AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

Even allowing for the potato salad, you need more food. I agree with the chicken suggestion. Or maybe a large lasagne (a pre-cooked bung it in the oven job - I appreciate you've not been feeling well. Although you said it's going to be hot, so maybe you don't want the oven on. Also, I don't think you've many options for the kids. Most kids I know would turn their noses up at quiche and salmon and salads. They'd prefer pizza or cocktail sausages or something like that. You said there are three kids coming, but how old are they? Big difference in the appetite of a three year old vs. a 16 year old.

The eldest will eat next to nothing (my DC, has ARFID, autism and a tonne of other shit going on)

then there’s 7 and 5yos, they prob won’t be into salads but will deffo go for most of the other stuff.

Ok, going to send husband to Tesco for additional strawberries, garlic flatbreads and more spuds. Also more mayo because while posting this I remember I’ve run out - and I usually make my own mayo but I honestly cannot be faffed while I’m on antibiotics and opiates.

is it the opiates? Maybe have your husband read the thread and he can then decide what to buy in Tesco. As it’s clear you’re not listening to anything said/

That still won't be enough. At least add some nice bread. That will help fill them up cheaply.

FernFaery · 24/05/2026 17:28

You need nice bread and cheese at the very least, probably some pizza as well.

Cakeandcardio · 24/05/2026 17:29

A few or more Lidl sourdough pizzas too I think

DeathMetalMum · 24/05/2026 17:29

I'd also be careful with sausage rolls. I know people can be quite fussy with sausages, my dd1 in particular. So are a couple of my work colleagues. Dd1 only likes ones from a certain supermarket for example.

bigsoftcocks · 24/05/2026 17:29

Get some fresh baguettes tomorrow too.

Betano · 24/05/2026 17:29

I’d double what you have, add a couple of pizzas, some bread and cheese and probably 3 desserts including strawberries and cream.

mondaytosunday · 24/05/2026 17:30

What are ‘pots’ of pasta salad? It doesn’t sound like enough. I’d get another two quiches, another 12 sausage rolls, at least two more pasta salads… basically double everything!

TotalBaloney · 24/05/2026 17:30

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:24

Do your children regularly eat 300g of strawberries each then? I bet they’re regular!

2 of mine would easily eat that pack in one sitting if I didn’t keep an eye on them!
Why wouldn’t you at least provide a sausage roll per person though?!

BeardySchnauzer · 24/05/2026 17:30

Can’t you just tell your DH to buy what he thinks would be enough?

italianmountains · 24/05/2026 17:30

I would at least double the quantity of food.

YoBetty · 24/05/2026 17:31

If it were me, I'd add a dozen chicken drumsticks, two packs of 6x mini pork pies, some vegetable samosas and a whole pineapple cut into half-moon rings.

VintageLane · 24/05/2026 17:31

It’s a bit parsimonious.

I wouldn’t even be including crisps in your calculation, they’re just for picking on. And those M&S pasta pots are very small.

Even including your potato salad, it’s really not enough.

mamaduckbone · 24/05/2026 17:31

No where near, sorry

JustFrustrated · 24/05/2026 17:31

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:15

Kids won’t eat the quiches and one adult family member doesn’t like quiche, but I do see your point

This is awful catering then. One adult has some hot smoked salmon, half a sausage roll and some … bits?

no.

add bread, cheese, cooked meats, veg (you can even buy it pre cut) dips and hummus, pizza. Another 12 sausage rolls.

it’s like you’re aiming for “posh” but forgetting who the guests are?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:32

Have checked the packaging and weight and have 950g of potatoes. Do I really need more than a kilo of spuds?

OP posts:
CherryViper · 24/05/2026 17:32

I think it's plenty.

I wouldn't eat quiche or sausage rolls, there are plenty of alternatives.

I agree with a lot more strawberries.

Monty36 · 24/05/2026 17:32

It might sound a bit strange but I would put a bowl of sweetcorn out too. Alongside the mayo. Some sliced boiled egg. And some tomatoes.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 24/05/2026 17:33

If you've been unwell, and it's family, can you just ask them to bring a plate of something/nibbles, etc with them. You will then be able to feed the 5,000.

BeardySchnauzer · 24/05/2026 17:33

Unless this is your family and the under eating is a family trait - you don’t want people politely not taking things/taking a small portion because there isn’t much. You’ll end up with leftovers and hungry guests!

flapjackfairy · 24/05/2026 17:33

I always do way too much and the next day I dont have to do any food prep. We just use up leftovers which is a welcome relief after feeding a large group the day before. What about jacket spuds ?

Nottopanic · 24/05/2026 17:33

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:18

I add boiled eggs with soft yolks. I can stretch it I think. My potato salad is fucking delicious.

I wouldn’t add boiled eggs with soft yolks! That’ll likely mean no one will touch it.

A standard side portion of potatoes is about 180 g per person.
