I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

Its great life, I love it and wouldn't change a it

And yet British women are more depressed than ever, so it seems like the traveller community is actually better for women.

You need to stop making excuses! Harsh words I know but come on. Nothing is stopping you now.

I had a very tough childhood. I knew the only way out was education so I bloody worked at it, while holding down a part time evening job and taking care of my younger sibling cause my mother was passed out drunk on the sofa!

the past is the past the future is what you make of it

Nah Im 42 now its too late. I also wouldnt be able to afford to go back to full time education.

It's normal within the traveller community.
It's also none of your business.

It's everyone's business if kids are taken out of school, and deliberately kept from education and the chance of a different life, if they want it.

SnipItScrapBook · 17/05/2026 19:54

I think 16 is too young for marriage, I agree with the UK law.

Nonimity · 17/05/2026 19:55

BridgetJonesV2 · 17/05/2026 13:11

Sadly very normal in the traveller community. Women aren't valued, not allowed to be educated past age 11, and taught to be slaves to men cooking and cleaning, and other things that would get me banned from talking about. It's horrific.

Not true. Horrible comment.

I'm no Tyson Fury fan but you don't get to be heavyweight champion of the world if you're not a good boxer.

Depends on your generation, I think, for boxers and the rest of us.

He's an enormously tall slugger who has poor competition most of the time. It's the way it is, but it will never be Ali/Foreman or even Ali/Liston or any other permutation of that crew.

By that logic, all conservative comunities which marry off their girls by 16 are good for women.
Because they have a low rate of divorce.

Mixerfixer · 17/05/2026 19:56

Most people aren't really mature enough to get married at 18 either.

So taking away choices and raising girls to be wives and mothers only and not to make their own way in life is a positive thing?

Each to their own but I am glad I have the choice not to marry/have children and can be independent

Which of course is largely due to women ‘knowing their place’

Married well under 16 years? What does this mean?

  1. I don't recommend it, but it's also why I'm not good with leaving mine to the influence of poor schools and tv or tiktok.

Child marriage is everyone's business.
You can't excuse harmful practices by calling them cultural, whatever the culture.

Undercookedby10 · 17/05/2026 20:05

InstantlyBella · 17/05/2026 13:21

Not everybody around the world lives their lives according to your own personal beliefs. Some cultures practice arranged marriages and if it works for these cultures, who are we to judge? Stop looking at things through a western colonial lense.

Ah all good then. The cultures that rape, abuse and murder young girls and women who aren't being subservient by not adhering to their cultural norms.

FFS wake up.

You know there is a vast space between being let loose on TikTok and being brought up in your culture? It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

People do need to abide by the laws of the country they live in, especially when everyone else has accepted them without revolt. This is not Nazi Germany where opposition to imposed rules was valid, as an outrage to civilisation and humanity.

I wouldn't go to Saudi and crack open the gin publically.

Ponderingwindow · 17/05/2026 20:07

This is sadly legal where I live as well. They need the sign off of the parents and a judge.

lawmakers here are actively working on changing the law to ban child marriage. I hope they succeed. There is absolutely no reason anyone under 18 needs to get married.

No one who isn’t financially and legally independent, and free of potential coercion, should be getting married.

I think we all know that their "move" to IOM is just for tax avoidance reasons and that in reality, Fury and his family will spend a lot of time back in the UK. He can afford to buy a few houses on the IOM to pretend he lives there. I can't imagine anyone genuinely believes the entire Fury family will put down proper roots and live in the IOM!!

Don’t want to start an argument and saying that is not why they moved there but they have been living on the Isle of Man for over six months and the younger children have all been in school on the Isle of Man for all of that time. They are also regularly seen at local eateries and places and engage in local events and seem to have integrated into the community. It isn’t just a base or a holiday home - they live their lives there.

ExOptimist · 17/05/2026 20:09

Dear god, it's absolutely shocking the number of women on here defending girls not being educated or having ambition to have a great career.
It's almost like being back in the 18th century or living somewhere like Afghanistan.

QuintadosMalvados · 17/05/2026 20:09

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 17/05/2026 19:13

At 16, people wouldn’t know if the person was a good person. You know fuck all about most things at that age.

Lol. Most people don't know at 40.

Do you also think the private and state school system is shocking then?

That every child doesnt have the same access to a fair education?

Because I think that is shocking.

Genuinely. Girls don't need a secondary education and it's better to marry them off as children so they're less able to get divorced 🙄

Smartiepants79 · 17/05/2026 13:10

I think a better question is why???

No sex before marriage?

Ponderingwindow · 17/05/2026 20:14

It's everyone's business if kids are taken out of school, and deliberately kept from education and the chance of a different life, if they want it.

Everyone has the right to choose their path. Without an education, children are trapped.

I refuse to call it “culture” when I see girls being given less education and having fewer choices than boys. That is discrimination regardless of where it happens.

Just to be clear, I know not all Traveller families decline to educate their children or marry them off young. I would never paint that broad a brush.

I am simply speaking about the concept that we must excuse discrimination in the name of culture.

A quick Google suggests 500 but he regrets it, so that's ok. I can't imagine he'd be quite so forgiving if it was his wife sleeping around.

Or his daughter.
