AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

That’s not even a quarter of a quiche each and those quiches are small, for dinner portions.

Will the kids eat salad?

Baguettes, cheeses, bung a tray of sausages in the oven.

Bristolandlazy · 24/05/2026 17:34

I would buy some part baked rolls or a French stick too, plus the other things that were suggested. Have you got nice cheese? Nice drinks, lemonade, juice etc.

I hope you have a great day

Have checked the packaging and weight and have 950g of potatoes. Do I really need more than a kilo of spuds?

Per bag?

if not I don’t think it’s enough to split into two dishes tbh as it’s a spoonful of salad and a couple of buttered potatoes

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:15

Kids won’t eat the quiches and one adult family member doesn’t like quiche, but I do see your point

So your two quiches are to feed 8 adults, so each gets a quarter of a quiche? The kids presumably get 2 sausage rolls each? What does the non quiche eating adult get, salmon flakes?

Sorry to sound snippy but I really don't think it's much food. You seem to but I would heed the advice about getting chicken drumsticks, and baguettes, garlic bread, that sort of thing. You've said your family are working class, and so are mine, but it's a very posh tea if it's meant to be tea. My dad would have asked where the meat was, and if there were any sandwiches.

LivingwithHopenowandforever · 24/05/2026 17:35

I agree with the others you need more food, I would roast a chicken, more filling salads, defo more strawberries and add more picky bits!

Goodmorningeveryone26 · 24/05/2026 17:35

How on Earth can anyone answer this question without knowing how big the quiches abd pits etc are?

CherryViper · 24/05/2026 17:35

Two quiche is loads.

I would rather have a protein.

French bread or crusty rolls always go down well.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 24/05/2026 17:27

Those strawberries are probably enough for 4 or 5 people. Not 9.

I know for a fact that at least 3 of the guests will not eat them. But I am going to get more.

There is absolutely nothing there I would eat, except maybe the salad. I’d expect this for an evening type thing, but for a dinner? Nope, not enough.

Mezzalola · 24/05/2026 17:36

You need some sandwiches, cheap filling, but loads, so cheese? And ham And a big load of chips 😁

Then get something they will eat. Why do you keep biying stuff many won’t eat?

Good job you’re not coming then, isn’t it?

My preference would be to do a lovely big curry for everyone but the boomer contingent won’t eat any of that ‘muck’.

I wouldn’t add boiled eggs with soft yolks! That’ll likely mean no one will touch it.

Why? I think it sounds lovely!

Tel12 · 24/05/2026 17:37

Get nine jacket potatoes, douse with olive oil and salt. Always a no effort addition.

I have, they will definitely partake of the enormous cake.

A kilo of potatoes? For 9 people? 😂
You don't cook much do you OP?

That's 100g per person. It's not loads.

Vartden · 24/05/2026 17:38

Not nearly enough. The number you mention is the same as my children and grandchildren. We would have 6 quiches plus trays of sausages and loads of different salads and cheeses/ ham/ plates and bread .Tubs of ice cream and fruit.

Growlybear83 · 24/05/2026 17:38

Sorry but that’s a snack not a spread. You need at least twice the amount you’ve got.

Monty36 · 24/05/2026 17:38

Even a bowl of hot onion rings to go with sausages in rolls will be popular. They don’t take ages to cook.

BeardySchnauzer · 24/05/2026 17:38

My boomer parents love a curry 🙄. But not in this weather

How big is this cake, given you think 650g of strawberries is enough to feed 9 people?

craftycowbag · 24/05/2026 17:38

You need more. I’d add in crisps and dips with veg sticks and hummus. I’d get crusty bread. I really don’t like quiche but if it’s those small ones, I suspect any adult would and could easily eat half themselves. I’d add in some pizza.

Yes 100g of new potatoes is like 2 new potatoes, it's about 70kcal. Combined with 1/5 of a quiche and a flake of salmon is basically what your guests have each. It's very little food!

Get a couple of pizzas and a French stick. Double the potatoes (at least), 2 more punnets of strawberries and buy another 6 pack of sausage rolls.
