AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

i think it’s a bit light, maybe some bread?

DollopOfFun · 24/05/2026 17:09

Oh honey, no.

HobGobblynne · 24/05/2026 17:09

I think it might be a bit tight for 9 tbh. Essentially it’s going to be a couple of slices of quiche and a salad for everyone. French bread and some cheese as well maybe!?

HedgehogsOnTheWall · 24/05/2026 17:09

I don't think it's anywhere near enough. If everyone wants a sausage roll you're in trouble!

FourEyesGood · 24/05/2026 17:09

You need about 50% more stuff, I reckon.

Hayley1256 · 24/05/2026 17:10

I'd add some sandwiches, cheese, crackers and I think you'll be fine

measuretwicecutonce · 24/05/2026 17:10

I don’t think the main bit is enough - 2 quiches and 2 packets salmon. What size are the quiches? I would have at least 4 quiches.

Also if you’ve not been well I hope your DH is stepping up rather than criticising?

Summerunlover · 24/05/2026 17:12

That’s nowhere enough. Bread and maybe some cheese. And a big pasta salad. And a lot more sausage rolls.

measuretwicecutonce · 24/05/2026 17:12

Don’t try and add new things just increase what you’ve got, it can always be frozen

dairydebris · 24/05/2026 17:12

If when you say ' big pot of pasta ' you mean one of their large pots of pesto pasta poured into a pot, and a big bag of green salad is one big bag of green salad I'd say not enough.

If you mean youve put 3/4 helpings of pasta salad into each big pot abd 3 salad bags makes your salad then you might have enough.

If budget allows I'd roast some chicken thighs and butter a few fresh baguettes, a few cold meats and cheeses too.

somanychristmaslights · 24/05/2026 17:12

Yep, way too tight! Get some nice crunchy bread and cheeses to pack it out.
also, doesn’t sound very kid friendly unless the kids will eat anything.

Brasslightsforthewin · 24/05/2026 17:12

Absolutely not. You say this is “dinner”? What you’ve listed isn’t that and is nowhere near enough. There needs to be actual food….Have you got a BBQ? Could you get DH to do some sausages and burgers?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:12

Ok, so maybe I need an extra quiche and maybe some continental meats? Hummus and veg?

Turnitoffnonagain · 24/05/2026 17:12

French bread cut into chunks, some cheese, crackers, maybe a couple of pizzas for the kids?

IwanttoWFH · 24/05/2026 17:12

Six sausage rolls with nine guests is madness :-) I’d definitely want a sausage roll.
Does everyone like salmon?
Theres not a lot of substance there (lots of salad). Personally, I’d add some chicken or pork pies or prawns etc.

titchy · 24/05/2026 17:12

Not enough variety or quantity sorry! Add a couple of baguettes/sour dough loaves, cheese, charcuterie, crudities and dips at least.

dairydebris · 24/05/2026 17:12

Haha I love that everybody suggested more bread and cheese 🧀

Wafalaman · 24/05/2026 17:13

I think you need some carbs... Crusty bread and cheese or a potato salad. Too go with the hummus, veg and continental meats

Pippa12 · 24/05/2026 17:13

Perhaps if you portion it out on plates rather than an actual buffet as people tend to load up their plates and over eat when left to their own devices. Plates it’s probably enough, not plated I think it will look sparce.

ColdAsAWitches · 24/05/2026 17:13

Not even close! At least one extra quiche, but you'd probably be better getting something different in case there's people that don't even like quiche.

titchy · 24/05/2026 17:13

Not an extra quiche no, too samey. Pizzas as someone else suggested.

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 17:14

Um no your husband is right, you’re not even close 6 sausage rolls between 9? 2 bags of crisps? I punnet of strawberries. You need a lot more.

Brasslightsforthewin · 24/05/2026 17:14

3 quiches between 9 people? No! Pp is right, add some pizzas.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:14

Well it’s actually ‘tea’ because my family are working class and use that phrase and also have no issue helping themselves to bits.

But I forgot a pretty important addition!

I have two bags of miniature jersey royals and am going to make potato salad (with boiled eggs, mayo and spring onions) with one bag and boil the other bag and roll them in butter.

Forgot to mention the spuds!
