I just had a shower as it’s boiling. My friend said I can’t believe you shower a few times a day? Lol she said even when it’s hot I bath once a week 🫢🤣

Strip washes are pretty good, if you know how to do them properly (which it seems a lot of showerers don't). The stunning arrogance of those who believe that just because showers weren't a regular part of bathrooms 50-odd years ago, everyone smelled, is shocking.

If you have a tepid shower in which you don't wash your hair, it's unlikely your scalp smells. But if you have a hot shower, somehow managing to keep your hair dry, your scalp still gets damp in the steam. That means excess sebum, trapped sweat, maybe hair products baked in...all leading to a stale-smelling scalp.

So while the ardent showerers are busy pouring scorn on those who clean themselves in a different way, they might like to ponder on that.

I wrap mine before a shower, then put a shower cap on
I mean if my scalp did smell a bit for whatever reason, I can’t wash it more often as my hair would be damaged
it copes with twice a week best

Twice a day usually.

Anyone who doesn’t wash at least once per day, can’t you smell yourself or are you just nose blind? The smell of unwashed bodies is quite noticeable and unpleasant.

I agree a daily wash is essential.

I shower everyday sometimes twice aday depends on what im doing.
Morning and night.

I was fed up as a child having to bath once aweek in the same dirty warter after my mother.
Having a sprip wash in the holidays as baths was once aweek in tearm times only, i was rank and i smelled.

I’m going to stick my head up over the parapet here and say I shower roughly every other day and wash my hair once or twice a week. My hair is very thick and curly, so it doesn’t need washing every day. I live with a partner who would certainly tell me if I stink, so I know I don’t. I just don’t see the need to shower if I’ve done nothing 🤷🏻‍♀️ obviously I will shower more if I’ve done exercise/swimming etc etc, but if I’ve just been to work and come home or been at home all day I don’t necessarily feel the need. To make things even worse i’ll add that if I’m not leaving the house I just stay in my pyjamas all day 🤣

I don't get why people think they don't need to wash their scalps because they have curly hair.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · Yesterday 12:01

I had to share my sister’s bath water, @SaltShark - I hated it. Initially it was because I stayed up later but in our teens, when we had the same bedtime, it didn’t change.

We had baths on Sunday and Wednesday so I asked mum if my sister and I could take turns to go first and get the clean, hot water - and she said No!. Partly, I think, because she favoured my sister and partly because she and dad shared bath water and she always went first so she didn’t want to admit this wasn’t fair to him!

LathkillDale · Yesterday 12:13

I’ve read several articles about showers for people over 65. They said a daily shower strips too much oil from older people’s skin, which is drier and thinner. The ideal is say a shower Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a strip wash on the days between. My hair is so dry, I only need to wash it twice a week maximum, otherwise it looks like straw despite conditioner, etc.

If climate change continues, then water is going to become scarcer in the UK, and the price will go up. I imagine an electric pump shower uses more water in five minutes than a strip wash?

I don't get why people think they don't need to wash their scalps because they have curly hair.

Curly hair is more fragile, it often doesn’t get greasy (mine never gets greasy at all no matter how long I leave it)
it also can take a long time to dry and style. Afro hair in particular is incredibly fragile and too much washing can cause hygral fatigue or brittle hair and you generally wash because of scalp tightness, to restyle or because the scalp is itchy. The shape means that oils are slower to travel down the hair shaft too so if you wash too often you strip the hair

you’ve also got how long it takes to dry which can lead to over moisturised hair. Mine takes maybe 45 minutes diffusing to dry and I don’t have that time daily or every 2 days - it would wreck my hair as it’s so fragile

BadLad · Yesterday 12:34

I shower every morning when I’m on my own. Every morning and evening when I’m with my wife as she and her country people think going to bed without showering is disgusting.

Australians call us Brits soap dodgers. I thought they were talking bollocks until I read Mumsnet showering threads.

Thanks for the lesson. I've got curly hair. My point is your scalp still needs washing whether your hair is greasy or not.

A daily shower in any weather is normal. More in hot weather. I used to live in a hot climate and would shower 3 times a day or more depending on activity.

TotalBaloney · Yesterday 13:55

Wishingplenty · Yesterday 07:59

It is very over indulgent and unnecessary to shower/bath everyday. There literally is not enough hours in the day for this.

I have 3 kids, one is disabled and requires far more care than the average child, and a full time job. I still manage a 5 min shower every day. I don’t watch TV though; maybe if I did I wouldn’t have time to shower. I reckon I could still fit it in even if I did watch TV though.

I shower because it’s far quicker and easier than a ‘good’ strip wash. I don’t really get why people would make more work for themselves unless down to necessity (no shower, physical disabilities etc), but each to their own.

How can someone wash their scalp without washing their hair, @Chocolattcoffeecup?

You can’t. But the point is that even if your hair doesn’t need washing, your scalp does. So you may have to wash your hair when it doesn’t necessarily need it, in order to keep your scalp clean and non smelly.

I do wash my scalp when it needs it which is twice a week. Really not seeing an issue with every 3-4 days
some people go 7-14 depending on hair and whether it’s in a protective style or not
I tried every other day and my hair was breaking

I shower twice a day anyway. More in hot weather. Wash my hair daily, I couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks.

Partly depends how much you sweat I guess. I exercise daily so my scalp would be honking after 4 days. I also swim regularly so have to wash the chlorine out. Can’t even imagine what it would be like after 2 weeks 😁

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that. Several reasons have been given for people preferring to strip wash, but I can see if they don't apply to you personally you might find it difficult to understand.

I guess they’d fall under the ‘etc’ in my previous post. In general, it is easier to get clean quickly in a shower. Of course exceptions apply, as I alluded in my post that you quoted.

I’d rather not ponder that
I am chilled about perhaps failing the skill of a strip wash. Love my shower and bath too much and scrubbing your nethers snd under your pits with a damp cloth all seems a bit 1940s blitz-esque to me!

Mumofyellows · Yesterday 15:40

Morning and evening for me when it’s hot, I love a cool shower just before bed when it’s warm to cool right off before sleep.

Yeah, of all the skills I’ve aspired to mastering in my life, being ‘good at a strip wash’ isn’t really one of them!

Darkladyofthesonnets · Yesterday 15:56

Strip washing is awful. I remember doing it when I was young and poor. Trying to get the soap off was particularly trying because who want slightly sudsy armpits.

Fleurdalys · Yesterday 16:32

This thread is ridiculous….
just take a 5 minute shower and stop fannying about washing your fanny arse and pits with a bloody cloth ffs.
Its 2026
( said as I’ve just stood behind someone in my local supermarket who was dressed up to the nines with full makeup and coiffed hair)
She absolutely stunk of BO and filthy fanny
