AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

I would chuck in some cold meats, bread and cheese at the very least.

Also I would add pizzas and sandwiches and probably buy half of M&S.. but im very much in the would rather have loads left over than run out camp.

We had a BBQ yesterday with 8 people and I definitely over did it but the potato salad ran out almost immediately. Luckily im crazy and had some back up in the fridge 😅 the left overs will feed us for the rest of the bank holiday!

StrictlyCoffee · 24/05/2026 17:54

Nowhere near enough for a dinner, no

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:54

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:50

How big should this new cake be?

I mean, I have a 9inch tin but apparently a three tier 9inch cake with frosting and fruit isn’t sufficient for 9 people. I’ll need to buy three more packets of butter because that’s how much went into this one.

If you bake you will know that a 9inch three tier sponge is big.

I’m actually starting to wonder if it’s the opiates or you’ve an eating disorder , or you’ve never fed 9 people before. As this is incredibly odd. You seem to think everything is massive and will feed 9 people and are relying on buying stuff people don’t like so they avoid it. And want to stretch it out.

its embarassing to invite people for dinner then be frugal on the food.

I’m going to disagree with most people here - I find that in buffet situations people tend to eat less than you think - the only thing I would agree with is to allow at least one sausage roll per person so maybe get another six. Just in case, you could have some bread and cheese in reserve as an extra course before strawberries and cake but you can probably use them for school/work lunches if you don’t use them.
Also agree with a PP that it depends a bit on the age of the children.

I agree. People tend to be mindful of allowing enough food for others/letting the kids go first etc and will probably take less than you think. They know they can go back for seconds if any leftover.
I think it's plenty. Maybe some French bread but otherwise it'll be enough. It'll be another hot day tomorrow so they probably won't want to eat much. Make sure you've got plenty of drinks! Oh and maybe bowls of crisps.

HedgehogsOnTheWall · 24/05/2026 17:54

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:40

I made it. It’s in a nine inch tin and has three layers. It’s about 6 inches high. But I’m sure somebody will come here and tell me that their family of 3 would finish it off.

You made a cake while on antibiotics and opiates?

anonymous0810 · 24/05/2026 17:54

This thread has tickled me. Are you maybe neuro-wonky as you put it? Everyone on here has said you are way off and despite your protestations that you are listening - you just aren’t.

People suggest getting lots of filler food like bread and cheese and you add a bag of jersey royals 🤦🏼‍♀️😆😆 You’ve added a tiny bit more to what you have and are arguing the toss about every little thing. Maybe just push the boat out and be extravagant for one meal - if it’s a cost issue then Aldi do great food in this genre.

TheyGrewUp · 24/05/2026 17:54

Taking your original list, I'd add:

Two cooked chickens, sliced
A large quantity of coleslaw
Extra new potatoes
Three french sticks
Selection of cheeses
I'd cut the sausage rolls in half and add 36 cocktail sausages
Another large punnet of strawberries
Some pickles and olives

Leftovers will do for lunch/tea/dinner/supper the following day.

If people have travelled, they will be hungry, if there is booze, you need stuff to soak it up. Salads need to fill two huge salad bowls.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:54

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:44

Me too.

I’m buying the extra food. I think I’ve said that about 8 times now.

Yes agree with this. It’s a bit odd

It’s not plenty give over. Yes people will self limit when they see not much there, and yes due to this they won’t eat much, as there isn’t much, but that doesn’t mean it’s plenty.

Judevalentine · 24/05/2026 17:55

Good god it’s like one of those lunches where someone is staying with their in-laws and has to smuggle in picnic food to sustain them.

sashh · 24/05/2026 17:55

tiramisugelato · 24/05/2026 17:16

Oh OP. No. You need at least 4 punnets of strawberries, ideally more.

No you don't, sorry but I hate them and I can't stand the smell.

OP
You need more sausage rolls and a different fruit, maybe raspberries.

I also agree you need bread and yes to cheese.

anonymous0810 · 24/05/2026 17:55

Also agree with the point that people will under eat because it looks awkward if they take a lot from a small offering, which will presumably make you think you were right. But I promise they will think it was tight.

Also to add my rule of thumb with things like sausage rolls is at LEAST 1 for every guest (as mentioned above im crazy and usually push that to 3!)

People will take less because they are mindful there's 9 people and clearly not enough food, but that doesn't mean they won't want more, or won't need to stop at mcdonalds on the way home, especially given they've travelled a reasonable distance

I bake, it’s my thing.

A nine inch cake, three layers or not, is not enough for 16 people!

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:57

Guys do any of you bake? The cake is not small.

AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Toystory36 · 24/05/2026 17:57

Hopefully people will bring food but you need more than that!!
adults always wolf into crisps and sausage rolls!! Maybe get some meats breads and cheese cocktail sausages and chicken goujons

.Its the very opposite of plenty!

PercyPigsAreOverRated · 24/05/2026 17:57

I assume none of the guests are veggie?

My DC would have come home starving at those ages. I don't think it's anywhere near enough.

ETA: isn't a 9" cake tin just a standard size?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:58

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:49

And yet you’re buying food many of them won’t eat.

Tell me what my family will eat then please?

Good job you’re not coming then, isn’t it?

My preference would be to do a lovely big curry for everyone but the boomer contingent won’t eat any of that ‘muck’.

Personally I would eat all the food you’re providing, nothing wrong with the actual food. It’s just better to have too much than not enough. I made a catering error one Boxing day 😩 and ended up having to order in pizzas (thank goodness they were open!). What a panic that was 😬

Fillybuster · 24/05/2026 17:58

Either the OP is winding us all up, channeling MN competitive under eating vibes or this is one of the most batshit threads I’ve seen all day (including the 2nd hand sex chair!)

OP, if you are being serious, those salmon flake packs are teeny tiny - they’re the sort of thing you throw into a salad for one person, not serve to 9. My 3 teen dcs would make short work of everything you’ve got listed, and still be hungry. Honestly, either feed people properly and generously. Or. Don’t. Invite. Them.

ps hope you feel better soon 💐

Christ 8ts even smaller than you said, it’s 5 inches tall 😂
