AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

So what will the kids eat? Greek salad?

Why not chuck some marinated chicken wings and chicken drumsticks in the oven or airfryer?

Easy to do and everyone likes chicken.

NeedSleepNow · 24/05/2026 18:01

I'd add some nice fresh bread and butter, hummus, some ham or chicken, maybe something like some cous cous. You definitely need enough sausage rolls for one each!

Deffo, DH is going to be schlepping out in the heat for provisions tomorrow!

op, if you don’t wish to or can’t do this, why not text them all and tell them dinner is off and you’re only doing a few snarky bits?

yoire not explaining your reticence here, did you not invite them? A couple of flat breads isn’t going to work.

if you need cheap buy some chicken thighs and bread, for about 15 quid more you could have it sorted.

or text them and tell them dinner is off. And it’s just snacks as that’s what this is.

Sorry, very little to add to the general convo, but surely I can't be the only one to snigger at 'snarky bits'?

(OP you don't mention cheese and pineapple on sticks. It's not a party or gathering without those)

Good job you’re not coming then, isn’t it?

My preference would be to do a lovely big curry for everyone but the boomer contingent won’t eat any of that ‘muck’.

I’m a ‘Boomer’ literally eating a curry right now 🙃

NewDogOwner · 24/05/2026 18:06

2 quiches for 9 people? Hell no.

Greensinkingrings · 24/05/2026 18:07

I would add potato salad and bread TBH. Probably more sausage rolls and quiches and at least double if not triple the strawberries.

No wonder there's an obesity problem in this country. A portion of pasta is roughly 75g. The OP isn't just serving pasta there will be other food as well.

Well it’s never good to hurl abuse and get it wrong now is it. 😂

How much alcohol have bought or are people bringing their own?

Don’t open that can of worms! We’ve already got a week old tiny cake….which apparently is enormous?

MayasJamas · 24/05/2026 18:07

If your husband thinks it is not enough, and you have been unwell, then he can pop back to M&S and get a few more items. Since he’s an adult, he can choose and buy these items all by himself. No more work needed from you. Hurrah!

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 18:08

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:58

Christ 8ts even smaller than you said, it’s 5 inches tall 😂

Yes I baked that image of the cake that I posted for illustrative reasons. You’re right, people won’t want to eat it at all, what with it being pixelated and everything.
My actual cake is 6 inches (while erect)

I know everyone is saying not enough sausage rolls/quiche/cake etc but not ALL 9 people are going to want a whole sausage roll or a slice of quiche or salmon or cake etc etc

I’d be wanting two sausage rolls thank you very much 😂

Bluehouse14 · 24/05/2026 18:08

Oh gosh definitely not enough. This would be enough for maybe 3.5 adults. Id buy at least 3 more quiches, you could also buy some pizzas, garlic bread, more sausage rolls, hummus and crudites, nice bread and butter, cheese and chutneys with grapes etc. Fruit in general. Whatever it is, more, way more!!

Which apparently has three packs of butter in.

Justsewsew · 24/05/2026 18:08

God don't bake another cake as you're unwell. Get some cheese, grapes and biscuits. They're not coming to a restaurant so I think cake and strawberries would be plenty of pudding. Can I come too?

What’s more, he can prepare the buffet! And you can go on your phone on the toilet and leave him with the guests. Men love to chat don’t they.

75g of uncooked pasta....

That's 170g when cooked and that's if it's the main part of the meal. There's no way anyone would need 170g of pasta along with the other stuff the OP's serving.

PercyPigsAreOverRated · 24/05/2026 18:09

PistachioTiramisu · 24/05/2026 18:04

What and let them choose all the best bits? No way!

Well there's always been plenty of food and the children are taught not to take all of one thing. So there's enough for everyone.

Well that’s good as she’s only serving 800 g between 9 people.

They sound grim and I understand now why you're deliberately under-feeding them 😂

BeardySchnauzer · 24/05/2026 18:10

I don’t think the cake is a problem as you have meringue and strawberries to go as a second dessert (but maybe a few more strawberries or make an Eton mess?)

it’s just the main course that’s lacking

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 18:10

PercyPigsAreOverRated · 24/05/2026 18:09

There is indeed if they dint eat much,

Bjorkdidit · 24/05/2026 18:10

Sounds like a few of the 9 people won't touch the quiche. They're fairly small, but a third of a quiche, potatoes, salad, salmon and pesto plus crisps, cake and strawberries and cream is plenty unless you get selfish greedy people who wade in and take several portions of something before everyone has had a chance to choose.

If everyone takes a bit of what they want, then they share out the leftovers, it will be fine especially now the OP has said there will be more food.

But of course there will never be enough strawberries for MN DC who 'inhale' a punnet per child per day at least.

The pots from supermarkets that are meant as part of meal deals for one person are around 200g, but every buffet I’ve been people tend not to eat for most of the day before going and pick at different bits over time, and there seems to be a lot of different bits there that certain people won’t eat so they need something to make up for it.

I’m a ‘Boomer’ literally eating a curry right now 🙃

All the boomers I know would make a big curry to feed a crowd - it would be one of their first suggestions!

Op, I’m late to offer any suggestions as you’ve already got your shopping list for tomorrow ready, but I personally would buy enough sausage rolls so everyone present could have one if they chose rather than say “oh, that was intended for someone else as I didn’t think they’d eat the quiche” to anyone reaching for one.
