give it to me both barrels. But to be accused of lying and being tight and being insufferable. Well ok. But the cake is for my sibling who’s had a fucking hard year and it’s their favourite flavours. I adapted a recipe especially for them. I calculated enough volume for them to take the rest home when they leave. But yeah, I’m insufferable.

She isn't insufferable in the least. Unwilling to suffer fools herself maybe but if I said about 30 times I would buy more food then had 200 more people come on to go "ha ha she's crazy can't believe she's not going to buy more food" I'd be pretty short with people too.

P.S. that's a big cake and more than big enough for the number of people.

OP.
I love you and your maths calculations.
You sound as neurodiverse as your DC, your Dad and my whole family (including me) are.
Forget the bloody buffet and focus on getting yourself well. Your temp obviously isn't responding to the antibiotics if it's still high.
