AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

I know everyone is saying not enough sausage rolls/quiche/cake etc but not ALL 9 people are going to want a whole sausage roll or a slice of quiche or salmon or cake etc etc

Could always buy a cooked chicken and chop that up

Aussie here, how hot is really hot? 😎

Not hot by Aussie standards 😂

I agree. People tend to be mindful of allowing enough food for others/letting the kids go first etc and will probably take less than you think. They know they can go back for seconds if any leftover.
I think it's plenty. Maybe some French bread but otherwise it'll be enough. It'll be another hot day tomorrow so they probably won't want to eat much. Make sure you've got plenty of drinks! Oh and maybe bowls of crisps.

Why would you let kids go first? Adults choose what they would like - then the kids get to choose.

Not all people will want a whole sausages roll 😂😂😂😂

They don’t have much choice though because there’s little else on offer!

Of course she is. She wants opinions but then she is very defensive and is using foul language for maximum effect.

that description of me is accurate, you are bang on

I always assume everyone will have a portion of everything and then add a bit in case a few want more than one portion. That works pretty well - I usually have a few leftovers but that's the aim. If it all goes, you won't know if they had enough to eat! You can eat up the leftovers the next day.

Teanbiscuits33 · 24/05/2026 17:50

OP, people eat 200-250g of pasta as single portion for lunch, so 800g is enough for 4 at most. Most people will want pasta at a buffet. That’s nowhere near enough you need a few big bowls of pasta.

Edited

No wonder there's an obesity problem in this country. A portion of pasta is roughly 75g. The OP isn't just serving pasta there will be other food as well.

Tink3rbell30 · 24/05/2026 18:00

Absolutely fine. Not everyone rams big portions down their necks plus it'll be absolutely boiling anyway. If you're unsure just whack a pizza in to bulk it up and buy another packet of sausage rolls.

You don't come to my family gatherings!

Kittybway · 24/05/2026 18:01

I agree if you get some nice bread/cheese and pork pies you'll be grand. Sounds like a great spread and its making me hungry.

What flavour is the cake?

NeedSleepNow · 24/05/2026 18:01

I'd add some nice fresh bread and butter, hummus, some ham or chicken, maybe something like some cous cous. You definitely need enough sausage rolls for one each!

75g of uncooked pasta....

Wishimaywishimight · 24/05/2026 18:01

What if everyone fancies a sausage roll? People will look at the amount and be nervous to take one because they will know not everyone can have one.

Sorry OP, but it's all just too small. Stop adding in bits of things and re-look at the whole 'menu'. Honestly, people will leave hungry!

HedgehogsOnTheWall · 24/05/2026 17:54

You made a cake while on antibiotics and opiates?

Baked and stored last week. This is my job, I can do it with my eyes shut but I prepped way in advance because I know how to keep cake fresh and didn’t want to have my oven running that long in a heat wave. But thanks for trying to catch me out, that was really kind of you.

Glad your DH is going to get more food.

Reminds me of a family member who prides themselves on whipping up an 'enormous feast'. Over the years, guests have learned to eat beforehand as the portions are so mediocre they'd always leave starving. The reason there are leftovers now is because everyone has had their fill beforehand

Teanbiscuits33 · 24/05/2026 18:02

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:57

Guys do any of you bake? The cake is not small.

Well, you came on here asking for other opinions because you said your husband also thinks you’re under catering and presumably your husband has seen the cake?

You need to increase your savoury offerings. I understand why you’re defensive about it because you probably feel bad that people are saying you’re being stingey and maybe you can’t afford more or want to prove a point, but why ask if you’re not willing to listen? That’s what’s making me think you’re on a wind up.

Isn’t that 75g dry pasta though?

I think most people would want a sausage roll tbh, and kids may want more than one if that’s the main food aimed at them. I don’t think you need more potatoes though, a potato salad, potatoes in butter and pasta salad should be fine for 6 adults. The thing with a buffet is everyone tends to want a bit of everything, and sausage rolls tend to be more in demand than quiche so I’d adjust accordingly. Lots of sausage rolls and cocktail sausages.

Deadleaves77 · 24/05/2026 18:04

BeardySchnauzer · 24/05/2026 18:03

Yes. 200g of cooked pasta is about 50/60g of dry pasta i.e under the serving this poster is suggesting 😂

Viviennemary · 24/05/2026 18:04

Nowhere near enough. More food needed. Six sausage rolls for 9 people. You need to rethink this.

DidILeaveTheGasOn · 24/05/2026 18:04

Op, why won't you buy cheese and bread? Please, don't post this and leave us like this. Have you forgotten what a plate of food looks like? Are you anti-cheese? (Surely no one is anti-cheese).
This thread is making me hungry and disappointed in equal measure.
