AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Ok, I’ll bake another cake too

No. Don’t bake another cake that is the same.
Buy a different dessert. A cheesecake, a trifle, some chocolate eclairs.

MsPavlichenko · 24/05/2026 17:49

Definitely at least another quiche, and sausage rolls. Maybe some chicken too. Cheese and biscuits would be an easy filler too.

It’s all stuff that can be eaten as leftovers, or some of it frozen. I’d much rather overcater than not have enough.

KoalaBlue1 · 24/05/2026 17:50

Could always buy a cooked chicken and chop that up

Aussie here, how hot is really hot? 😎

Mezzalola · 24/05/2026 17:50

Ok and don't forget 6 loaves of white bread and two tubs of butter

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · 24/05/2026 17:50

@geminicancerean that sounds better with the additional stuff. .today I brought DH and I a quiche and wondering if I needed too along with pork pies and other stuff !

RB68 · 24/05/2026 17:50

ALot depends - 9 adult men is a different story to 6 kids and 3 adults

I am not sure there is enough kids wise so maybe some mini pizzas or pizza bagette sliced up

I would go with the humous and veggies, bread and some cheese, crackers and grapes

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:46

It’s 800g total of pasta salad

OP, people eat 200-250g of pasta as single portion for lunch, so 800g is enough for 4 at most. Most people will want pasta at a buffet. That’s nowhere near enough you need a few big bowls of pasta.

You’re very defensive, even though you asked for advice? You say you’re not being defensive but then give sarcastic answers.

I agree with everyone, you have nothing here of substance and also nothing that ties your random selection together. Enjoy!

StrongPoison · 24/05/2026 17:50

We’ve got 12 in total tomorrow, 3 of which are kids. We are having:

2 veg and feta frittatas (8 eggs each)
Sausages, burgers and chicken wings
Rolls for the sausages and burgers
3 cheeses, crusty bread, nuts, fruit, honey
Tomato pesto pasta salad (using one bag of dried pasta)
Lentil and bean salad
Coleslaw and pot salad, 1 tub of each
Carrot sticks, sugar snap peas, 3 dips
Olives 1tub
Crisps 2 sharing bags
Cherry toms 2 punnets
Cake x 2, berries x 2 punnets, brownies

And I still have the itch that not enough so OPs seems very light.

Needs bread and cheese at the v least 🧀

Great that you’re baking another cake.
Will you be getting some more savoury things? I’d grab some baguettes, cheeses, cold meats, a few tubs picnic egg type things, some pate, more fresh fruit.

How big should this new cake be?

I mean, I have a 9inch tin but apparently a three tier 9inch cake with frosting and fruit isn’t sufficient for 9 people. I’ll need to buy three more packets of butter because that’s how much went into this one.

If you bake you will know that a 9inch three tier sponge is big.

Me too.

Of course she is. She wants opinions but then she is very defensive and is using foul language for maximum effect.

BunnyLake · 24/05/2026 17:51

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:14

Well it’s actually ‘tea’ because my family are working class and use that phrase and also have no issue helping themselves to bits.

But I forgot a pretty important addition!

I have two bags of miniature jersey royals and am going to make potato salad (with boiled eggs, mayo and spring onions) with one bag and boil the other bag and roll them in butter.

Forgot to mention the spuds!

You need more sausage rolls. I love sausage rolls and would be miffed if there were not enough for even one to go round.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 24/05/2026 17:51

I'd get more crisps, nuts, pasta salad, houmous and vegetables to dip. Add in bread and cheese/meat. Then more
strawberries and some ice cream.

Otherwise you run the risk of nothing left after half an hour.

Brasslightsforthewin · 24/05/2026 17:51

Op, I had 8 for dinner recently. I made a 10 inch, 3 layer Black Forest gateaux and a 10 inch key lime pie. It all got eaten, even after canapés, starter and main course, none of which did I stint on! We then had a cheese board!

AgnesX · 24/05/2026 17:51

Bread, butter, more salad, slaws, more crisps, add potato salad, preferably home made, another quiche. What drinks do you have?

Too much is preferable to not enough.

PS Dessert?

DaisyChain505 · 24/05/2026 17:52

You don’t need anymore potatoes.

Do a selection of dips with cucumber/pepper/carrot/celery sticks.

French baguette.

cocktail sausages, picnic eggs.

plenty of crisps.

cold pizzas cut up.

RB68 · 24/05/2026 17:52

Oh and my cheat for dessert is brownies - I get box mix and add in mixed chunks to make them more luxurious - also means its not a big faff baking - I made two boxes for half a doz people and they vanished and I didn't even eat one - they are also good with strawberries and cream

Yetone · 24/05/2026 17:52

dairydebris · 24/05/2026 17:12

Haha I love that everybody suggested more bread and cheese 🧀

Most people love nice bread and cheese.

Peterdottir · 24/05/2026 17:52

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:43

Ok, I’ll bake another cake too

But you're not well and you'll also be making your potato salad :-(

Instead of another cake how about adding a big bar of dairy milk to tomorrow's list and get your kids to do choc dipped strawberries? You can melt the choc in the microwave.

FWIW I don't think your original list was enough but that's mainly because you are doing a buffet rather than a plated meal the guests get served so you end up having to offer more than you usually would!

Hope you all have a lovely family day and you feel ok x

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 24/05/2026 17:52

Agreed not enough !
Yes to potato salad but need coleslaw too.
cocktail sauces , cheeses, baguette pickles and dips!

Taytocrisps · 24/05/2026 17:52

Anyone else getting hungry reading this? OP I'm glad you're buying more food. I hope you enjoy your day tomorrow with your guests and I hope you feel better soon.

redboxerclub · 24/05/2026 17:53

I think the potatoes were the thing that was missing. What about cucumber and tomatoes?

Probably already sorted it but I think a French stick some nice butter and a block of cheese and another quiche would sort it and accommodated picky eaters. A 9 in cha cake is a quite big. I make a cake with 4 eggs 8oz sugar butter and flour and get 16 servings from it.

you could add scones too to bulk out the main.

This is one of the most frustrating threads I’ve read on here. Just buy more bloody food.

I am going to buy more strawberries. Also potatoes. Chicken. Pork pies. Garlic bread. And apparently the means to bake yet another nine inch cake.
